The easy-to-configure QuickTime Streaming Server and QuickTime Broadcaster are preinstalled on Xserve to provide a complete, integrated solution for broadcasting and streaming multimedia over the Internet. With QuickTime Streaming Server, Xserve can stream digital video — for news, entertainment or educational content — over the Internet using RTP/RTSP. QuickTime Broadcaster captures and encodes QuickTime content in the latest media formats, including MP3, 3GPP, MPEG-4 and AAC audio. Together they provide an inexpensive, end-to-end solution for delivering live events over the Internet.
Live events can be streamed over the Internet with the help of broadcast software, like QuickTime Broadcaster, delivering the resulting stream to the server. The intuitive QTSS Publisher interface makes it easy to upload prerecorded media and simulate live broadcasts by creating playlists of music, lectures, interviews, and other prerecorded media. To provide “anytime” access to feature films, lectures, presentations, and other content, you can use on-demand streaming. In this scenario, each user initiates the stream independently, so everyone experiences the audio or video content from the beginning.
With ultrafast processors and high-speed storage and I/O, Xserve offers outstanding performance: A single Xserve running QuickTime Streaming Server can deliver more than 5,000 independent low-bit-rate streams simultaneously. And you can easily scale out to meet increased traffic by adding additional servers.
