More of an $$$ gadget than useful

    • Written by from Escondido

I bought 2 of these units for our iMacs. The initial install was OK and the unit worked. The specs said that it works up to 6 days without a recharge, so I decided to push it and see how long it goes. After 4 days, the Mac battery level was reading 9%, so I decided to charge it. The first overnight charge was OK, back to 100% and the light on the charger was solid green. The 2nd (and subsequent) charges worked, but the green flashing light did not go solid.

My test was to turn off the mouse and let it charge. It worked and the green light went solid after a night charge. When the mouse is left on (on/off switch), then the charger thinks it's not fully charged and keeps flashing.

    A few things to remember:
    - The unit comes with a USB cable for charging, but no charger. They assume that you will use your Mac or laptop to charge it. If your Mac goes to sleep, the port goes dead and you can not charge the unit. You need an external power supply such as iPhone charger.
    - Rechargeable batteries are 1.25 volts rather than 1.5 volts of a AA battery, so your battery gauge on the Mac is inaccurate.
    - Since the unit uses electronics for charging, your battery is even smaller and has less of a lifetime than 2 AA rechargeables. I recommend charging every other night to be safe.

Their tech support says that it's working the way it should, and if I turn off the mouse while charging, or take the battery back out and leave it on the charger by itself (their suggestion) the light goes to solid green but if I leave the mouse on, the light keeps flashing. I personally don't know anyone who turns off their mouse or takes the batteries out every night.

Works great when it works. When it doesn't, contact Mobee.

    • Written by from Arcadia

I had my Mobee Charger since it was released (about 6-7 weeks). Initially, it worked great. It would charge without issues and my Magic Mouse stayed connected. At about 4 weeks, I started having issues with the mouse disconnecting. This problem became more frequent until then it would not even charge correctly. I contacted Mobee and they agreed that I had a defective product. They promptly replaced it (kudos to them), and so far it has worked well for the past week or so. Let's hope I just got unlucky and that this replacement will continue to work well.

Great product, but do not put on iMac stand

    • Written by from Milltimber

Really easy and always a powered mouse.

BUT, do not put the charge unit on the aluminium stand of a iMac. The induction based charge principle is negatively influenced by the metal of the stand, making it show 'waiting' stae in stead of charging.

Puttingit slightly outside the stand ensures no troubles!.

    Cheers and have fun

Ignore the Mac OS battery status

    • Written by from WELSHPOOL

I just pop my Magic Mouse on it overnight once a week and never have to worry about replacing the batteries. It works just as you'd expect, except the Battery Level reading in the Mac OS bluetooth menu only refreshes when you take the battery pack out of the mouse and re-insert it. Which means it can be showing 100% for days, then all of a sudden it drops to 6% and then stops a minute later. Apart from that little annoyance it's a convenient way to charge up your battery-sapping Magic Mouse.

Setting the record straight for those that has had bad experiences

    • Written by from CALGARY

    Some past reviews complained of:
    1. Charger not working properly
    2. Battery remaining indicator doesn't report properly in OSX
    3. Battery fit and finish is awful and inconsistent
    4. Charger base dies an early life
    5. Battery falls out
    6. Mouse bluetooth connectivity randomly fails

Of these 6 major complains I can say this:
    1. Charger MUST not be placed on the aluminum base of the iMac or a metallic surface. The system works by using inductive charging. Metallic surfaces will completely render the charger useless. Place it on a wood desk and it will charge the battery fine.
    2. Normal alkaline/lithium AA batteries operate at 1.5 volts/battery. NiMH and Ni-Cad rechargeables are designed to work at 1.2 volts / battery. This 0.3 volts difference in the cells explains why the battery % indicator in OSX doesn't report 100% charge b/c of this voltage difference. Apple SHOULD allow users of OSX to select the type of battery that is installed in their input devices so that the battery % indicator is more representative of what is the actual life instead of basing on the assumption that battery cell voltage is always 1.5 volts / battery when in a 100% state.
    3. Battery fit and finish in fact is excellent on the unit I purchased. The key is to pay close attention to the install. Place the upper portion of the battery into the mouse first and tip the battery into the mouse and engage the locking tab. Press firmly down on the battery further until you can manually move the locking tab into the fully engaged position. Once locked the slight outward pressure of the battery pack will keep it locked in place. I've banged my mouse around deliberately on my desk to make the battery pack disengage and fall out. So far so good.
    4. Can't comment on the charger's life expectancy but it does carry a 1 year warranty through Mobee Technologies and if you purchase it on a credit card then your warranty is doubled to 2 years anyways.
    5. Please refer to point 3 and FULLY engage the lock tab on the bottom of the mouse. Don't just press fit it in, press firmly and LOCK the tab in place so it fully catches the edge of the lock tab cutout.
    6. Can't say that in the few days I've used the mouse that I've lost connectivity. Some reports have said that the connectivity loss is a direct result of the battery falling out. If point 3 is followed then there should be no reason why the mouse would stop communicating with your computer.

Overall after paying very close attention to the fine details of the charger and battery pack I give it a 4 star rating. Pay particular attention as to how the battery should be installed (tuck upper portion of the battery into mouse FIRST and then firmly lock the tab on the bottom. Last but not least don't place the charger on ANY metal surfaces (esp the foot of the iMac base).

    Recommendations to improve this product:
    1. Include detailed install instructions so that others can't inadvertently try to drop the battery pack into the mouse without first tucking in the upper edge. Common sense isn't so common for some users.
    2. Not related to product - Apple OSX needs to revise their battery reporting schema to allow users to tell OSX what type of batteries their using.
    3. Price - This unit isn't cheap. Consider that you can buy the equivalent eneloop batteries for HALF the cost to accomplish the same result is a tough sell for some.
    4. HAVE a CLEARLY VISIBLE warning to product users to NOT place the charger on metallic surfaces. It simply doesn't work when sitting on metal or the base of the iMac.
    5. Include a passthrough USB cable so that it can still be plugged into a computer BUT allow another USB device cable to be plugged into it.
    6. Speed up charging times to about 1 hour vs. 6.

    Doesn't last long enough

    • Written by from Kingston Upon Thames

If you don't charge the mouse every time your not using it, the battery will run out in one or two days. Also the battery level indicator is not very accurate. Generally, it goes from around a 100% to 40% and then to 6% at which point you have minutes before the battery will run out. Also make sure you turn the mouse of before you charge it or it doesn't charge. The battery level will remain at the same level.

    It is useless

    • Written by from Bern

I bought this without checking the reviews - what a mistake. I opened up the package and left the battery to charge on the very attractive desk station. After about five hours I inserted it into my magic mouse - not an easy step, the plastic housing is very very fragile and bends so easily. Got it in OK, then the mouse would not switch on. The battery was charged (full green LED on station). So, struggled to get it out as the housing is not a good fit to the mouse. Read the various support forum advice from Mobee - was no help. Inserted again - again no power on the mouse when I switched it on.

Then, I read all the reviews here and found that once the power was working then many people had problems with the BT link not being stable.

Decided to take it back and I bought a set of rechargeable batteries.

Disappointing - the idea is great, execution does not work.

    Very Disapointed

    • Written by from Market Harborough

I bought this a couple of weeks ago and have been unable to get it to pair with my MacBook Pro. The battery pack did not fit snugly initially and required some effort to get a smooth fit. I contacted Mobee and followed their instructions to check the battery pack was fully charged and inserted correctly. It is, but still will not work. As soon as I remove the battery pack and re-insert regular batteries it pairs instantly.

This will be going back to the Apple Store.

A word of warning - the Mobee website has a forum with many people voicing similar concerns. I wish I had checked this earlier and avoided a costly mistake.

I see that Apple require me to give at least 1 star, when I want to give zero

We went through two of these trying to make them work. The battery pack that replaces the actual batteries doesnt fit right. If you push it all the way in so that it is flush with the bottom of the mouse, the Mobee battery won't work. You have to pull it out just a touch for it to connect. The problem is when you are mousing you eventually put downward pressure on the mouse which then pushes the battery back into the flush position cutting power. We tried this with two different Mobees and three different Magic Mice. Same problem with every combination. It's not the mice or one bad unit. It's the Mobee design. It is off about an 1/8th of an inch. We contacted the manufacturer and no response. They are in a dump somewhere. Be cautious buying this product.

Great Product, don't believe the haters

    • Written by from Allentown

I put off buying this product many times because of the negative reviews. But they are just wrong....

If you have any hand-eye coordination or a passable amount of mechanical ability, the battery insert CAN be installed correctly, and it will not fall out. If you've changed the batteries on your magic mouse, this is simple.

Insert the top portion (near the optical eye) FULLY first. Then insert the bottom portion FULLY, until the slide thing clicks into place. Done.

I got to the point where I couldn't stand having to change the batteries on my magic mouse so often. This is an elegant solution.

Also, my battery percentage seems correct. Not sure if i'm reading something wrong.

Get the product, you won't be sorry.

    Complete Flop

    • Written by from London

I purchased this as a gift. The Mobee backing/battery pack was difficult to install properly, and once installed and charged up, it did not respond with the magic mouse. Additionally, removing the battery pack and backing was impossible. I had to bring the whole mouse into an Apple store where they were able to (thankfully) remove it.

This product is a good idea in theory, but does not fit well into the magic mouse and does not power the mouse properly. Also - once installed, the mouse doesn't actually rest in the cradle properly either.

I returned the product and was very disappointed in this product and wouldn't recommend it.

    Perfect! Love it!

The Mobee Magic Charger absolutely awesome. I read so many bad reviews that I almost didn't buy it.

One complaint about the charger is that the new battery pack didn't fit in the mouse. This is ridiculous. It fits perfectly. There is no problem whatsoever. Some reviews even said that the pack would fall out of the mouse occasionally. I lift and move and carry my mouse all the time and that has never happened. I even carry it in my pocket with no trouble.

I also read complaints about bad battery life. I've been using this mouse for almost two weeks and I'm still at 48% battery life! It's way better than I thought it would be.

I don't know what those bad reviewers are doing with their mouse, but if you use it as directed, this charger and pack are the perfect companion.

    Excellent product, very happy!

    Great Product

    • Written by from Mayfield

This product works as advertised but needs far better instructions. First off you cannot simply drop the battery pack into the mouse. It must be tilted far enough to allow the lip to completley engage, and then to make sure the lock in fully engage, otherwise the battery pack will fall out. If you do it right the pack stays in place. You will never see 100% charge due to the type batteries the unit uses. When it shows around 80% charge and the green light is lit it is fully charged. I like the fact that it is a USB charger but you do use one of your limited USB ports. That is why a mliti-port USB adapter is a wise investment. Macs do not have enough USB ports as we all know. All in all this product is well built, looks good, takes up very little room, and works as advertised.

    Too bad..

    • Written by from Montreal

I would have loved it if it would have worked in the first place!

I ordered the charger and the magic mouse together with my new macbook pro (lion). The mouse alone was working perfectly but as soon as I tried to install the charger's battery in it, nothing was going right.
The battery didin't fit and it took me tools to remove it from the mouse.
The charger's base would stay in "charging status" (red light) for ever and never changed for "fully changed" (green light)
The macbook pro never recognized the mouse after I installed the charger, and even after I'd put back some normal batteries(!)

I had to go to the Genius Bar so they would test it with me, agree that the charger was not working well, tell me to send it back and get my money back.
Luckely, the Apple Store gave me a new mouse to replace the one that had been broken by the charger.. And sending back the product, thus getting my money back, was a piece of cake.

Overall, there are some good and bad comments about the charger so I guess the product is not exactly 100% compatible or complete.. I just hope there's gonna be other brands or versions of this one 'cause I love the idea of a charger for my magic mouse!

Great idea, needs a little work

    • Written by from Henefer

This is a great idea, I was going to buy the rechargeable batteries for my magic mouse. But I decided to give the mobee charger a try. The big problem I have with it is that maybe 1-2 times a day the door will just open up. Then you loose connection you have to seat the door again (which doesn't seat all the way, probably the reason it keeps popping off) then reconnect the mouse your your Mac. Seams to take a long time to fully charge. Even when the green light stops blinking (meaning it is charged) if you go look at the battery level for your mouse it will only read about 93%. If I could get the door to stop popping off I would give it 5 stars.

Please take note of these reviews

    • Written by from Bath

I have been using the product now for 3 months and I have to say I am bitterly disappointed with it.

There seems to be three main issues with the product and considering these issues I would say the the developers really do need to go back the drawing board on this one.

    1. The major issue is the amount of drop outs when using the mouse, it is constant and is time consuming to have to try and re connect through bluetooth setting each time.

    2. The product does not have an accurate measure of charge it either sits at 100% or 7% in my case so it is very difficult to measure when the product should be charged.

    3. The lifespan of the battery in comparison to standard rechargeable batteries seems to be a lot lower not sure whether this is to do with constant drop out and re connections but only adds to the frustration of using it.

Simply not good enough I am afraid.
