    Not ready for prime time

It works well when it works, but almost daily, often more than once a day, the time machine fails with a variety of error messages: disk not available, not enough space on the disk, changed identity (what could that mean?), or just "failed".

It's WAY too much trouble for the price.

    Time Capsule disappointing

I purchased a new Airport Time Capsule, and it was relatively easy to set up. It completed a first backup on one computer. So far so good. The next day, I tried to set up a second computer for backup, but the backup disk could not be accessed. Got the message "internal drive needs repair". Having the backup disk crash after just one day of use is unsettling. I now have very little faith in this product as a backup option.

This rating is for the Apple Airport extreme

I decided to buy the Apple Airport extreme instead of the Time Capsule because I wanted to add my own high-quality hard drive.
2Tb Samsung's are awesome factory OEM not the newer drives which are actually manufactured by Seagate but branded under the Samsung name
I am happy with the performance of the AirPort Extreme. The router speed is good and the backup works very well with my Time Machine plus I can share data stored on the back up drive with my macs iPhone iPad (using GoodReader) and PC clients

    worst apple product

....two hours of trying and the airport time capsule I bought just won't connect, sadly the instructions that where supplied where just so vague it was laughable, while I like apple products, this has to be the worst experience I have had with an apple product, sadly its going back to the shop

    Frustrating

So disappointed. Yes it works great as a backup storage. Yes it has great connectivity. Wanted both backup and to be able to move files over to as well. Could have bought another brand 2T wifi hard drive for less money that would allow me to back up AND store files. Why does apple make some things so difficult? Just like you cannot move photos to iCloud. People really want to save their photos in other places beside a flash drive and or on laptops.

    Digital Saver!!

I love this router. My signal has become more stable and stronger. I now have access to my Wi-Fi everywhere in the house. The time capsule is working seamlessly and I couldn't be happier. Is it expensive? Yes however the payoff has been well worth it.

    Glorified Hard Drive

I bought one last week was a hassle to setup, after resetting it about 5 times, powering router on and off and Macbook air as well as searching forums and emailing Apple... it finally worked. I really bought it to store masses of Films and music mostly bought from iTunes so that could stream them rather than relying on my Broadband and iCloud. However it cannot stream easily to Apple TV and every time I restart / power up iTunes changes the location of my library back to the defult it then asks do I want to reorganise etc.. and takes a further two of three minutes to update my library ... this is every time I restart or power up even though the device is constantly on. Kind of defeats the whole purpose I bought it for making it a glorified over priced hard drive.

Incredible, I don't get the bad reviews at all!

I was surprised to see so many people writing bad reviews about things as silly as not liking the packaging! I bought one anyway trusting apple like I have been for the last 10 years, and I have not been let down! My previous router was putting out 35-40mbs when I was supposed to be getting 100. After only 5 minutes of setting up (literally) I was running at 115 mbs right away. Other people have complained that it took hours for their backup...The setup manual specifically states that due to the very large amount of data being backed up during the first initial backup you should connect via ethernet. I was going to sleep anyways so I didn't bother, but for those of you who don't want to wait 6-8 hours for your first backup (mine was 1/2 a terabit) then you should plug it in. All backups since have only taken a few minutes and I don't even notice they are happening.

Great product! We have several in the family

We have 3 time capsules and an airport extreme in the family. We are very pleased. They are easy to set up, the mac & iPhone interface is great, and it's a seamless backup solution. We use the usb port to share our printer on the network as well as occasionally archive our time capsule drive. Our oldest time capsule suffered a drive failure and replacing the drive was easy. The kids' time capsules are set up as network extenders at home and routers when they go away. We wouldn't hesitate to buy it again- great product.

    Perfect for Automated Backups

Few people back up their precious data, but with an Airport Time Capsule my Mac backs itself up wirelessly and automatically every hour. Once I set up the Time Machine software it's just set and forget. Worth every dollar. Would be more valuable with USB 3 (for external drives) and Solid State Drive. Would give it 5 starts with USB 3 and SSD.

    Awesome time capsule

I was scared to death when my iMac was stolen (house break-in) and it was time to see if the Airport Time Capsule had indeed captured all my data. It worked!!!! even my desktop information was there. The folks at Applecare guided me through the restoration (which was simple) I would recommend this product without a doubt. It is also your wi-fi. To connect the wi-fi, they had me disconnect from my cable provider and the wi-fi comes through the capsule. (I simply called the cable company and they were familiar with the process and disconnected it).

    Love the router. 4.75 rating.

Router works well, stores and backs up automatically, signal is strong upstairs and down, easy set up and good connection.

Love the Extreme Airport Time Capsule. My only wish is there was a way to store all my CD's to it and playback over AirPlay without going through iTunes Match. May have to break down on that one though. Storing and playback would have given it a full 5 stars in my book, but its about 4.75 without it.

    AirPort Time Capsule is brilliant

Bought a 2TB capsule to fulfill 2 objectives:- as a router to replace my BT Home Hub and to act as an external hard drive for backing up. Fully meets the objectives and whilst you could say it should do at the price, the set up was easy and speed / performance is brilliant. Well done Apple - another brilliant product that exactly meets my needs.

    Triumph of style over substance

Attracted by the promise of wireless back-ups (as I forget to do them manually) and the ability to extend the network on 5Ghz to support a new 'smart' TV (which it turns out isn't so smart, but thats not Apple's problem).

Out of the box, easily set-up and initial back-up completed… looking good. Hang on, not much improvement on the 5Ghz network though, maybe it'll pick up. 7hrs later and uh-oh… Time capsule is over heating, fan running full speed and hot to the touch. Un-plugged and allowed to cool, fired back up and now its cool to the touch but fan running and airport utility stating that its overheating. However I do now have a 5Ghz boost!

Following day, plug it back in and its overheating straight away with the fan running constantly, hours later and its still the same. Firmware updated, no difference. Next day it runs fine ( must have been because I logged the call to Apple support)… until its been on for 7hrs, and again its overheating (cool to the touch). Apple tech re-sets the unit, fan running but all okay in airport utility.

Clearly some sort of software glitch that isn't monitoring the temperature properly and switching the fan on/off accordingly. Interestingly the old version time capsule (flat square one) is hotter to the touch than this new one.

Only advice was to 'see how it goes' for a few days… I don't think so Apple, not prepared to trust my back-ups to a device that doesn't know if its overheating or not. Replacement is now in the post, hopefully the 2nd one is better!

Apple Support for setup issues is outstanding

I bought the 2TB Time Capsule to replace an original Time Capsule that was maxed out. Plugged everything in and could not get the internet to come back up. I called our ISP (Cox Cable) and they were able to get my internet back up going directly from the cable modem to my iMac. But that bypassed the Time Capsule and therefore no WIFI. When I then routed the cable modem back to the Time Capsule, again no internet. I messed around with it a while and finally asked for support from Apple on the web site. Got a call back from them in half a minute, and within 5 minutes they walked me through the DHCP settings on the Time Machine to get it right. It's been great since then. Kudos to Apple for outstanding customer support and a great product!

    superb product

I bought one of these about a month ago on powering it up it downloaded the latest firmware, I tailored it to replace my ISP router's wifi as it is useless. At first it did not give a great coverage, until `i turned off the wifi on the ISP's router which then the wifi service improved 100%. I also made the wifi SSID very simple with a more powerful password since then the WIFI and TC has been powered up all the time with backups from both my macs to it no problem. `i have since removed the back up of my desktop to a separate USB connected hard drive, because for a desktop this is a better option. A second hard drive is used to keep all my movies as a hard drive, I am able to stream 3d from my Air to TV using this as a source, with no buffering problems, first class product, People forget that WIFI is not a guaranteed speed all the time, but I am delighted.

    I should have known better

After trying to purchase a couple of lowered priced devices (router and extender), I decided that I would buy a time capsule and give it a shot after reading a lot of positive reviews. Let's just say that not only I am happy but my daughters are happy too. We have great coverage and speed throughout the house. Devices include iMac, Macbook, two iPod touches, three iPads and two Apple TV's. Great product and I highly recommend, next step is set up time machine,

    Ok - but glacially slow

Installation and setup is a piece of cake.
However, running backups are glacially and annoyingly slow. Wish I bought a device I can simply plug directly into the Mac and backup from there.
Also, the device hangs up regularly and needs to be restarted.
Maybe mine is just a Monday's machine, but wouldn't buy it again.

Died after a year, just after warranty expired

I should have learnt my lesson with my first time capsule in grad school which was finicky and crashed once every 4-5 months. It lasted me through 4 years before dying, so when I got a new job, I conveniently forgot how terrible the device was in light of automatic backups.

However I'm really annoyed that just shy of 12 months, the device crashed and no matter how much I reset it, it won't even show up on my computer. $300 wasted!

    Great product

This is a great product. The ad wireless is faster, but my network provider is slow so I can't fully enjoy it. N wifi is also noticbly faster though. It is good for backing up your mac but I wish you could handle the backups easier because time machine sometimes gets confusing. Otherwise, I would recommend this product highly.
