Frequently Asked Questions (applicable only for the Canberra, Queensland and WA events)

What products can I recycle?

Any old computers, laptops, monitors or computer related peripherals of any brand.

What products are not accepted through Apple’s Recycle program?

We do not accept copiers, overhead projectors, batteries not integral to computer systems, cracked or broken CRT monitors, UPS units, contaminated equipment of any kind, or any other universal or hazardous waste prohibited by local, state or federal government.

What happens to my computer when it is recycled?

All electronic waste is processed by an Apple approved and authorised recycler in Australia. It is processed according to local, state and federal laws and in an environmentally controlled way to eliminate waste being needlessly dumped into landfill.

Each item is mechanically shredded or dismantled manually. Liberated materials are sorted into various product streams: metals, plastics, glass, cables and packaging. Commodities are weighed and then further processed.

Products are not refurbished, onsold as whole units or donated.

Is there a limit to how many items I can drop off?

A maximum of 20 computer systems will be allowed per car load, educational institutions excepted.

What should I do to secure the data on our systems?

Apple recommends that you archive all wanted data off your machine before you submit it for recycling. The hard drive will be physically destroyed so any data that remained on the drive will be lost.

Apple has no responsibility for loss or confidentiality of customer data on recycled equipment. Before providing equipment for recycling, the customer or institution should (a) back up or transfer any data prior to deletion; (b) delete data on the hard-disk drives and any other storage devices in the products; and (c) remove any removable media, such as diskettes, CDs or PC Cards.

How should I dispose of batteries in my portable computer?

Your battery can remain inside the unit. If you have an extra battery, please tape over the contacts with electrical tape.

What about printer cartridges?

We will have collection bins for old printer cartridges at each of the recycling locations.

Is there a cash trade in being offered on my old machine?

No
