What a cool product and change of pace from the rest of the stuff that's out there. First of all, the packaging is great. The way everything is placed inside of the box is really impressive. Build quality of the mat, cars and charging stations is top-grade. It takes all of 5 minutes to setup and my Iphone found all of the cars right off the bat (I also purchased the other two expansion cars so I have all four). The makers put together a very simple and useful tutorial that demonstrates (while the cars are moving) how to operate everything. After that, myself and my three boys (ages 3, 5, and 8) were on our way to loads of fun. What I like most (so far) about the product is that kids can play for quite some time without having to stop and place a car back on the track when it falls off. The AI takes care of all of that. My 3 year old just likes to race around - shooting occasionally while the 5 and 8 year old battle it out. Putting everything away is very simple. Roll the mat up with the tube it comes with and then put the cars in there "parking garage" in the box. The cars are really cool too. Not flimsy matchbox toys at all. You can tell that a great deal of thought and time went into design and construction. I know this is not a $20 toy and what I spent was close to $400. But like I've always been told and have learned along the way in life...you get what you pay for and this thing is awesome!

    Slot Cars - Evolved

    • Written by from Sacramento

Death Race on your kitchen floor! I wanted this ever since I watched the demo at the Apple Keynote. Finally something I can do better than my 12 year old son. Mom even got in on the action and figured it out pretty quickly. Definitely going to need more than two cars.

This is an amazing achievement in consumer robotics that is unbelievably fun to play. I played it for hours last night not even realizing any time had gone by at all. It goes with out saying this game will bring out the futuristic kid in all of us!

    What a concept!

    • Written by from Elkhart

First, I cannot wait for new features and upgrades, and what they can do with this idea!

It works extremely well. Very fluid, not too complicated for any age. Quick charge times, and decent battery life are a huge plus. These little cars are quick!

I've had it for several hours playing, and it is fantastic.

    Racing mode
    Make more track options.

    The cars look great
The weapons are fun, call it "Couples Therapy"
    Battery life per charge
    Recharge time 5-10 minutes

    Presentation is to Apple standards.

A stunning new hybrid of real world/virtual gaming

    • Written by from Los Alamos

Anki drive is an exceptional new category of game and toy. It combines the best of slot cars, robotics, and video games into an entirely new experience. I invited 3 friends over - all of us in our 40s and 50s - to unbox and setup Anki Drive. I had purchased the 2 additional add-on cars with the hope of 4-car, person to person racing and combat.

Anki drive sets up flawlessly. The box is gorgeous (really, look at the molded inserts and the little packaging details). To play, you download the app, sync your cars (through one, master controller app, I used my iphone 5s), and unroll the vinyl racing surface. The cars charged up quickly (initially took 2-3 minutes; subsequent charges were always less than 10 minutes). It took a few minutes to figure out how to add 4 players (hint: run everything from the master iphone; add all 4 cars through this phone, then have players join your game.)

It's easy enough to setup 4 live players, and once you do, the fun really begins! This is truly a blast to play, and it's awe-dropping when you add the physical racing aspect with real cars on a real race track. The little cars do great. They're surprisingly fast, nimble, and they respond wonderfully to commands to accelerate, slow down, and move to the inside or outside of the track.

With 4 human players, there's a surprising amount of strategy needed to win. Cars occasionally spin out or collide, and very rarely will go off the track. This wasn't a big deal, you just put them back on and off they go. We found battery life on the cars quite good. A full charge lasts for about 3 races, maybe 4 depending (about 20 minutes of game play). Charging is quick, 6-8 minutes. During charging breaks, we talked about the game, strategy, and marveled at the tech behind it all.

Little details in this game are outstanding. The lights on the cars accurately show when you're shooting (from the front) and when you're hit (red lights on the back + vibration of your phone), When someone wins, all the others cars spin out while the winner takes a quick victory lap! Sounds are well synced, too. My favorite effect is the countdown before the race. With 4 human players, all 4 iphones/ipads give the countdown, and the effect is a great, quadrophonic effect with each voice slightly timed to give an expansive effect. Wonderful!

The expandability of this set should be outstanding. New tracks are coming, and as much of the game is in the software, new game modes, upgrades, and strategies are just an update away.

The future for this type of gaming is just wide-open and very exciting. Tank battles anyone? Warhammer with robots? How about a live version of risk, with moving armies? Anki Drive is a bell weather in games, starting a whole new category of real world/virtual hybrids. Highly, highly recommended for the techno-geek gamer in your life.

I just bought the Anki Drive starter kit and I really enjoy the investment I made to purchase this. At first I was worried that I would buy it and might get bored after a few hours but over week later I'm still playing it. The computer is always challenging and the upgrades give you something to work towards other than just playing for fun. All of the people I've managed to get to play it with me have enjoyed it, but I do feel I need to get one or two more cars to really make it interesting. Only downside so far is that there is only one track so far but, I've managed to change it up a bit by adding some inclined planes under the turns to add some variety and new challenge to the game. All in all is definitely worth the money.

    Still needs work

    • Written by from Portland

The first couple of times I ran it, it ran great, but I started to see issues. Around the corners the car was not as smooth. I cleaned the tires and swiftered the track and that helped for a little while but the problem would return. Sometimes the car would go crazy and fly off the track. This is the first iteration of the game, these cars have 2 motors on the back wheels and it uses the track for encoding which is not ideal. If you have 2 independent motors you would want the encoder on the car, sure its small, but with this system, if one wheel is not getting proper traction you get what I'm seeing. I returned mine, I'll wait for version 2. they need encoders or servo steering on the cars.

Can't tell you how much I like Anki! My son and I set up the starter kit in about 10 minutes (had to put the leaf into the dining room table - 9 minutes), charged up the cars, opened the app, and got started. It is so simple!

I think of the cars like 21st century slot cars. Here's why they're better: 1. Track rolls out in 4 seconds (no clipping track parts together hoping they line up; 2. Don't have to plug the track in; 3. Cars actually work first time; 4. Weapons! 5. The cars drive themselves if you want (intro and tutorial are brilliant!) 6. Healthy competition (my son whooped me) 7. Cars are way better quality than anything I owned as a kid (you can just feel it--like Apple products, actually).

You can feel the quality in the packaging, instructions, app--the whole set is very well done. Keeping the track clean may be tougher on the floor, but I had no issues with it on the table. They only fly off occasionally, and you can normally "see" it coming.

Anki is just a brilliant product with TONS of potential and a really bright future.

I love this thing. It takes maybe 5 minutes to setup. It takes 8-10 minutes to charge and you have 20 minutes or driving time. It's truly awesome. I just now need the 2 other cars.

Fantastic. Easy to get going and Fun.

OK, I am fanboy for this product. I was so excited to get it after first hearing about it.

It was exactly what I expected.

I purchased the product on the first day and started playing with my wife that evening. The kids love it.

I do recommend getting four cars. (two additional). It is more fun with more cars. You can get up and running right away, but practice does actually make you better.

You need an 'i device' (ipod touch, iphone, or ipad) for each car IFF you want all four cars to be controlled by people. The ones for which you don't have a a controller will just be robots. That is all fun.

You do dust off the track and the car wheels. That is the extent of the maintenance that we have done leaving the track out on the floor.

We expect a center of (geekdom) partying over the upcoming gatherings.

    Fun for the Family

    • Written by from Lakeview

We purchased the Anki Drive the day it came out, we have a 5 and 3 year old. The whole family enjoys these races! The shipping and storage containers are top notch, so quick to just wrap up. We have been so impressed we have purchased the additional 2 cars, and are waiting patiently for the arrival of CORAX. Our 3 year old has decent control over them, and the 5 year old can race with us. I recommend the Anki Drive for all ages! Have fun!

Some of the one star reviews say the cars come off the track, race is coming etc. Race mode is now avalible and the track needs to be flat and cleaned to prevent cars coming off the track. I liked it and it is worth the $200

I was skeptical at first, but I LOVE IT!

    • Written by from Prior Lake

At first, when Borris got up on stage at the Keynote and talked about his first product Anki Drive. I honestly did not know what that meant, how was this gonna help, what was this gonna do? Would this be fun? Would this hype run out after we played a few times. Well, friends, this is a keeper.

I play this all the time. I take it to parties and get the whole house watching as I show it off. This is something everyone is interested in when explained well. You need to understand what you are getting for $200. The ability you have and the inspiration it could spark. Imagine if your kid plays Anki Drive and decides he or she wants to be a software engineer and make Apps or products like this someday. Now, you have inspired them, and what that can do for them, let alone the WORLD is huge. There are so many more things to this product, to this company besides a vinyl mat, and fancy robot cars. They care about the customer, and they care about making a difference in the world. Anki Drive is just the beginning. I cannot wait to see whats next.

As always, I only recommend buying from an authorized seller such as Apple or Anki themselves to ensure you get the real thing and not some knock off from someone other than Anki.
