  • Overview

Designed to support professional creative workflows, G-Technology's G-SPEED Studio is a hardware RAID four-bay Thunderbolt 2 storage solution that's configurable in RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10. Thanks to integral Thunderbolt 2 technology, G-SPEED Studio can offer sustained transfer rates of up to 700 MB/sec and the ability to daisy-chain via dual Thunderbolt 2 ports. G-SPEED ships with enterprise-class hard drives and is designed to handle multi-stream compressed 4K and 2K workflows. It also features a sleek black enclosure, smart fan technology and plug-and-play set up with your Mac.

    Thunderbolt 2

Thunderbolt 2 is a revolutionary I/O technology that supports high-resolution displays and high-performance data devices via one simple port and a cable that carries both DisplayPort and PCI Express data. And it’s standard on every Mac.

PCI Express is the technology that links all the high-performance components in a Mac. And it’s built into Thunderbolt, which means you can get PCI Express speed outside the box.

With Thunderbolt 2 now built into the new Mac Pro and MacBook Pro with Retina display, you can connect up to three 4K displays at once. Thunderbolt 2 gives you up to 20 Gbps in both directions, allowing for super-fast data transfer between peripherals. You also have enough bandwidth to daisy-chain multiple high-speed devices without using a hub or switch. Thunderbolt also provides double the power of USB 3.0, delivering 10 watts to peripherals for improved performance on the go.

Smooth 4K Video Playback in Avid Media Composer!!!

For smooth and stutter free playback of 4K video in Avid Media Composer using RAID 5, BUY this drive!!!! The quality of playback is super smooth for viewing and For smooth and stutter free playback of 4K video in Avid Media Composer using RAID 5, BUY this drive!!!! The quality of playback is super smooth for viewing and editing at Full Quality 10bit in Media Composer. For reference: - Video clips were transcoded to DNxHR HQ from 4K clips shot on a Panasonic GH4 - Viewing with Proxy Off After trying out the Promise Pegasus2 4 drive 8TB, 6 drive 18TB, and 8 drive 24TB Promise, none of them every allowed me to play 4K video smoothly and stutter free at Full Quality 10bit in Avid Media Composer. I could only get smooth playback at low quality (yellow box) How is this possible when they are roughly the same price as the G-Techs??!!!! I called G-tech and asked them why would their 4drive 24TB handle video playback sooooo much better then the 6 drive 18TB and 8 drive 24TB from Promise and they said, while the read/write speed for copying/transfering files might be quicker as indicated by the AJA Test below, the G-Tech Studio RAIDs uses "helium-filled" (lower friction) drives rather than the standard "air-filled" in the Promise Pegasus2 models, which allow for better playback access of video material. I would actually call the playback AMAZING!!! totally recommend the G-Tech 24TB to anyone using Media Composer!! for 4K editing :) Full Details of Comparison Results RAID Drives used for testing sequence 4K playback with many edits/cuts: PROMISE Pegasus2 R6 18TB, RAID 5, 6 Drives x 3TB AJA Test Results @ Video Frame Size 4096x2160 10-bit RGB, File Size 4.0 GB: Write: 861.6 MB/s Read: 863.8 MB/s PROMISE Pegasus2 R8 24TB, RAID 5, 6 Drives x 3TB AJA Test Results @ Video Frame Size 4096x2160 10-bit RGB, File Size 4.0 GB: Write: 960 MB/s Read: 1000+ MB/s G-Tech G-Speed Studio 24TB RAID 5, 4 Drives x 6TB AJA Test Results @ Video Frame Size 4096x2160 10-bit RGB, File Size 4.0 GB: Write: 529.1 MB/s Read: 468.5 MB/s The G-Tech playback at: - Best Performance (yellow box): Super Smooth. It felt like watching the smoothness of a DVD or movie at the theater. - Draft Quality (green/yellow box): Looked pretty darn close to the smoothness of Best Performance, too close for me to see a difference in smoothness. - Full Quality 10bit (green box +10bit): Looked VERY SMOOTH!! Yes, no distracting stutters. Maybe just the tiniest bit short of the super smoothness of Best Performance (yellow box). Any lag that is there is the least bit noticeable. To work at this resolution all the time would totally be worth sacrificing the lag, non-factoring lag, compared to Draft or Best Performance. Like I said it's so NOT distracting. - Full Quality (green box): Strangely the playback was the worst of all of them, noticeable lagging! How is this possible when 10 bit playback looked AWESOME?? G-tech told me this is an anomaly. The fact that Full Quality 10bit plays smooth is great, so I just leave my video quality in Full Quality 10bit all the time. The Promise Drive Playback: Playback was distractingly CHOPPY!!! at Full Quality 10bit (green box +10bit) and Full Quality (green box), and would only play smooth at Draft Quality (green/yellow box), and Lowest Quality/Best Performance (yellow box).
