I have mixed emotions about this. It does my backups just fine but as a WiFi router my old sysco router runs circles around this. Since I've hooked this up streaming movies on my TV from other apps it won't show them in HD due to bandwidth. Either that or it just buffers constantly. I never had these issues with my old router. I guess if it isn't broke. Don't try and fix it. I wanted to love this but it frustrates me in times where I really want it to work.

    All-in-one hard to use

I bought this AirPort Time Capsule back in 3 August, and it took me almost 18 hours of tinkering before it finally works. It has good wifi, but it keeps losing my backups every 2 weeks or so even if the backup drive isn't full. And I am always scared that it is overheating (how long will it last in this condition?). The good thing is that now my iOS devices can finally AirPrint using my non-AirPrint HP printer.

Great until it died 4 months later

Best router and backup - couldn't have been happier! Then, it died in just 4 months. Power light went out and that was it... Not sure what is going on with apple quality, but I also bought a mac book pro that had to be returned due to a known video card issue... :(
I'll get another most likely, but not counting on this for my only backup!

    Not really good enough

I gave this three stars but it really should be two, this works as a time capsule straight from the box, but thats it, as a wireless setup, its not very good, if Im not in the same room I cant get enough signal for my Mac Book Pro to pick it up, i wanted to use it to store all my music and photos but haven't discovered how to do that yet, it will mean I will have to be in the same room to do anything with them when I do. The Apple shop in Norwich told me I have to remove the BT router when using this but they don't know what they are talking about, it has to be wired in after the router or you don't get any internet!!

Great speed and functionality however decreased range

I bought the ATC mainly for the additional backup and was pleased to see that it boasts good range, speed along with the 2tb of available backup. Works great have been able to access TC with all machines and the wireless speed is up on my previous router however we live in a double brick apartment and the range compared to my old Dlink DIR618 is questionable. I have needed to add an AP Express as an extender so we are able to get access in the bedrooms of the apartment.

Overall great product but disappointed that the range is not up to what is advertised.

    Apple removed SNMP

I recently purchased one of these to replace my Airport Extreme that finally died. I was in a rush, going on out of town the next day for two weeks, so I didn't enough time to research it. For some reason Apple chose to remove SNMP which means I can no long monitor the device. Had I known this I would have purchased something else. Everything works fine so no complaint other then I am unable to monitor the device.

Excellent router. Good backup storage. Poor file sharing.

I've bought it 2 months ago.
    Flawless installation/configuration.
Reliable and fast as a router.
Good a storage for TimeMachine for my Mac Mini (ethernet) and MacBook Pro (WiFi).

However file sharing is disappointing due to too aggressive spin down time. Disk goes to sleep in less than 30 seconds after last access! Streaming media from it may lead to 'funny' pauses in playback if your player buffers more than few seconds. Streaming stuff to Macs can be painful. Streaming anything to PC is just pointless. And no 'spin down time' option in configuration :(

It also reported bogus (hopefully) problems with the hard drive. After restart it's green again.

Considering all that I've decided to buy proper NAS solution, leaving Capsule as backup-only device with no file sharing at all.

Terrible Packaging!!! *Open with extreme care...*

I read a review about the packaging being not very well designed but I didn't think about it when I received and opened the box for my new Time Capsule.

I opened the box carefully whilst standing up above my desk and it required some effort as a result of some air pressure I guess... then when it gave way the Time Capsule falls (more like jumped!) out and hit the desk...

Took a chip out of my work desk and scuffed the corner.... why on earth they made packaging like this I've no idea... complete FAIL by someone or many people at Apple here.... part of the buzz of buying an Apple product from Apple is the experience of opening the box for the first time.

Big big let down.... I could call to complain but I doubt anything would come of it and I'm pretty sure they won't accept any liability.... for the chip in my desk now.

Beside's why would I want to or why should I have to complain to my favourite computer company... a bit gutted....

My suggestion and what should be Apple's clear recommendation is to open the box upside down with the top firmly on the desk or flat surface... this is pretty much the only way you can avoid it falling out. Only fell 20 cm but that was enough to chip my desk.

Just got my new Time Capsule

I outgrew my old Time Capsule so time for a new one. I bought the 2GB version and overall the set up was in true Apple style, dummy proof. Things were up and running in a matter of minutes. What I don't like is that it does not provide any configuration settings that will allow you to monitor internet traffic. Great router, very strong signals throughout the house. If it had some advance settings I'd be more generous with my ratings.

Does not offer advanced settings such as SNMP Config...

Product works well enough, but does not provide advance settings which is a problem if you want to use a tool like NetUse to monitor your routers internet traffic. I know that I can revert back to using Airport Utility 5.6 to be able to config SNMP but shouldn't have to. Re-introduce advanced configuration settings to this product and I will happily give it 5 stars.

Guest networking feature does not work with Sky broadband

Just got a new (July 2013) 3TB Time Capsule. As with my previous TC the guest network feature only works when it is set-up in router mode (as a DHCP and NAT server). Unfortunately the only way to get the TC to work with a Sky broadband router is to operate it in bridge mode (DHCP and NAT off) as otherwise you get a "Double NAT" error (even with DHCP off on the Sky router). This means the guest network is not possible with Sky broadband.

Otherwise it seems pretty good. Shame Apple haven't made the guest network feature more usable, and shame they don't tell you that it only works with some broadband connections.

I'm surprised that no one has criticised the fact there is 1x USB2.0, could of been 3.0, and/or even also firewire.
Additionally, there is a minimum of LAN ports available here- more please.
Apart from the new AC technology, and antennas, there seems to be very little incentive to purchase.
Seems like a fashion product with the new shape- in vogue for a short period.

    Useful as a wireless router.

The 5GHz wireless performance of this model is considerably improved over prior models. A minor complaint is that the orientation of the ethernet sockets should have been rotated by 90 degrees. It is rather difficult to disengage the clip that locks the ethernet plugs in place. Access to the internal disk drive is very slow and its usefulness as network attached storage is limited. It took about a minute to transfer 1GB to the time capsule using a wired connection. This is a rate of about 16MB/second.

    Better range, but drops clients

This new TC definitely has better range and wifi performance, even in the 2.4GHz band.

However, it drops inactive clients after some time period. If I don't use my iPad overnight, in the morning it shows a strong wifi signal, but the TC doesn't show it as a client (verified by checking with Airport Utility on Mac).

I have to cycle the wifi on/off on the iPad to reestablish a connection.

Shared USB external Hard Drive can't be backed up using Time machine

Disappointed that the Shared external USB Hard Drive can't be backed up using Time machine, little backwards here i think especially at this price point, this was one of the main reasons i bought the Capsule, i foolishly expected this facility. Don't expect Guest network to work in all cases. Appart from that it's ok.

    All in One

I am very happy that Apple developed a unit that is both a router and external storage device. This serves two purposes. The familiar "Time Machine" is now harmoniously united with this new "Time Capsule" syncing and backup is seamless and practical.

Speed is only enhanced by a device that supports the new "AC" bandwidth. Either way, even with b/g/n you will notice an improvement.

The only critique I must include is the inability to remotely access files or media from storage. There are currently no method to stream and access such data via IOS AP or any third party portal.

In conclusion, if you like a device that is both storage and router, in one. This is the best product available.
