New Hampshire Middle School Expands 1 to 1

Armand R. Dupont Middle School was one of six schools awarded a grant in 2003 by former Governor Craig Benson to pilot a 1 to 1 learning program in grades 7-8. For the 2007-08 school year, the school was able to expand the program to include every student in grades 6-8. According to Principal Betsey Cox-Buteau since having the Apple notebook computers, students are paying more attention to learning.

Maine Learning Technology Initiative Worth It

Maine continues to lead the way in demonstrating that 1 to 1 learning can enhance student learning and better prepare them for the 21st century. Ongoing research by David Silvernail, professor at the University of Southern Maine and director of the Center for Education Policy, Applied Research, and Evaluation has shown differences in student learning with a notebook computer. One of the key factors that has enabled Maine to be successful where others have struggled is their emphasis on teacher professional development. “We were fortunate that we always viewed this as an educational project, not a technological project,” observes former Governor Angus King.

Apple Notebooks Change Teaching and Learning in Maine

Although skeptical at first, teachers and students at Ellsworth Middle School have embraced their 1 to 1 program using Apple technology. According to Doug Libby, a teacher for 32 years, the Apple notebook computers have been the best tool he has seen introduced into education.

Maine 1 to 1 Going Strong

Five years after the state of Maine provided all 7th and 8th graders with Apple notebook computers, teachers and students say they would not want to be without the technology.  All Maine’s middle schools have elected to continue their 1 to 1 program for another 4 years, and 14 school districts has allocated district dollars to expand the program into their high schools.

Chinese Delegation Visits Apple 1 to 1 site

A delegation of Chinese officials including three members of the Ministry of Education recently visited the Reed Union School District in California. Their visit included a stop at Del Mar Middle School, which has had a 1 to 1 learning program using Apple notebook computers since 2004.
