Helping Students’ Voices Be Heard

When Lovett first introduced the Writing with Video course in 2005, six students signed up. By the fall of 2007, 180 students filled six full sections of the class; still more were added to a waiting list. In addition to using exciting multimedia technologies to engage her students, Lovett says the Apple tools have helped her empower her students to participate in the teaching and learning process.

“Rather than me being the authority in the classroom,” she notes, “I’ve always preferred to have a much more ‘lateral’ environment, where the instructor is more of a facilitator. I tell my students all the time that I’m not as good with Pages as some of them are. Also, I remind them that they just get to learn from one person, but I learn from 20, so I come out smarter after every semester!”

“When I was growing up, I was never the one who was talking in class all the time,” Lovett finishes. “But with my camera, I have so much to say. The students I teach are all really smart and have a lot to say, too. Many have voices that have been silenced by society at large. With Apple technologies, we’re finally able to access those voices.”
