The essence of podcasting
Profiles in Success: Kids Congress

Kids Congress

With each completed podcast made available for viewing and subscription via the Kids Congress 2006 Web site, students were fully aware that their work was on view for the world to see.

Podcasting

It's that awareness and acceptance of a wide audience that actually underpins one of the objectives of the Kids Congress – striving to provide children with the skills and confidence required to effect real change in the world. "We want them to be leaders in society," Meldrum says, "rather than just riders in society. Using the relevant medium of podcasting shows them that they can effect change and be leaders."

Parents also have responded positively to the introduction of podcasting within the schools. "We've had a number of parents who have come to us and said that their children were applying themselves to the research and development of the podcasts at levels many of them had simply never seen before," Meldrum comments.

"That, probably more than anything, clearly demonstrates the absolute value and benefit of podcasting in the learning environment."

"Children today are generally very comfortable in a world where the Internet delivers a global audience for their work. With podcasting, gone are the days when work done in the classroom stayed within that confine."

— Paul Meldrum, Senior Education Officer
