    Worst Connecters In The Market

    • Written by from Regina

I have owned this drive for 2 years now. It handles all the bumps and occasional drops I give it as promised.

However this drive doesn't stay connected worth a darn. I originally used firewire using the supplied cable and a longer one. One side or the other would just fall out....constantly. I decided to try the USB 3 side and experience has been worse. Sitting on a table and just typing will cause the drive to disconnect and worse not fall out. Worse because you don't know what side to wiggle to get it going. Worst yet is it takes the drive 20 seconds or so to connect so you don't know if you have it plugged in again or not.

    Rugged piece of @$!#@

    • Written by from baltimore

Several months after use, I finally dropped this drive. I bought it precisely for that purpose, accidental drops, since I have kids. Only thing, the drive dropped less than two feet onto a soft carpet, pulling out the cable in the process. This jammed the head onto the platter and completely erased all 995.50GB of data!!! I just backed up everything for the final time and was ready to store the drive. I dealt with customer service , which was insensitive to my problem, as the drive did not perform as advertised. I actually allowed me a one-time permission to open to drive without voiding my warranty. I'm an industrial designer and have saved a drive or two in my day, so I carefully opened the drive, and confirmed that the head had been jammed due to the fall. I successfully released the head and was able to read data until I used disk utility, which erased the data. So, soft was that fall, so easily all my data was lost. THIS DRIVE IS STRONG AS EGGSHELLS, don't let the pretty color and rubber boot fool you.Its poorly made of plastic and thin aluminum. Its a SAMSUNG drive and the interior warns the consumer "Do not drop"! False advertising I'd say, and a weak warranty.I'd like my money back thank you. Learn from this... Data recovery can reach the thousands, so back up your data by other means!

Died and lost all of my data.

    • Written by from Brockville

I bought this specific hard drive in August 2013 because of all the great reviews and the shock proof case due to the amount that I travel. It is now January 2015.
I had stored all of my pictures, movies, computer backups and university assignments on it.
Until about a week ago everything worked flawlessly.
However I travel a lot like i mentioned and although all the airports and countries I was going to I always took the hard drive as a carry on and took extra care.
Yet once arriving in New Zealand I plugged the hard drive into my mac to upload some more pictures, and there was nothing.
My mac did not recognize the device at all.
Nothing had happened, the cord was in great condition so I was totally confused as to why it wasn't syncing
Long story short, I took the device to a local computer store the next morning and they informed me that the device died and that I lost all of my data.

Currently still trying to contact LaCie to try and retain my data, but so far no luck.
So, if purchasing this hard drive, have another backup as I just lost all my pictures from the past 6 years and no amount of money will ever be able to change that.

    Excellent fast drive

I use this drive with FCP X and it totally rocks, excellent speeds, and pretty quiet. The capacity is good, and the rugged protective casing allows me to easily transport the drive in my backpack. Very happy with it!

    Doesn't work

    • Written by from Klamath Falls

Used approximately six times and then the unit failed. It may be the cable, it may be the USB plug, it may be the unit. Nonetheless, it doesn't work. The hard drive may be rugged but if information isn't stored ruggedness doesn't matter.

    very pleased

Not having to deal with a dedicated power supply was the first of a series of pleasant surprises I encountered while unboxing this drive. As it turned out, I had some legacy Firewire hardware that works great with this unit, but when I'm traveling light, the USB cable does it for me without sacrificing speed. I really like this little orange-wrapped bundle!

Not good apple support at all by Apple

    • Written by from Auckland

Can't believe that Apple won't stand by the two year warranty and are saying I have to deal with it myself. Very disappointed that I have been an Apple use from the eighties and this is the help you get. Don't buy anything non Apple through Apple. They then had the nerve to 'google' the contact details for LaCie! Thanks Mitch (not) - Apple Australia. Apalling!

    Excellent performance

I do a lot of outdoor imagery, so it's really important for my equipment to be built to rugged specs. This drive gives me that, along with a decent amount of storage and fast interfaces that let me easily connect it to all of my gear. Frankly, this unit has become indispensable over the time I've owned it.

This is not the first LaCie drive I've had, but it is the first Rugged. I am very happy with it so far. It is solid and top quality. I also love that it is bus-powered, so I don't have to carry an additional power supply around. The USB 3 is very fast.

I bought one of these drives a while back, and I love it. It's fast and works great. I've never had any issues with it, either transferring files or carrying it around. The rubber sleeve protects the drive very well. I'm satisfied with it thus far.

I bought this drive because it came with the USB 3.0 connection, and because it is rugged. I need fast and reliable data transfer for my work and this little unit is good for that. The drive's enclosure is tough and sturdy, just as the name suggests.

    Quick secure drive

    • Written by from Waterdown

I previously purchased the Thunderbolt version of this Lacie rugged hard drive and was unpleasantly surprised at how slow the transfer was from the drive to my MBP especially for the money I paid for it. It was nowhere close to the proposed transfer rate. I quickly returned it and bought this Firewire version and it was cheaper and very fast compared to USB 2.0 - this is a great external drive...rugged and fast and well worth the money. You won't be disappointed.

Excellent drive. Looks great and works quietly. I like the USB 3.0 speed - it's just perfect for my needs. Rubber sleeve is good, stops the drive from getting scratched. Makes it easier to locate the drive, too - bright orange stands out.
