Kids Congress

Using e-mail and Web-based forums, students shared their concerns and thoughts on issues ranging from childhood obesity and global warming through to the detention of refugees and even cyber-bullying. With each Year 5 class focusing on one particular issue, the research and sharing of ideas (delivered in a podcast) resulted in clear testament to the dedication shown by students to understand fully the issue at hand.

The core tool used by the Year 5 students to create their podcasts is Garageband, which comes as part of the Apple iLife ‘06 suite. Garageband is a Mac-based recording studio that gives users the ability to create, edit and record audio tracks and sound effects, then add graphics or video.

"It’s actually that single tool capability for all three types of podcasts that makes GarageBand and the Mac so valuable in podcasting. While other platforms may have tools for creating straight audio or movie podcasts, the Mac platform is the only one to offer audio, picture or video podcasts in a single environment."
