Truly outstanding product with minor issue you likely will never experience

    • Written by from Bristow

Most ear pieces are barely loud enough to hear others on a speaker phone on the conversation. This unit is painfully loud at full volume and plenty loud at lowest volume. Superior to all others tested in that regard (and I test many). 6 stars out of 5

Ear piece battery life is actually as stated and amazing. Lasts all day talking (not standby, actually on the phone) so now I don't need two units to carry me through the day. Superb, 6 stars out of 5

Siri integration, not a problem. Press the big button and hold, beeps and then Siri perks in and she calls people by name, finds locations on maps, launches apps, and even lets me send text messages or recite notes in Notes (or in Pages etc) all very nicely. By far the best Siri experience for bluetooth (and I compare my Infiniti in that mix). 5 stars out of 5

Bluetooth paring is a breeze and it pairs easily with multiple devices. Works with my Mac as well as with my iPhone and I use my Mac with Siri (voice recognition) for notes and similar. Only issue is that near by Bluetooth can disrupt the connection so at my desk with enough bluetooth to warm my coffee, it will sometimes burp and lose the connection to the phone. Others that I have provided same unit to in the office do not have the issue. I tested two separate ear pieces and they both do it. I do have 16 blue tooth devices connected to my iPhone so take this with that grain of salt. 4 out of 5.

Weighs nothing. 5 out of 5 stars

Comfort, never have had a 'burning ear" from having it in all day with silicon pressing on ear. 5 out of 5

Controls, much better than prior products and all other products tested to date. The on-off tactile switch is a welcome change, visual green indicator for on. Love the english accent on the woman's voice. 6 out of 5 stars.

My last favorite earpiece was the Plantronics Discovery 975 which was $129. This one scorches that product at every turn. Best $59 you can spend on a bluetooth earpiece.

    Excellent Design, Fair Sound Quality

    • Written by from MILWAUKEE

I've gone through almost all brands of in-ear Bluetooth ear sets. This one is firmly in the center. The design is the by far the best of any I've bought: beautiful shape, compact, nice functioning buttons, nice status lights (packaging is beautiful too). And it's really easy to sync and charge. But the sound quality leaves a lot to be desired. Bang & Olufsen was clearly the best in sound. Bose was next. The A170 is OK for phone calls, but listening to music and podcasts with it is disappointing. I know it's not supposed to take the place of stereo ear sets, but when I walk my dogs I'd like to listen to music for a short time - and I could do that with the Bose. But other than that I'm really happy with the A170. I need to have my hands free when I'm on the phone with customers and this is perfect. I'll be buying the Parrot Zik for serious music listening.

    missed the mark

    • Written by from San Gabriel

Half the point of having an iPhone 5 (6.1.4) is being able to use siri to assist. This headset did not communicate with siri at all; It did activate siri, but siri couldn't hear commands. After a long convo with Plantronics technical support, who posit the fault is with siri, I am sending it back.

Otherwise, the headset seems sturdy and well made. I was sad it didn't work, its cute as these things go.

Was hopeful, but this unit performed poorly

    • Written by from Los Angeles

As always, not a fan of the long review - so I'll get straight to the point

I bought this unit at the Apple Store in Santa Monica, CA, USA

    - The unit does not play well with Siri at all
    - The dual mics do something to keep sound activated and do not allow Siri to think through your response
    - There is a long delay between the activation of Siri and then Siri responding to your request
    - Sometimes Siri would hang up as if it were waiting for more instructions (I really think there is something going on between the dual mics and how the iPhone is interpreting the signal)
    - Of 4 different units I have been testing in the last 5 days, this unit is the only one that lost connection with my iPhone 5 (iOS 6) four different times. (it would find the phone and sync up again automatically each time - but it dropped one test call because of it)

    - It is a good looking device, and matches the "look" of the white iPhone 5 perfectly
    - It does not feel cheap in the hand or ear (feels worth the money)
    - the charger that comes in the box is great (it is a dual USB port car charger with the ability to plug in both your ear piece and your phone at the same time)
    - The life of the headset is displayed on the status bar of your iPhone

I hope I received a faulty device and that it should not have performed so poorly, but I did, and it was too bad. I really wanted this device to work.

    Shocked by bad reviews...

    • Written by from Birmingham

My first review ever and only because I was going to send a pal a link to this headset and saw the terrible reviews. Maybe because I have an iphone 4, without Siri, I've not experience the negative aspects but I find it a great bit of kit and less than 50% of the (frankly ugly looking) BOSE version. The light weight of the device is outstanding, and once you have fitted the correct (and easily interchangeable) ear plug, you'll soon forget you even have the device in your ear. It's battery life will long outlast the iphone's charge so no issues there (plus you get a battery meter on the iphone's home screen so never short of knowing its status). You also get told when the phone is connected/disconnected (has reminded me a few times that I have left the phone behind in the car/house so quite a nice perk for that). The image/feel is excellent, easily the best looking device out there in my opinion and the majority (let's face it) look awful. Finally the call quality is superb, very surprised to hear that being criticised, most people tell me it's much clearer on the headset then the phone. As for not hearing music in better quality from one reviewer I saw (are you kidding me that you buy a mono-ear device for listening pleasure?!) I actually thought the music playback was pretty good. It's honestly a brilliant device, especially if you factor in the money, should retail at £100 for something this well made, but if you want to spend the sort of money the BOSE device costs then go for it, but this device is so much more impressive for the cost and looks lots better. I would like it even more if it told you the caller's name but expect the Siri iphones might do that, otherwise am really glad I never read these reviews as would have missed out on a gem.

    Great Performance

    • Written by from Lagos

I bought this headset while in London and I love it. The performance and the look and feel in my ear is very nice. When it got lost, I had to replace it immediately. I recommend it anytime, any day for busy people like me. The noise cancellation is also very good. My callers can't tell that I'm using a headset to make and receive calls.
It was a little tricky to set up but once I did, it worked excellently well.

    Very clear conversations

    • Written by from Sharon

I have used other plantronic bluetooth headsets that were terrible for conversations: always distorted and hard to hear and be heard.
This A170 has fewer bells and whistles then the others, but the sound quality is as good as using the iphone microphone and the battery time is longer.

Excellent w/ iPhone 5, truely hands-free; works w/Siri and Pandora

    • Written by from Wilmington

Immediately worked great. Love ability to charge this device and iPhone using this one plug either in the wall or using in car..... Version tried to sell me the 165 Model in their store but it did NOT have dual charging cord like this 170 has. Ear piece is comfortable. Well made. Good investment. Thanks APPLE for having this in your store.

    Very satisfied with the A170

    • Written by from New Albany

As airline pilot, I have used Plantronics headsets during my entire career. Having had a very good experience with them, I decided to buy the A170 for use with my iPhone and iPad. I am extremely satisfied with this headset because:
    - Fits either ear very comfortably.
    - It is very reliable (always connects).
    - Has excellent volume to be heard in most noisy environments.
    - Has very good noise canceling sound pick-up.
    - Remains connected while the phone is in a central location and I move anywhere in a 4000 sqft house, or the backyard.
    - Has 7-hour battery life in listening/talk operation.

    I've had better bluetooths

    • Written by from INDIANAPOLIS

This ear piece connects well with my iPhone 5 but however does not communicate with Siri. I am a hairstylist so I need to have my hands free but when I'm with a client and my phone rings the person on the phone can hear everything in the background including anything my client might be saying in my chair which makes it very difficult to use while working(multitasking). The background noise cancelation feature does not work that well. It does work well with streaming music.

    A great headset.

    • Written by from Vancouver

This is a great headset for $60. Pairing with my iPhone was instant and effortless. The sound quality is quite good for phone conversations but I wouldn't use it for music or movies. Works when my phone is 15-20 feet away or in my pocket. Good battery life, charges in no time and is very comfortable to wear. The Apple store only had black so I ordered the white online which matches my phone. Very happy with it.

    Good but

    • Written by from Croydon South

I have been wearing this for 3 weeks now & whilst its ok its far from perfect.
The sound quality is good but fuzzy so I give it 7/10.
People I call say they cannot hear me clearly, unlike my previous bluetooth.
It does work with Siri but I have found it does not always understand my voice commands.
You cannot just push the button to activate Siri, you have to push & hold for the 2nd beep then let go of the button, or it disconnects.
When a call comes in it will ask if you want to answer or decline which is a feature I like, if only it worked properly.
I have found that it only answers a call when it feels like it so most of the time I just push the button.
It will not stay in my ear but that just could be my ears.
It is not very comfortable with the ear hook, which is the only way I can wear it.
Considering the brand & price I expected better.
Overall I would not buy this one again.

    Not worth it

    • Written by from schwenksville

I rated this a 1-star, but it should really be zero.

While many aspects are good, including the incoming sounds, the outgoing sound (what I sound like to others) is horrible, and virtually unusable. This could be perfect in every way, but when others can't hear you or the quality is so annoying as to disrupt calls, the device is worthless.

    Don't expect high quality!

    • Written by from Romford

Having only ever owned 'cheap' headsets I thought it was time to invest in a high end product, I searched many reviews of many different headsets and narrowed it down to 2 or 3. I went in to Apple to buy the Bose series 2 and was tempted to buy the A170 as well, taking full advantage of there 14 days returns policy! The spec of this headset looks too good to be true..... and it is, call quality is terrible. The noise cancellation doesn't work that well, the people i spoke to when testing this product could only describe it as 'like a shower running constantly in the background'. Streaming music isn't much better, very 'tinny' and muffled.

After trying out LOTS of these headsets I eventually found the Bose, as long as the limited battery life isn't a problem then it is head and shoulders above EVERYTHING on the market. Perhaps the short battery life is because of the greater quality is possess, who knows...

Did not perfrom as expected - returning

    • Written by from Victoria

It's cute, and the price is good, but I will be returning this. The headset could not recognize when I was saying "Answer" so that feature did not work for me. The call quality was awful, staticy and I could hear a disembodied self-echo which was very distracting. I tried to use it to listen to music while cleaning my house and I kept having to go get my iPhone and bring it into the room with me because the signal could not travel far enough. (note: small apartment.)

The earpiece was comfortable, which was nice. I liked having the selection of ear options. The multi-charge cord was a nice idea, but if it was designed specifically for Apple then why not design a white connector instead of a black one?

I used to have the Bose headset and I will be ordering it again. It's more expensive but it works way better.

    Best earpiece

    • Written by from Christchurch

This is easily the best bluetooth earpiece I have ever owned... and I have spent a fortune buying, losing and throwing away others. I have used Jawbones, Jabra and plenty more (must have owned 5 or 6 over time).

It is not the most "highly spec'd", but it is easily the most effective and functional unit. I use it w my iPhone 5 and Macbook Pro for Conference Calls, watching programs instead of working/ while driving, Siri while driving and even for phone calls.

It is lightweight, but robust. 7hrs battery life, and charges very quickly and sits in my ear extremely well without around ear clips like I have needed for any other units. It even stays in while eating etc.

Sound quality is good, but importantly it is also loud enough that it can be used in the real world without having to be rammed deep into the ear.

    Love it.

    **Its also super well priced!

    Drops calls

    • Written by from Snowmass Village

I purchased this at the Apple store in University Village, Seattle. It looks good and matches the IPhone nicely. However, I found that on any conversation over about 7 minutes, it would disconnect with the IPhone. I returned it and tried another one. Unfortunately the second one is doing the same thing. I plan to return it tomorrow and try something other than the Plantronics Marque A17.

    Best I've Used!

    • Written by from Madison

A few months ago I purchased a $70 Jawbone and was not pleased at all. The unit was quiet and distorted/muffled. I returned the unit and decided to hold off on purchasing something else.

That is until I was in the Apple Store and saw this. I have to say that both the white and black versions are the best looking earpieces available today. They go perfect with the iPhone 5. It's very minimalistic and sexy.

Pairing took seconds, and I made my first call before I even left the mall and was shocked at how loud and crisp the sound was. I actually use the piece with the lowest volume setting even for people that are not loud talkers. Talk time is good, build quality great, and looks amazing. I give this one 5 stars.

I do have to say I'm shocked that this earpiece isn't available in more places. A quick internet search returns a link to this product page but it doesn't appear to be advertised anywhere else and there are no reviews on any tech sites. I'm assuming this is due to being a newer device, and hope that it gets the attention it deserves over time.

Also, while the other reviewer gave this 2 stars, it seems that most of his issues were with the way the headset interacts with Siri. I have to say that I've had no issues in this regard. Hold the button down on the ear piece and there is a slight delay before you can begin speaking, but beyond that, no issues for me worth docking 3 stars.
