This is the most FANTASTIC piece of equipment I have ever used. Automatic back-up and a very powerful router. I also use Apple Airport Express's to receive extended WiFi reception in my garden and swimming pool house. My fibre speed is 1Gb, which I can easily receive thirty plus meters from my property. Everyone should own/use an Apple AirPort Time Capsule! Thank you Apple...

The Best router I've Owned. Seamless Backup.

    • Written by from Prescott

I've never been inclined to skimp on routers because people in my house spend a lot of time behind their computers and iPads. I need something that is fast and reliable, even with more than a dozen devices talking at once. The Airport Time Capsule is the fourth router I've had and although all the previous ones would crash or bog down, I've had no such experience with the AirPort Time Capsule. It's the only router I've been remotely satisfied with. While part of the reason for the speed is the fact that the entire house is wired with ethernet and almost every device is plugged into that network, the same was true of previous routers. My experience is that the Wi-Fi range is slightly better than that of any previous router.

There are three of these devices in my home, two of which are dedicated backup machines. Each is more than a year old and I've had no problems with them. This does not prove that they are always highly reliable, but it does suggest that they can be. Backup is seamless, invisible, reliable, simple. I've found these to be much easier to set up than previous versions of Apple's Time Capsule devices.

    LOVE IT!!!

    • Written by from Brooklyn

Absolutely love it!! WiFi range is insane! Data rates are incredible! Super easy setup and I love the AirPort app on iOS devices in addition to the AirPort Utility app on my iMac. Wireless Time Machine backups!! No more plugging in an external hard drive every few weeks.

One tip: I suggest manually setuping a 5GHz network, because more often than not, the AirPort Time Capsule will default you to 2.4GHz which is much slower, though has a broader range (good for large houses). I live in a railroad apt in Brooklyn, and the 5GHz is full bars throughout.

    Worth it's weight in gold

    • Written by from London

I've just lost a computer, the one I do my full time work on, which was a disaster. I have a Time Capsule, which has been ticking over in the corner of the room for the last year or so. When the new machine arrived, I plugged it into the Time Capsule and did a full restore, and it was as if I had never been without a computer, it had every single file, setting, application from the moment I lost my old computer.

Anyone who values the content of their computers needs to have something like this, as the moment when your computer is gone is an awful feeling unless you have it backed up completely. The Time Capsule has worked faultlessly and when the absolute worst happened, it's saved the day. Great product.

    Great Range

    • Written by from Indianapolis

We live in a large multi story older house with internal masonry walls. WiFi very difficult to reach all parts of house so we have Netgear powerline devices which are not 100% reliable.

We installed the Airport 3TB in a home office at the far end of our home about 150 feet from a back enclosed brick-walled porch where we have a smart TV.

The device is a giant improvement and now we can get uninterrupted hi-def service in all parts of the house. No fades or drops.

It took about 20 minutes for the setup to complete and the indicator light to turn green. So be patient.

    Love it

    • Written by from Orland

My Time Capsule arrived in the afternoon just before I left for work. The next morning I hooked up all the cables and started it and my iMac. Set up took only a few minutes. I waited until after supper to start the back ups. My iMac backed up, via Ethernet, 101 GB in just over an hour. The MBP ( my 3 year old developer machine ), via WiFi, backed up 194 GB in just under 7 hours. I checked WiFi range with my wife's iPhone 5s and it's about 50% more coverage.
I am a little disappointed, I expected to set up seperate passwords for main network & Time Capsule settings but see no place for that. Also for some reason my sister's Kindle Fire will not connect to my guest network but will to the main.
Over all, so far, very pleased.

    Twice the Internet Speed!

    • Written by from North Hills

We just installed our Time Capsule last night and I used it to create a new wireless network. I checked the speed of our old wi-fi modem (Motorola Surfboard) and we were getting 52.34Mbps download speeds. Checked the new Time Capsule network and got a whopping 106.52Mbps! We're finally getting the speed we're paying for.

    Powerful under the hood

    • Written by from Lafayette

Being a wireless & security tech, I chose to test this device before making it the heart of my home network. What I discovered is that not only is the wireless rock solid when the device is placed properly in the premises (which many people neglect), but the easy-as-pie administration via AirPort Utility is surprisingly flexible and powerful. I was able to set up a very secure network with a hidden BSSID, a fairly secure guest network that broadcasts (think honeypot), and easily added extenders (Extreme and Extreme+) that allow me full streaming signal strength across 1 acre of property and anywhere in the house. The networking is in bridged mode so I get DHCP IPs from the cable modem, thus avoiding dual-NAT. Despite all the fiddling I do with my Macs, they all get backed up automatically and the drive and printer sharing has worked as well. I always take the time to make sure I'm spending my money smartly, but there simply wasn't any other product on the market as solid as this that could perform all of these functions, reliably and without a ton of drivers and setup time.

The best wireless ROUTER/BACKUP solution out there!

    • Written by from Juneau

This is by far the most functional and most controllable (with app) router via any iDevice/Mac! I love how it stable and quickly it backs up my MacBook Pro and other household Mac devices. It is possible to use it as a stand alone 'network drive' but that's not what this device is designed to be. Like I said, it is possible, you just have to search the 'net for the "how-to".

The internet connection is solid. Initially, it wasn't, but after updating the firmware, it runs like a champ. I have never had to reset this router at all since then (it's been at least 6 months or maybe even longer).

The tech specs and description speaks for itself, but if you use this as it is intended to be used (a backup source, hence 'time capsule' not 'network drive'); you will be more than pleased with it's speed, range and durability.

I'm so tired of these 1 star reviews tainting the final overall score of this exceptional product. Use it for what it is and rate it for what it's supposed to do, not what you were hoping it would or wouldn't be!

    LOVE this thing!

    • Written by from Moorhead

It's too bad about the experience the negative reviewers have had... Here's how my experience started:
    1) Receive the device a day sooner than expected
    2) Took it home over lunch break, opened the package, verified it was in perfect shape (it was)
    3) Removed my Netgear NightHawk router from my LAN
    4) Plugged necessary data cables into the device, then powered it up
    5) Made a trip to the next room to my iMac
    6) Spent PRECISELY three (3) minutes turning on Time Capsule and configuring the device via the Airport app in "Utilities"
    7) Started the first backup of my iMac (588 Gigs)
    8) Made and devoured a party pizza (15 minutes)
    9) Went to check, and discovered that everything was already done!

Fast, easy and, considering the backup potential with 3 TB, not terribly expensive. For real-world testing, I ran five speed tests using www.speedtest.net, and my 50/5MB connection tested at 48.6/4.73 via wireless.

    Love This!!

    • Written by from miami

Is it expensive? yes... is it worth it? yes, at least for me... I have no idea why people say they had problem with the setup cause I did it all in my old iphone with absolutely no problems in less than 3 minutes. Love the design, is heavy but it needs to be is a back up plus you don't want it to easily knocked to the floor. I bought 3TB not that I needed it but why not?

    Great; Now!!

    • Written by from Desert Hot Springs

Had problems with the 2.4GHz band quitting intermittently. Called support and they replaced. Same thing with the replacement. So after much troubleshooting and head scratching; had an "ah ha" moment and moved the device a couple of feet away. It is now "rock solid". Still don't know why but it works; that's all that matters!!

    Easy install

    • Written by from Valencia

Easiest install ever. Had Time Capsule up and running in under 5 minutes. Had a 5th Gen Time Capsule and left it powered so the new one asked to copy settings and that was it. Done! Added an Airport Extreme to expand network and then finally re-added back in the original time machine to not only expand the network with 3 devices now have 2 time machines. The Time Machine asks which disks to back up to and since there are 2 is asks if I want to alternate backups on each one. Great Idea! Yes I do for redundancy.
