Sharing ideas and concepts
Profiles in Success: Kids Congress
|
In November 2006, the Catholic Schools Office of the Diocese of Broken Bay hosted the inaugural Kids Congress for Year 5 students across 36 primary schools. A learning event "designed for kids and organised by kids", Broken Bay's Kids Congress gave students the opportunity to work together to consider, debate and present real world issues within a 21st century learning environment.
While the program culminated in a two-day gathering of over 120 students, the prelude to that gathering was the communicating and sharing of ideas and concepts. Senior Education Officer, Paul Meldrum explains: The focus was on providing students with the technology they could use to work together – regardless of distance – to communicate their concerns on real world issues.”
"Every class was tasked with creating a podcast that would present their ideas and findings. Even to the casual observer, it's plainly obvious that the level of understanding those students gained is outstanding; and it's due largely to the fact that in creating a podcast, they were using tools and a medium totally relevant to kids today."
