    Good product: well thought out

    • Written by from Irvine

First day of having this wallet/case, I had a few gripes:
-The wallet would not close all the way unless I put the phone face up and the weight closes it. It really bothered me.
-Very uncomfortable talking on the phone. Wasn't sure how anyone could hold the phone.
-No place for cash. It's too big and won't let it close on me.

Having the case for a month, I can say I like it!
-The wallet fully closes now whichever side I put it on.
-I learned that I needed to fold back the case with the credit cards and such sticking out. The case gave grip to the phone and now I feel uncomfortable without it.
-Still no place for cash, but I feel like it grew on me. I carry 3 credit cards, my license, and a couple receipts and it's more than enough.

Overall, I would recommend the case, but it does take getting a little use to. I'm the type of person that always forgets either his wallet or phone, and having two in one makes forgetting both much harder. It is a little thicker in my pocket, but I've gotten use to it, and I don't need to worry about having my keys in the same pocket as my phone anymore!

    A++ would recommend!

Review for all the Canucks out there

    • Written by from Regina

Just received the Twelve South BookBook Case for iPhone 5, literally. I have had it for less then a day and here are my first thoughts:

    The Specs:
    - The spine measures about 2cm wide, and the front/back measures 13cm x 7cm.
    - As stated it has spots for 3 cards and your ID (or another card I suppose)

    The Good:
    - Initial quality appears excellent, the comments about being able to smell the leather are true
    - Yes, you can use both cameras with the case
    - I have a black iPhone 5 with the brown case and it looks great, I have seen the black on black as well and it looks very sharp as well. Have not seen a white phone in this case.
    - Yes you have access to all buttons / ports on the phone
    - I like the idea of having my wallet and phone all-in-one

    The "On the fence"
    - I am still trying to get used to the size, it is bigger then the wallet I used to carry and is much bigger then just having a phone in your pocket. I wouldn't say you would carry this around in your front pocket of your jeans. (Wondering if overtime it will get worn in and be a little more compact).
    - Holding cash, when you have say 10 bills, seems to be a bit of an issue, there is a place for cash behind the cards, but CDN money (different size then US) when folded in half still sticks out the edge and over part of the spine, and with 10 bills folded that way the case does not close well. If you are someone that rarely carries cash (or very little), then this is not an issue. I am still trying to figure out a good way to store more then 4 or 5 bills in it.

Like I said, this is just my initial thoughts, I will update in a month or so.

    Twelve South does it again

    • Written by from ROSEVILLE

I love this latest BookBook. The snap in case is an improvement over the old slide in type of the 4s version. I also like the camera hole and the fact i can hold more cards is a plus. You can't go wrong if you get this. It eliminates the need for a phone case and a wallet. I have one on my MacBook air and my New iPad, awesome!!!!!! I get a lot of complements when people notice it.

Poor quality, cheap build & plasticky finish – not a patch on the 4S case

    • Written by from Manchester

Like others here, I was a proud owner of the iPhone 4S BookBook case, which is a piece of design genius.

In stark contrast, the iPhone 5 case is a case study in poor design. The lessons learned from the iPhone 4S case seem to have been completely thrown out and this case is made entirely differently — and of significantly poorer quality materials. The leather has a very plasticky finish, unlike the lovely natural leather used in the 4S case, which aged beautifully. Skimping on the materials in this case has resulted in the leather along the right hand edge of the back cover parting from the case — the 'hem' stitching clearly is along the very edge of the leather, meaning it does not hold it effectively.

The plastic 'frame' in which the phone must be 'clipped' (and scratched) is covered in a thin synthetic (plastic) suede. With a mere 6 months of careful use, this has rubbed off in several places, leaving ragged edges and exposed black plastic.

TwelveSouth have managed to take one of the best iPhone case designs and completely ruin it — one imagines to achieve reduced costs and more profit. If you're looking for an example of how not to design an iPhone case, then this is it. I would much rather slide the phone up to take a photo (as in the 4S case) rather than have the ugly plastic frame elements. All that was needed was the exact same case as the 4S one, but a few centimetres taller. Instead we end up the most disappointing and overpriced iPhone accessory I have yet to purchase.

I cannot recommend strongly enough that you avoid this case. Hopefully, Twelve South will see sense and the classic BookBook design will be restored. But I wouldn't hold your breath.

    It's now 'the norm'

    • Written by from Norwich

Firstly if you have an Iphone 5 you must have a case of some description.

Why this case? Well some people won't ever want to combine their wallet and phone so this is not the case for you.

But if you are looking for less clutter in your life this this is the one for you. You don't need to carry round 19 debit, credit and store cards all at once (and if you do then you shouldn't be spending your money on iphones and £50 cases) This case is for the professional who wants to reduce clutter and look smart whilst also achieving the practical benefit of protecting their phone.

Previously every time I left my house/office/other location I had to do the man dance....wallet, phone, keys. And I would physically have to locate them on my body. Now I only have to find 2 of those things - so by my maths this case has improved my life by 33% !!

    Really Good Case

    • Written by from Cardiff

I bought this case the other day, the quality of the materials is really good and the phone snaps in place so is really secure. Yo can also charge the phone and access all the buttons etc. whilst the phone is in the case. My only issue is that the case does not stay shut, could perhaps do with a fastening, otherwise a really great, stylish and quirky case!

    Great Case with one exception

    • Written by from South Jordan

I tried numerous cases for my iPhone 5 before buying this one. I will say upfront that this case will not replace your wallet if you still carry a lot of credit cards and cash. On the other hand, if you're a minimalist like me, then this case is perfect for you.

Like others have stated, the case doesn't close all the way at first. The problem is even worse if you put cards in all 4 credit card slots, or put money in the space underneath them because bill have to be folded to fit there. I carry two cards and my drivers license in mine and lay the case down with the camera side up to keep it closed. I tried putting money under the phone like another user suggested but the phone wouldn't seat properly. I put a folded bill in one of the credit card slots and that's working well. This problem seems to be resolving with use (I've had it for 3 weeks now) as the leather softens.

I haven't had problems with callers hearing me like other users have. I use earbuds most of the time, but also hold the phone in case to my ear without problems too.

Overall, the BookBook for iPhone 5 is a great case and I'm keeping it. It looks good, is made of quality materials, provides great protection and I expect it to last for the lifetime of my iPhone. The only thing that kept me from giving it a 5-star rating is the problem with the case closing when fully loaded.

    Good while it lasted

    • Written by from Carlisle

Had mine for a month and it protected my iPhone 5 well.

However, the back corner closest to the camera hole appears to be a weak point and the leather has started to curl round the phone enclosure, pulling the leather away from the camera hole. The leather isn't strengthened in those corners in the same way as the others.

Build quality just not the same as their other products. Shame.

Blocks the mic, difficult to hold

    • Written by from Albuquerque

I got my BookBook case from the Apple store in Albuquerque. I thought it would be just what I wanted: one case to hold my iPhone 5, driver's license, credit cards, and cash. I like to keep it simple. After 3 weeks I am utterly disappointed due to multiple flaws.

First, the inside surface of the case is leather, which at first I thought was cool, but then I noticed that that the leather rubs up against the iPhone surface, smudging the glass and leaving a cloudy film that is hard to remove. Not much later, I discovered the microphone problem. I had several phone calls in which the person on the other end had difficulty hearing me. Later I was told by an Apple Genius that the bookbook case blocks the microphone on the back of the iPhone! Now, this only happens if you wrap the front of the case around when you talk. But that is the obvious way to use the case, because otherwise the front just hangs there like an open door, making it very awkward and difficult to hold while you talk. So evidently, Twelve South never actually experimented with using their case with an actual iPhone, bc they should have seen this coming.

Finally, the bookbook card holders are very tight, and if you're like me, you want quick access to your debit card. I'm tired of struggling with the case, pulling and coercing my card just to get it out.

So basically, this case has a cool look and potentially useful design, but it was implemented poorly and so it fails pretty badly. I no longer use it, and at $60, that's extremely disappointing!!!

Weakest of the Twelve South bunch!

    • Written by from THAME

After buying the BookBook cover for the 4/4S and loving it I thought my iPhone 5 needed the same high quality treatment and protection, however if you are looking for something that will not scratch the side and edge of your shiny new iPhone 5, keep looking. The cheap looking plastic that you have to snap your phone into by 'pushing down firmly' scratched the bezel of my phone, not happy! The plastic looks out of place especially around the camera hole which is not in keeping with Twelve South's other products. With the slightly more fragile nature of the 5's finish I thought nothing will do but a BookBook case, this was based on the high quality finish of all their other products. I have not got a bad word to say on their MacBook Pro, iPad or 4/4S cover, all of which have proved durable and valuable but I do feel they have really let the side down with the iPhone 5 cover.

If you do buy this cover please be extremely careful when putting in and taking out your phone.

If anybody from Twelve South reads this, please do not use plastic in future BookBook designs!

I hate this case wish i hadn't bought it

    • Written by from CORAL SPRINGS

This case looks great but it's a real hassle to use when you're using the iPhone as a telephone.

When you're not using the phone, the cover doesn't close all the way, it stays 1/4 open. If you want it to lay flat you have to put it down so the camera lens faces up so the weight of the phone closes the case. I have to use a rubber band to keep the cover closed. Also the cover is in the way when your making calls or receiving calls.

When I make and receive calls when the phone is in the case, everyone i talk to says, "I can't hear you, we must have a bad connection, i can't hear a word you're saying, let me call you back". I respond, just hold a second, and i remove the pone from the case and then they can hear me clearly.

This case somehow blocks the transmission of the phone or possibly the microphone and I have to remove my phone from the case every time I get or make a call. It would be better for an iPod touch but not the iPhone 5.

I have had this case 4-days and HATE it. I would love to return it, but I never received my email receipt and i didn't get a printed receipt from the Apple Store Boca Raton, FL. I also had them throw the box away while I was in the Apple Store setting up my new iPhone.

The case looks great but it needs a different type of hinge or a more flexible hinge.

I am going to contact the Apple Store and see if there is any way I can exchange it or return it.

It's good looking and the leather is nice, but it not functional for the iPhone 5.

Not as good quality as should be

    • Written by from Durham

I've had this cover for about four weeks and have noticed that there is about 1cm of the covering on the plastic that the phone clips into is coming away. Not good when you are paying nearly £50 for the cover, I'm not sure if apple will replace it but will be taking it with me next time I'm at the apple store to see.

    quality product

    • Written by from london

A good quality product that is tactile, visually pleasing and make a great case come wallet. However, the only one downside is taking calls is a little impractical as the spine of the case is rigid making if difficult to fold the cover back on its self to allow you to put the to your ear. I've decided to keep the product as its made of leather and it should stretch out and become easier with use.

ruins sound on iPhone 5, cool look

    • Written by from Overland Park

I had a bookbook for my iPhone 4s and absolutely loved it. couldn't wait to get the new one for my iPhone 5. Looks cool but it muffles the sound even when you hold it open. I don't know if the reviewers who like it have the same problem. Very very disappointed because I love the case but it makes my phone unusable. When I contacted 12 South, they said no one else had the problem and would not give a refund. Obviously thats not true as seen above. It probably just needs a bigger hole for the back microphone but 12 south just seems to ignore it.

    Beautiful case. Beautiful functionality.

    • Written by from Centerville

This case has exceeded my expectations.

The Good: My iPhone 5 snapped right in and is held very securely. I have my drivers license plus 3 credit cards in it and it doesn't feel stretched at all. The case is incredibly attractive and looks like on of those little field notebooks. When I show it to people they all comment on how beautiful it looks and feels. Some of complained of call quality going down but after making several test calls I was told that my calls sounded great. This newer version also has the camera hole in the back unlike the one for the iPhone 4/4s.

The Bad: If you use hands free accessories to talk (e.g. car connection, Bluetooth earpiece, or headphone/speakers included with phone) then this case is ideal. If you speak by placing the phone to your ear a lot, then you might be a little inconvenienced as it is slightly more bulky and you have to flip the one side of the book to the back.

The Ugly: None. This case is absolutely beautiful.

As others have noted, poor quality. I've had mine for less than three months and some stitching has started to fail and finish over the plastic surround that hold the phone has worn away exposing the plastic.

The back side, near the cut-out for the camera has deformed too. Not what I expected for this price.

The maintenance/cleaning blub you get with the case says the manufacture likes the worn look and that they think it looks better that way. To a point I could agree but would you really expect them to engineer in wear points that I and others have noticed?

This is the first Twelve South case I have bought. And the last. Not for my phone my iPads or my MacBook.

I had been planning on buying their BookArc stand and although it has some great reviews - so does this case (and I see the good case reviews are from new owners). So I'll probably look elsewhere for a stand too.

I really do hope this review does two things - firstly, make people think twice before buying this case and secondly, demonstrates the damage a poor product can have on future sales across a brand's range.

Terribly distorts the microphone on phone calls

    • Written by from Dracut

I'm having the same issues as well.

1st was an iPhone 5, I got it replaced as it could be a BAD MIC

2nd is now an iPhone 5S, and still the same audio issue.

I also love the case, I just wished that Book Book has advertised the issue.

Took me hours of wasted time and lots of frustration till I find the issue with the case.

    Just DONT BUY IT.

Wonderful way to store the essentials together

    • Written by from Boston

I'm thrilled with this iphone wallet! I previously had a knockoff version that wouldn't close and could only hold two cards, which just didn't work for me. I'm glad that I took the chance on ordering this, even though it was more expensive. The leather smell is wonderful, but the most important part for me is that the spine is crafted like an actual book. It is stiff and already made to account for a full wallet, so it will lie closed even when it has cards and cash in it.

The full wallet fits in the breast pocket of my coats and the back pocket of my jeans, so I can always carry the essentials without needing an entire purse.

    Not as good as 4S

    • Written by from Kansas City

I loved my 4s case. Normally don't take the time to write a review. But the iphone 5 version of bookbook case blocks some of the sound when speaking into the phone. I was disappointed and the person on the end of the call was always asking me to repeat myself. Don't waste your money on this product.
