    Not a good product

    I have had so many problems with this product. The lights constantly go on and off, even when I'm home. It is so frustrating. In addition, the software keeps dropping my plugs and I have to set them up again. I have two and right now neither of them works with the timer and only one works when I turn it on through the app. One of them I'm just using as a manual on and off switch. They are expensive and not worth it as they are so unreliable. I'm so disappointed. Remote access has never worked. Belkin needs to upgrade their software and do a complete overhaul. I feel like I've wasted a bunch of money. I don't know where the five star reviews are coming from, probably from within the company. The software and app are horrible. DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT.

    Great concept, extremely poor execution.

    The product support for this device has been very bare and almost non existent. Don't get me wrong, Belkin is a stellar company and tends to lead the market with innovative new products. Belkin, however, falls short in execution of their devices.

    The major concept is down but many variables not tended to. The app for this product often disconnects or cannot find the Insight Switch or the Light Switch. This was also apparent and foreshadowed in the setup process that had to be redone a couple times to pair the product.

    The lights will randomly turn on and I'll come home to data logs listing 10 hours + use, which makes me think not having the Belkin products would actually be more efficient. I don't need metrics from the app to tell me using the wemo products doesn't make sense.

    Firmware updates are released here and there but ultimately haven't done much for the overall experience. The app definitely needs an overhaul, it's so archaic and many of its options are useless. Unreliability just screams out.

    I love this product when it works but I find myself more often frustrated with the switches randomly turning on and off intermittently, the app not connecting with the switches, have to restore to factory settings, the switches turning on when I'm away and remote access not working to turn the switches off. In the timeframe I've had this product it's disappointing that almost over a year, there has been no improvement. It's clear from the support page to how the app handled to actually reaching customer support, that there is an apparent theme of neglect to these products. I would recommend seeking a better executed product from a different brand. Even existing ratings for these products seem fake and produced.

    If you work in the IT industry specifically network engineering then consider buying this product.

    Good luck if you don't.

    The WEMO's are just so farken temperamental to different network environments for the average user it's gunna be a nightmare!

    Works as advertised...

    I installed this unit in my main entrance hallway to control the external lights. It was easy to do. Those complaining that you cannot remotely control this unit do not know what they are talking about. It is false statement. I am at work and I just tested the WeMo app and I can control my various Belkin WeMo units. Another time, I was in another city and turned off my bedroom lights using cellular service and it worked. Another reviewer complained that his unit lost access to his WiFi about a dozen times in one night. I have never experienced this. The manual clearly states that you cannot use metal face plates because it will interfere with the WiFi reception. I think this is the person's problem. Read the manual people. Great device and I can do everything as advertised.

    Lovely idea, dreadful concept

    Love the concept. Unfortunately, Belkin's execution leaves you wanting, and their customer support is unable to provide any meaningful help, despite the positive tone in the emails, and blurbs of technical information they send. The Lightbulbs are OK, and function well, with a satisfying, if not warm, light when the app works. WEMO app is dreadful. It is clunky, has only basic features for scheduling or programing, spotty in its ability to quickly respond, and defunct at times as it looses, for no reason, the programs/schedules you have created, requiring them to be rewritten.

    Do Not Buy if you have more than one home.

    Very short sighted product. If you have more than one home useless you can not control switches in more than one location. For example if you put a switch in at your home and want to put a switch in at the cottage it will not accept it. It accepts the devices but does not display them and even better it locks the IOS device so you can NEVER see the other lights yet they look programed on site

    Functions Well, But Could Fit Better Behind a Group Switch Plate

    Easy to install, except I installed it with a bank of switches just inside my front door and the WEMO switch did not fit flush under the multi-switch plate used for the bank of switches. There was only a minor bend in the plate with the WEMO switch on the end position (small enough to live with), but if I wanted it in the middle position of the set of switches, it would have created a very noticeable bulge in the middle of the switch plate.

    It was easy to connect to my wi-fi network, easy to program using the iPhone app. Remote controlling the switch through the app works well. Updates to firmware haven't caused any problems. There is one limitation in the auto on/off programming (rules). When using sunset or sunrise times for a rule, it just takes the sunset/sunrise time that day and uses that for all subsequent days instead of using a different sunrise/sunset time each day as the days get longer or shorter. The sunset/sunrise times can be refreshed but you have to manually refresh the rule in the app for this to happen. Also I think a timer function would be great where you could use the app to tell it to turn on the switch now and then turn off after a set amount of time.

    Works great when FW/SW are in sync...

    I've been using WEMO devices for some time now. I have five in use and they are all working well. They were working poorly about 6 months back, could not see them most of the time even when on my home network, but at least the programmed rules kept working fine. That was either resolved by a FW update or SW update. Working well now and I love the them. I have two outside and they stay attached to my network, no problem.

    Check your home wiring before you buy !

    Check the Belkin wemo website for the installation video before you decide to buy this product, most Australian homes don't have a neutral wire in the switch so the installation cannot proceed. Your house will have neutral but not worth the cost of routing the cable to your switch. I believe (from a sparkie) that despite the warnings , the switch will work without neutral but you are installing against the vendor's recommendation.

    The Belkin WeMo switch does not fit in a standard Australian surface mount box (I had to get an adaptor plate on top). That wouldn't be so bad if it worked but so far every second time I've tried to use the remote, the device shows as "not available". Even when I'm standing right next to it !

    When they have worked the bugs out and reduced the size a bit it might be a good buy. Until then, go elsewhere.

    PS Belkin marketing material says something about DIY, but electrical installations in Australia require a licensed electrical contractor

    Does not work with the AirPort Extreme

    Have been using this for a while with a Belkin router and has worked great. Bought a AirPort Extreme 5th generation and spent hours but could not connect it to the router. Searched internet and found a lot of people with same problem. AirPort Extreme and AirPort Utility do not have enough settings available to fine tune it to work with the WeMo. End result is I have to run 2 routers now ... AirPort Extreme for my MacBook Pro's / Apple TV's / and iPhone, and the Belkin Router just for the WeMo. Wish Apple would resolve this problem.

    Unreliable and frustrating

    Don't waste your money...this thing drops WIFI about a dozen times a night, and it is installed about 10 feet from my Airport Express. When it drops the signal, the light goes out. It might come back on, maybe yes, maybe no. Firmware is up to date. Reinstalling (multiple times) doesn't help. Lousy execution of a good idea.

    The latest firmware update has killed remote access. Can no longer access devices if I am not connected to my home network. Stay away from the firmware update until the issues are worked out.

    The switch was easily picked up on my wifi network and works flawlessly. Its almost magical the way you can set it turn on at sunset (which is different everyday, duh?) or off at sunrise. I have the 2 Wemo Insight switches and they work great too. Thanks Belkin!

    Excellent - if you have the correct electrical box

    I installed one of these last week and it works great. Now we can turn the light on and off by pushing the switch itself or using the app installed on our iPhones. The kids thought it was hilarious that mommy was controlling the lights remotely while on a trip. The app shows if the light is on or off and even when remote it seems to always match reality.

    Installation notes - you must have a fairly deep electrical box (the thing in your wall where the wires come in) for the Wemo switch to fit, as it is a very deep part. If you have very stiff wire or multiple wires coming into the box it might be a tight fit. The front of the Wemo switch is a standard size so you can use the existing cover from a rocker type light switch (if it isn't metal) instead of the oversize plate that is included. Finally, the firmware update that you will probably have to do after connecting to your network should be done after you have finished installation and your circuit breaker is back on for good. It took several minutes and cutting power in the middle of a firmware update is a good way to brick most electronics.

    Don't trust the reviewers

    This thing works great if you are at home and on the same WiFi network (in other words you are too lazy to get off the couch).

    However, what I really wanted was a system that lets me control my lights REMOTELY. This is not that system.

    Here are all the problems I've experienced in 3 days of ownership. I have 3 of these switches:
    - Lights don't accept a WiFi password with special characters. (yes, really!!).
    - The app says a light is on or off, but it will sometimes be wrong, even after a force refresh. So now you never really know for sure if your lights are on of off.
    - From remote, randomly the lights disappear from the app. Sometimes one shows up but not the others. It's a crapshoot. Sometimes it takes several hours before a light comes back online. I have confirmed this is not my internet, but is a problem on Belkin's server back-end.
    - From remote, when you tap a light to turn it on, it just spins and spins and never actually responds. Other times it does just fine.
    - When it does respond some times it takes up to a minute. Other times it is less than 5 seconds, and other times it says it worked, but it really didn't.

    Bottom line, this product relies on Belkin's servers to phone home over the internet, and they don't have enough bandwidth to support all the devices out there, making for a really terrible experience when you are away from home. Do not trust these 5 star reviews. They were probably written by people that only tested local WiFi functionality (which works great). Remote functionality is utterly useless.

    These are going back to the store for a refund.

    I purchased both the wall plug and the light switch. After 15 days the light switch failed. A real bummer since I paid to have an electrician install the product. Another surprised about the product was that when setting up the rules both switch and wall plug could only work when set at the exact same time. Belkins agreed to replace the switch but additional problems occurred via their email return form. It has been a real headache. Thank goodness I saved my old wall switch or I would not have lights that would work until my replacement arrived.

    It took me about 15 minutes to take out my old switch and put in the new switch. I follow the directions that I found on the website it was easy. I turn on the power I loaded the app I connected to Wi-Fi that took about another five minutes. Then I push the on off button on my iPhone and it worked flawlessly next I turned off the Wi-Fi on my phone and just used the 3G and it still worked flawlessly. And amazing product totally reliable well worth the money. In the past when I went on vacation I would put photoelectric cells on all sorts of different lights but when you drive past the house that's lit up at 4 o'clock in the morning it doesn't really send out the right message that people are at home. This will be great especially if I forget to turn on the lights for the dogs if I stay out longer than what I thought I would. I would have no hesitation recommending this to anyone

    Works as advertised!

    Great product! Installation and setup was easy and straight forward. Been using it for two weeks for our front porch light and it works flawlessly. Light is programmed to come on at sunset and stay on till midnight 7 days a week. Also set to come on in the morning at 5am and go off at sun rise on weekdays. Highly recommend! Plan on getting more.
