    Thrilled with this purchase

    • Written by from Austin

I'm a semi-pro photographer and I've found it's awesome for adding an extra element to indoor shoots as well as adding general ambiance for a room.

    The Good:
The system is a snap to set up.
The array of colors is amazing
    The alarm function works great!
Good value over the life of the bulbs
The ability to create your own "scenes"

    The Bad:
    Large Initial investment
The app is a little clumsy
Not as bright as standard bulbs - but still sufficient

That said, I'm happy enough with the system where I'm planning on picking up an additional bulb and a light strip.

Easy to use, very handy product

Installing the bulbs and the bridge is very easy. Aswell as controlling the lights via iPhone, internet or iPad. The only bad thing is, after a power cut the lights will turn on to their brightest mode regardless if you had the bulbs turned on or off.

    Great Product but Flawed App

    • Written by from WHITEHALL

The Hue Starter pack of 3 bulbs and the bridge worked perfectly. The two extra bulbs were recognized by the app and were named etc, etc. However, when scenes were selected in the app, the two extra bulbs in the next room did not respond. They did respond to the slider controls in the app and did turn off and turn on using the slider controls. Curiously, the Philips Hue Community website (which can recognize one's Hue bridge/hardware) had scenes created by people which, when selected, worked perfectly with my bulbs. Therefore, the app is terrible and needs work but the Hue lighting system is wonderful and worth the money.

    Nice Bulbs, Terrible App

    • Written by from INDIANAPOLIS

I think it's really nice that you can change the shade of the bulbs and the color (not that I really do much of that) and that you can do so from your iPad or iPhone.

    That said, that's about it.

The app is terrible. It took me two days just to find out how to set up the app to automatically turn on when I come home. And then it didn't work.

So then I thought I'd try out the alarm feature and wake up to light and not a beeping alarm. It didn't work either. (Good thing I set my regular alarm as back up.)

Also my house is only about 1,500 square feet and I can only use the bulbs in the rooms that are less than one room away from my wifi set up (which the Hue's "bridge" needs to be connected to.)

I was sold on the concept, and all the neat things that were promised. I even went out and bought 2 extra bulbs because I wanted all these options all over the house (which is when I found out I can't use them if I get too far away from the "bridge")

But in the end what I ended up with was 5 $60 LED light bulbs - and the "bridge."

Not sure if I'm having these problems because I try and operate the system from two different iPads and one iPhone, but if thee's a way to coordinate all those devices together it's buried so far down in the app that I'll probably never find it.

Great if you don't experience stability issues

    • Written by from Ottawa

Received these as a present. Have had them for about 3 months. Initial set up was easy. Just follow the simple steps and you will get it all set up on your home wifi. Setting it up to access outside of your home wifi is not as obvious but easy once you figure it out (best way to do so for me was to disconnect my iPhone from my home wifi and follow the prompts in the Hue app after doing so).

Once you get it set up it works great. All in all it must have taken me less than 15 min for the full setup. I also really like the fact that if you are away from your wifi and there is an internet or power outage, once everything comes back the Hue system restarts to work without you having to do anything (which has not been my experience with other systems). This is particularly useful when you are on vacation. The app is great to play with as well and the luminosity of the lamps is great!

So, why only three stars? Because of a well documented issue with the bridge. After a few days the connection from the bridge to the internet stopped working. Wifi still worked, so I could control the lamps from inside my wifi but not from outside of it. This is well documented online with many potential solutions that I tried and did not work. In the end, after a very frustrating couple of days, only a hard reset did the trick (deleting application, closing account and opening new one with Hue portal, resetting router, modem and hue bridge).

It has now been working without an issue for a while, but the fact that the issue I faced is still being documented and does not seem to have a clear solution is a major problem for me as it makes it hard to know when it may stop working again.

I still have the hue and really like it, but this uncertainty warrants a deduction of 2 starts from me.

    Good Product, A Few Caveats

    • Written by from Lake Zurich

I've had a Hue starter pack for about a month now. The infinitely adjustable colors and ability to draw color schemes from photos, digital artwork, etc allows me to create unique illumination patterns, in addition to the pre-set ones on the app. Since I don't have smart home functionality yet, the ability to set timers, schedules and turn the lights on remotely for my greyhounds has been useful as well.

The bulbs themselves are only rated at 600 lumens, which is adequate for rooms such as a bedroom or den but could be too dim if used in larger rooms or main living areas. My wireless router (previous-gen Airport Extreme base station, dual band N) seems to slow down when the Hue system is active (when an iOS device is connected to the Hue bridge). Multiple tests with Speedtest.net have confirmed this observed drop in speed. The "bridge" that controls the Hue lamps must also be connected to a wireless router via a network cable to function.

Overall, the Hue system has been great for its novelty as well as practical features. I'll probably wait to add more bulbs until they're cheaper and at least 60w equivalents (800 lm) are offered.

Eaxactly as advertised - the new way to light your home

    • Written by from Winnipeg

Just came from the Apple store in Winnipeg. Bought this starter pack and literally installed it to my wi-fi in about 3-5 minutes tops. Simply Brilliant. The bulbs are very bright at 600 lumens and the rainbow of possibilities in lighting is endless. The free app by Philips is easy to use, good design and creates the perfect mood for any situation. I plan on buying more bulbs in the near future to eventually change all the lighting in my home. The perfect solution for energy efficiency as they use only 9 watts and the safety benefits speak for themselves. Thoroughly impressed. This is my first app enabled product and it didn't disappoint...

Really cool lighting, but abysmal app on iPhone and iPad.

    • Written by from Windsor

This is an ingenious product. We hold a house concert series and I got these for lighting the artists. Works perfectly and our guests (artists and guests) loved them. I probably sold 5 people on these. They were asking how and where to buy them.

The only detraction is the application to control them. It needs help, it could be so cool. I'd give it a 5-star rating if the app was better.

I downloaded a color wheel image and used that as my basis image for setting the light colors. Then it was a snap to dial in the desired mixture of reds and blues to make a nice "stage" setting.

Expensive, but really, really cool product. I'll be buying more lights for other locations in the house.

    Absolutely Awesome!

    • Written by from West Covina

First and foremost, it's easy to setup. I purchased the starter kit with 3 bulbs and the bridge at the Apple store. I followed the directions from the website and within minutes had my iPhones, 2-iPads, and iMac controlling the bridge. The bridge needed to be updated but an icon came up once I wanted to set an alarm to a light. The bulbs are bright enough, I replaced with 75w incandescent and just depends on HOW YOU SET UP YOUR SCENE, yes, you can setup hundreds of combinations per lamp if you want. As most of the electronics I purchase I read up on comments and ratings, there was a lot of haters for this product and almost didn't buy it. It was a youtube post that changed my mind. By the way, there was a post that they could only program for 7 days a week, um, yeah..... There is many ways to program each light, set up timers and even location so when you get home the lights turn on and off when you leave.

Not bright enough and app is horrible and not user friendly. Works Harmony

    • Written by from Dedham

I purchased these yesterday from the Apple store and saw reviews about the brightness factor of these bulbs but ignored it. I switched out my 75 and 100 watt bulbs for these and noticed instantly that the room got darker and these bulbs are very dim. I want to say they are equivalent to 60 watt bulbs. The changing color modes is pretty cool and you can go from cool to warm and various colors and blends. The app on the iPhone is horrible and not user friendly in my eyes. It takes lots of stumbling around to find what you need and the timer settings keep telling me my bridge needs updating even though I am using the latest updates. The color blending is okay but unless you want your rooms to be red and blue etc, there is no usefulness to this. I have yet to try this turning lights on prior to coming home. The app keeps telling me I need to be connected to Wifi and kicks me over to the Phillips website. The one thing I do like is that this is configured to my Harmony Ultimate Remote. Using the remote I can set up activities to turn on with the lights at the same time plus I can adjust brightness and tone setting etc. That to me was great. However the bulbs are so very dim, not sure I can highly recommend this to anyone if they want to light up a large room. The email and Facebook and Instagram signaling via the bulbs was a pretty cool factor but I know I would never use it. In all these bulbs are just okay and need work to make them a brighter bulb for the consumer.

    Awesome Light Package

    • Written by from EAST STROUDSBURG

Purchased the Starter Set yesterday. Set it up this evening and had everything running in a few minutes. Setup app on my Wife's phone, Son's phone and a couple of iPads. Even was able to share custom settings to all 5 controllers. It was very intuitive and not hard at all to setup. We made a custom "Halloween" setting and surprised our Granddaughter when she came upstairs from watching a movie. Can't wait to get more bulbs and do more "light" designing! I highly recommend this product. Lots of fun.

    This is the future!

    • Written by from Godley

LED's will (if not already) rule the world and soon every light bulb from cars to planes, homes to skyscrapers will run on LED's. This is an innovative LED product from Philips, very bright and with the Apps available gives you full control over the lighting in your home (even from anywhere in the world)!
You can use timers (good security deterrent) or even GPS to detect when you approach your house so it turns on your lights with the colour / brightness you have pre-selected in your rooms
It even work as an extension of my Philips Ambilight TV and changes the room colour ambiance to match the film I am watching!
Energy saving as well and though a bit expensive at the moment, this will come down in time
    Brilliant product!
Sorry Thomas Edison but your 130 years of Light Bulb domination has ended!

    Amazing!

    • Written by from Jamaica Plain

I've had this product for almost a year now and completely love it. While the manufacturer's application is bulky and cumbersome the third party apps you can download are amazing. I have completely relamped my house with these bulbs. While they are pricey, I feel they are worth it. It's a total hit during parties and holidays!

The only downside to these bulbs is that I have two kittens who like to tug on the lamp cords. If the bulb glass shatters, you can't replace it. This is the only downside to this system.

BUY IT! You won't regret it!

I am very happy with the Philips Hue

    • Written by from Hong Kong

I am waiting for it to come to Hong Kong for a year. I am really happy with it. Easy control and room scene and color. But I hope I can change the scene from a physical switch or remote. I can do lot of powerful things through iPhone/iPad, but, I want to change the scene quickly. I need to pick up my phone > unlock > find the Hue apps > change the scene.

    Top Review for Hue

Love this product. I bought the starter kit and then had to decide which lamps to get, IKEA does a white ball glass lamp for $14. Dot those around your home and you can set up an atmosphere to suit any mood. So simple to set up. It is a little pricey, but given the saving in energy bills and constantly replacing standard globes it won't be a huge amount of difference in the long run. Love it!!!

Great product, software could use some work.

    • Written by from San Jose

When I first saw this I wondered why Apple was selling light bulbs, but after I realized what it did I was pretty impressed. Love the fact that you can set various lighting scenes and turn them on and off when you aren't home. No surprise, my kids love playing with it too.

The software is ok, but I wish it were better. Philips has done a nice job of updating and adding features over time but it still has some annoyances. For example, you can't turn on a scene that has a schedule attached to it remotely. You have to be on your home wifi to do that. In older versions of the software, scheduled events could not be repeated daily, but at least they have fixed this now. Seems to defeat the purpose of having scheduled scenes if you can't turn them on/off while away.

    Some really nice features:

    - Geo fenced so you can have scenes turn on when you arrive at home or off when you leave.
    - Scheduled scenes can be set to start/stop with some randomization of the actual time so it's not exactly the same every day. This is particularly good for when you are on vacation and want it to look like people are home.

Looks like there are a bunch of 3rd party asp which can now also control the lights based on music that is playing. Seems interesting but I haven't tried it yet.
