Don't buy this if you use a Motorola/Arris SURFboard cable modem

I bought the AirPort Time Capsule - 3TB because I wanted a Time Capsule and I wanted improved range and speed for my Wi-Fi as I was disappointed in the SBG6850's throughput. The Time Capsule functionality has worked well for me which is why I gave it two stars rather than one.

The Wi-Fi performance fast and it has good signal strength. That's the good news. The bad news is that I sufferred a year of frequent connectivtiy issues that were very hard to diagnose. If you read the Apple forums, you will discover a reaccuring theme of unresolved issues around the ATC dropping internet connectivity. I eventually proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that the issue was the ATC and not my ISP or cable modem. So I turned off the ATC's Wi-Fi and replaced the functionality with a separate Wi-Fi router. Now have solid Internet connectivty and an extremely expensive backup drive.

Good concept, but why no Thunderbolt?

Can't believe they didn't include a Thunderbolt port on this back up device. Glaring omission that would have made this a very good product. When you are doing a large backup over Wifi, takes WAY longer than it would have with Thunderbolt. Apple seems increasingly lazy with its designs.

Love it, but it's got it's it's quirks

Seamless, invisible, reliable, inane. This product serves well and transparently as both a WIFI router and backup. It's the second iteration of Time Capsule that I've relied upon for years. Yet, in the two instances they've each been called upon to save the day, they just didn't quite deliver. Each failure was accompanied by a permanent "Disk Temporarily Unavailable" notice. These occasions were hair-raising and tense, and after days of round-about-work-arounds I was able to retrieve my data. Imagine that, my data actually coming back to me from a device that was purchased to do just that. Sounds easy enough, but this product just doesn't deliver when it's needed. Either that, or I've had some pretty lousy luck.

The process by which success came was circuitous, doubtful, annoying, and tedious... All words I've never used to describe an Apple product.

As much as I like Apple and the concept of this product, I'll be foregoing it shortly in favor of a different strategy.

Intermittent shutdown problems...Latest version has engineering problems!

I have had Apple routers and Time capsules for many years and until recently the experience has been mostly good. However, that said, I am very disappointed with the performance of my second 3TB TC purchased in late 2014. I have had to return and exchange it twice now and am currently "testing" the third unit.

It would appear there is a serious hardware or firmware problem that leads the device to power down intermittantly. It can power down once or twice a day sometimes, or may go for a week or more just fine then quite. The only way to reset it is unplug and replug the power cable and it sputters back to life.

The sign of failure, apart from the obvious is the LED light goes off (while still plugged in).

Apple have been pretty good and quick about providing a new unit. I am surprised though they cannot seem to read or access the TC diagnostics on board which supposedly get sent back to the mother ship also? Looking into the logs it is, and should be possible for the techs to see if thermal or other factors tripped the unit OFF.

Oh well..I'll continue testing #3 and hope for the best this time. I think its most likely the latest engineering version thats at fault. Its worth noting my original 3TB TC purchased in 2010-2011 works just fine and has never given any problems.

    Bad product

AirPort Time Capsule is the worst product apple makes, I lost all the data and now to backup my laptop again, I need to have it connected to it over 24 hours. It's extremely slow! If I had the option to return it, I would do it in a heart beat. I do not recommend this product to anyone.

FANTASTIC PIECE OF EQUIPMENT - EVERYONE SHOULD OWN ONE!

This is the most FANTASTIC piece of equipment I have ever used. Automatic back-up and a very powerful router. I also use Apple Airport Express's to receive extended WiFi reception in my garden and swimming pool house. My fibre speed is 1Gb, which I can easily receive thirty plus meters from my property. Everyone should own/use an Apple AirPort Time Capsule! Thank you Apple...

The Best router I've Owned. Seamless Backup.

I've never been inclined to skimp on routers because people in my house spend a lot of time behind their computers and iPads. I need something that is fast and reliable, even with more than a dozen devices talking at once. The Airport Time Capsule is the fourth router I've had and although all the previous ones would crash or bog down, I've had no such experience with the AirPort Time Capsule. It's the only router I've been remotely satisfied with. While part of the reason for the speed is the fact that the entire house is wired with ethernet and almost every device is plugged into that network, the same was true of previous routers. My experience is that the Wi-Fi range is slightly better than that of any previous router.

There are three of these devices in my home, two of which are dedicated backup machines. Each is more than a year old and I've had no problems with them. This does not prove that they are always highly reliable, but it does suggest that they can be. Backup is seamless, invisible, reliable, simple. I've found these to be much easier to set up than previous versions of Apple's Time Capsule devices.

I've owned three - and all of them switch themselves off.

Yes, I know - triumph of optimism over experience, but I really have tried three of these, and all of them have taken to switching themselves off. After the second one failed, I suspected an electrical power problem, and so bought a UPS to protect the TC. It made no difference; the TC will still switch itself off, after a period that has varied from ten days to under 15 minutes. Disconnecting and then reconnecting the power lead always restarts the device, but I need it to be reliable.

I'm an Apple Fan, but good grief. This is garbage.

Shame on me for buying these over and over. I've owned 4 and all have gone back in too short of time. I saw one guy saying his went bad in a year. Mine seems to be just a little longer than that. Bottom line, run the other way and take your money with you. You'll be better off!

    Don't waste your money

I bought this product and we couldn't get it to work properly. After troubleshooting with Apple and getting nowhere, we finally brought it into the Apple Store. They determined that it was defective and sent us a new one. The new one worked for a little more than a year and then it completely quit working. We used it as our primary router for about 5 months of that year and when it worked, it worked great but it did not last long. When I bought this, I was under the impression that I would be also use it as a storage device but that wasn't the case. This is only designed to back up your existing storage. I think that if this were configured to also be a supplementary storage device and be a little more user friendly, it would be a great concept but I think the product quality definitely needs to be improved first. I would not recommend purchasing this product until they improve it.

    Speed problem

What I've learned is that TWC wifi modem is much faster than the airport time capsule 3TB, but to perform a wireless backup, a TWC wifi modem has to be in a bridge mode and airport time capsule (wifi) host. When TWC wifi modem setup as a host wifi modem-router the speed of the Internet is as promised even when I'm 50 feet away from the router, unfortunately the time capsule will not perform a (wifi) backup because it has to be the host router according to apple tech support recommendation. I would never buy this airport time capsule 3TB if I knew that its so slow. I pay for a fast internet connection 100 Mbps but because of the slow airport time capsule I'm getting around 20-30 Mbps.

What happened? I thought products were improving. Terrible Wifi.

I was very excited to upgrade my old Time Capsule to the sleek new 3TB, but I was in for a rude awakening. I had lots of problems from day 1 with dropped connections and devices not even picking up the new Time Capsule. Support assumed I had a bad antenna and had me drive 2 hours to the nearest Apple Store. They exchanged it with no problems. The 2nd try was EXACTLY the same as the first. Dropped connections and devices not able to access the TC. I even bought a new Wifi printer. As soon as I plugged in my old TC, everything worked great. There won't be a 3rd try. This thing is garbage. It's like having a PC again...

    LOVE IT!!!

Absolutely love it!! WiFi range is insane! Data rates are incredible! Super easy setup and I love the AirPort app on iOS devices in addition to the AirPort Utility app on my iMac. Wireless Time Machine backups!! No more plugging in an external hard drive every few weeks.

One tip: I suggest manually setuping a 5GHz network, because more often than not, the AirPort Time Capsule will default you to 2.4GHz which is much slower, though has a broader range (good for large houses). I live in a railroad apt in Brooklyn, and the 5GHz is full bars throughout.

    Worth it's weight in gold

I've just lost a computer, the one I do my full time work on, which was a disaster. I have a Time Capsule, which has been ticking over in the corner of the room for the last year or so. When the new machine arrived, I plugged it into the Time Capsule and did a full restore, and it was as if I had never been without a computer, it had every single file, setting, application from the moment I lost my old computer.

Anyone who values the content of their computers needs to have something like this, as the moment when your computer is gone is an awful feeling unless you have it backed up completely. The Time Capsule has worked faultlessly and when the absolute worst happened, it's saved the day. Great product.

    Great Range

We live in a large multi story older house with internal masonry walls. WiFi very difficult to reach all parts of house so we have Netgear powerline devices which are not 100% reliable.

We installed the Airport 3TB in a home office at the far end of our home about 150 feet from a back enclosed brick-walled porch where we have a smart TV.

The device is a giant improvement and now we can get uninterrupted hi-def service in all parts of the house. No fades or drops.

It took about 20 minutes for the setup to complete and the indicator light to turn green. So be patient.

    Love it

My Time Capsule arrived in the afternoon just before I left for work. The next morning I hooked up all the cables and started it and my iMac. Set up took only a few minutes. I waited until after supper to start the back ups. My iMac backed up, via Ethernet, 101 GB in just over an hour. The MBP ( my 3 year old developer machine ), via WiFi, backed up 194 GB in just under 7 hours. I checked WiFi range with my wife's iPhone 5s and it's about 50% more coverage.
I am a little disappointed, I expected to set up seperate passwords for main network & Time Capsule settings but see no place for that. Also for some reason my sister's Kindle Fire will not connect to my guest network but will to the main.
Over all, so far, very pleased.

Do not touch this piece of junk

I have been using Apple products since 1983 for business & private use. This would have to be the absolute worst Apple product that I have used & it is disgraceful that it carries the Apple name. Absolute waste of money, time and effort.
Slow, erratic, unreliable, poor support, made no difference to network. Ignore the starry eyed 5 star reviews and read the one star reviews.
About to replace this expensive piece of junk with an external hard drive. Will avoid all Apple accessories in future.
