The skills that digital students need to master for life are changing. They need to learn to read critically and to speak and write persuasively. Understanding math facts is not sufficient; students need to apply mathematical and scientific principles to solve real-world problems. They need to be able to weigh current events through the lens of the worlds great cultures. Although the need for these skills is not new, they are increasingly important for students who must cope with the fast-changing and complex world of the 21st century.
Searching the web, finding copious results, designing databases, concept maps and spreadsheets, to sift and sort that information into categories, recognising frequency, trends and patterns and then creatively communicating findings to others, mimics the mental work of experts.
The worlds largest library
Many people assumed that the rich graphic content of the web would diminish the amount of reading required. In fact, the web has more content and more complex content, requiring sophisticated reading skills. And, considering that the web allows anyone to be a publisher, the web requires the critical thinking skills necessary to determine the quality and accuracy of content.
Students need to use technology to understand the meaning embedded in charts, graphs, audio, video and animation. They must experience new approaches to learning that are inquiry based, collaborative and perhaps virtual. They need to be engaged in the learning process, using the tools of their generation.
Technology used in this process, produces long-term, transferable learning and leads to increased student achievement and the development of real world skills necessary to be successful. It helps lead to true life-long learning skills. As John Dewey said, The object and reward of learning is continued capacity for growth.
