Apple Unveils World's Fastest Mac OS Server
Workgroup Server 9650/350 Incorporates New 350 MHz 604e PowerPC Processor-based CPU and New Apple Inline Cache
MARKHAM, Ontario--August 8, 1997--Apple Canada Inc. today announced the world's fastest Mac® OS server--the Apple®Workgroup Server 9650/350. Bringing a new level of power, speed, and expandability to customers, the Workgroup Server 9650/350 is the new flagship performance system in Apple's family of successful workgroup servers--the 9650/233 and the 7350/180--delivering advanced functionality to workgroups in education, business, and publishing.
Based on an accelerated next-generation PowerPC 604e processor running at 350 MHz, the Workgroup Server 9650/350 features several design improvements that contribute to the outstanding system performance. Specifically, Apple's new 1MB Inline level 2 cache facilitates higher processor to cache communication and enables the true performance of the PowerPC processor to be realized. A 100MHz bus located between the new Apple® Inline cache and the system's processor facilitates the direct and rapid transfer of information.
According to Stan Ossias, Product Development Manager, Apple Canada Inc., the 9650/350 is one more part of the complete solution Apple is offering to its customers. "Macintosh customers demand powerful technology that is simple to use. The Workgroup Server 9650/350 further addresses this need by offering significant speed and performance improvements derived from the industry's fastest processor and Apple's new Inline Cache technology." Ossias added, "This introduction is another strong step in our overall effort to provide our customers with a complete system--from desktops, to notebooks to displays and servers."
Built for speed, power, and versatility, the Workgroup Server 9650/350 is ideal for workgroups that use both Mac OS and Windows, as well as for customers interested in setting up an intranet that is exceptionally easy to use, support, and maintain. In addition to the 350-megahertz PowerPC 604e processor and new Inline Cache, the 9650/350 features 64MB of RAM (expandable to 768MB); standard dual 4GB (7200 rpm) ultra wide SCSI-3 hard drives that can be striped for better performance or mirrored for redundancy; three SCSI channels--one ultra wide SCSI-3 support for faster hard drive I/O (40MB/s), one internal fast SCSI-2 and one external SCSI-1; 10/100Mb/s ethernet standard and a new 24x speed CD-ROM drive.
Adding Cards, Drives or Memory
The Workgroup Server 9650/233 continues to feature an innovative tower product design that
provides easy access for users adding cards and drives or for servicing the system.
The 9650/350 has six 12-inch PCI 2.0 slots (three of which are open), as well as six internal
drive bays (three of which are open) to maximize storage capacity. The three SCSI channels
in the 9650/350 provide customers with flexibility to utilize a variety of media types.
Bundled Software and Configurations
The Workgroup Server 9650/350 comes bundled with Apple RAID software and Mac OS 7.6.1.
As with all systems in the Workgroup Server family, customers can choose one of three
software solutions to receive the functionality they want--out of the box:
- Application Server Solution:
The Application Server Solution provides a variety of useful Apple and third-party software for workgroup productivity. Customers may choose this option to specifically deploy one of the included client/server solutions or to use this as the foundation for some additional network services such as email or database products that can be purchased separately by the customer. - AppleShare Server Solution:
The AppleShare Server Solution includes all of the software included in the Applications Server Solution, plus the recently introduced AppleShare® IP 5.0 software bundle. AppleShare IP 5.0 follows the AppleShare tradition of ease of use, but adds integrated support for TCP/IP as well as AppleTalk®. This allows the customer to incorporate a Workgroup Server into an organizational intranet easily and seamlessly. AppleShare IP 5.0 also includes several third-party Internet-related tools that allow for better integration of network services into existing network environments, including file, print, http, ftp, and email. - Apple Internet Server Solution:
The Apple® Internet Server Solution provides the software needed to create, manage, and publish media-rich World Wide Web or intranet content quickly and easily across platforms. The Apple Internet Server Solution allows a website to be better integrated with organizational information systems by including software to query many of the popular and industry-standard databases.
The enhanced Workgroup Server 9650/350 is expected to be available in Canada starting in early September, 1997. Estimated retail pricing in Canada is listed below.
