How do I connect the Apple TV to my TV and A/V Receiver?

What cables are needed and what inputs are used on my TV and A/V Receiver?

It depends whether your A/V receiver can can switch HDMI, and whether it can handle audio over HDMI.

If your A/V receiver can switch HDMI, and handle audio over HDMI:
Connect the HDMI out from the Apple TV to the HDMI in on your A/V receiver.
Connect the HDMI out from the A/V receiver to the HDMI in on your HDTV

If your A/V receiver can switch HDMI, but can't handle audio over HDMI:
Connect the HDMI out from the Apple TV to the HDMI in on your A/V receiver.
Connect the HDMI out from the A/V receiver to the HDMI in on your HDTV
Connect the optical out from the Apple TV to an optical in on your A/V receiver.

If your A/V receiver doesn't handle HDMI at all:
Connect the HDMI out from the Apple TV to the HDMI in on your HDTV
Connect the optical out from the Apple TV to an optical in on your A/V receiver.

If you don't have enough inputs on your A/V receiver or HDTV, you may need an HDMI or optical switch box (or a new A/V amp!)

  • Connect a HDMI cable from Apple TV to a HDMI input on your A/V Receiver.
Then use HDMI out on the A/V Receiver to connect to your HDTV via another HDMI cable.
