The trick is to choose the correct ear tip to get a good seal in the ear. If the seal is poor, the bass will be reduced. With a good seal the sound and noise isolation is quite good.

Strong bass is achieved with right earbuds

You cannot possibly purchase better-s I own a $1500 custom monitors from Ultimate Ears. Please read my review of Apple In-Ear Headphones in this perspective. You cannot possibly purchase better-sounding headphones at this price, period. Many reviews here have complained about a perceived lack of bass. These headphones come with middle-size earbuds installed. Upon purchase, I immediately tried these headphones on a treadmill and strong disappointed with lack of bass and insufficient noise isolation. At that time, the middle-size earbuds felt right to my ears. The next day, I decided to give the large-size earbuds. In a quiet listening, I listened to the same tunes that I had listened to on the treadmill. I could not believe a dramatic improvement in smooth and strong bass tones and overall tonal clarity, blessed with superb noise isolation. As some reviewers here have also pointed out, it is absolutely imperative to experiment with the three different sizes of earbuds that come with these Apple headphones. One tip is that, if you are comfortable with it, you may want to moisten the earbuds with your lips. This practice would increase noise isolation further. True, as good as these Apple headphones sound, they are no match for custom monitors with ear molds made only for your ear canals. But, it is absolutely true that you would never find a better price-performance with headphones for iDevices than these Apple headphones. Give them a try and be patient with earbuds. You'd be rewarded with the feeling that you had never spent $79 on anything better than these headphones.

For me, these are almost perfect; when I run, eat of sleep, the seal holds pretty good. The headphones alone compete with others, which can cost up to 150$, but with the right eartips, if these do not fit you, you should get the best sound out of these. I bought some foam eartips that improved the quality drastically. I recommend buying them.

Just an awful product, bad sound quality and broken after <6 months.

Massively overpriced, £65 for a pair that sound worse than a £20 set of Sennheisers. Expect them to break in a short space of time! very poor build and cheap components. The left ear buzzed out after just 6 months of normal use, tried all the usual tricks to get it back but nope - damaged diaphragm. Don't for one second believe these 5* reviews, it seriously must be an Indian "like/review" centre churning them out because I have no clue how someone could be so happy with these to give them a perfect score!

      Great...with different tips

Luckily, I found that others were having the same problem and heard about the Whoomp! foam tips from Comply. They're made specifically for these headphones. Problem solved! If you don't know what size you need, they offer a mix pack with S, M & L. After that you can order a 3-pack of your size only. Seriously, they made all the difference in the world.

I'm usually very careful on choosing anything I'm buying, but the fact the EarPods were doing really good to my ears didn't make me think too much about getting the in-ears. Mind-blowing mistake. Why did I pick these instead of the budget Beats, it's haunting me. Worst of all? I bought from a retailer who will not accept any returns on Apple products. A serious retailer. So had I run with the same luck buying the Beats, at least I could take them back to the store. Everything is awful on these. Flat, no bass terrible cheap sound quality. The tips won't stay in place. Do not buy at all. I won't trust Apple anymore.
