AirPlay and Spotify brought me out of the Stone Age

I've been a bit of a Luddite when it comes to music streaming -- didn't understand the benefits of Spotify and thought my Beocenter 2 from about 2002 was still state of the art. I was actually still buying music CD's!

Story is too long to re-tell but bottom line is that I discovered that I could stream music, using Airport Express, to my existing B&O system. How cool!

Bought the Express and had streaming with Spotify up and running in five minutes flat (no BS). It works perfectly and, with Spotify, I have unbelievable access to any/all music on the planet!

So for $100 I've brought my mega-buck, but obsolete, stereo system into the 21st century and have a whole new perspective on music -- what I listen to, how I access it, everything! It really is revolutionary -- AirPlay and Spotify. (I suppose Apple Music is similar)

If anyone is looking to buy a bunch of old CD's I have several hundred...

PS Reason I gave only 4 stars is that I haven't explored the other capabilities of the Express yet.

Great but be aware of wireless printing gotcha with iOS devices

Bought this and an Airport Extreme to set up a fast and then extended network. Setting up the wireless network was painless and adding the Express extension was equally so. Config is a breeze. Performance of new network is better and the Extreme certainly has much better range in the house vs an earlier generation 'n' class wireless AP. Plugging in a printer was straightforward too and works great with my MacBooks.

BUT... Airport Express DOES NOT give you AIRPRINT with iOS devices. It's confusing. Airport with wireless printing is not the same as AirPrinting. Macs have printer drivers iOS don't so simply will not work. You need an Airport capable printer; which I've just ordered! My the old printer was on it's last legs so it's not so bad and I needed to fix the wifi. But if you think an Airport Express / Extreme will give you an easy route to wireless printing with your phone or iPad - it won't. Hope that tip helps.

(One star off for the confusion this caused me and it seems, judging from the web, may others. As a wireless router - 5 stars.)

works, simple to set up, some limitations

I have 6 of these for multi-zone audio streaming connected to an Airport Extreme base station, and many other wifi devices on the network, including 4 wifi-connected HD security cameras. It works great (almost always) to stream.

The issues I have had are as follows: 1) The software will only allow streaming to one at a time from an iPhone, but from my Macbook Pro, I can stream to all of them or any subset. 2) the streaming audio does become intermittent if I do some heavy downloading over wifi at the same time, so I have learned to avoid this. For example, I update all of my apps in iTunes before trying to stream audio so it doesn't try to do both at the same time. 3) It is slow to connect a device through one when they are used to extend a network. I use only one of them to extend the network to get a good signal on my back patio, but make sure that all of my home devices otherwise connect directly to the Airport Extreme.

Generally, they are great, but need updating.

    AirPort Express (APE)

My APE(AirPort Express) is a mini wonder, efficient, classy and petite.

Being a networking student, seeing the APE is really amazing. Compared to other wireless routers, its 65% smaller, saves space and is way more efficient, using roughly 0.3A(on product).
It has no lanky antennas and you have to really see it to understand its size and power.
Its also awesome with the speaker port + usb for printer.

Only sacrifice for myself is that, it would be nice if it had gigabit LAN. The Extreme was too extreme for me, and the Express is really the right size for any home(HDB) of Singapore.

Overall, I in LOVE my new APE.
