    Surprisingly weak Guest Network security

The Airport Extreme is a high-performance WiFi router, but it has a surprising weakness in the Guest Network: ZERO support for any form of client Wireless/AP isolation mode. For any public setting, like a library, coffee shop, retail store, this means that any wireless device that connects to the Guest Network can see all the other devices on the Guest Network, including the manufacturer of the device, address, and other features.

The lack of client Wireless/AP isolation mode is a surprising security weakness in an Apple product -- especially because many competitors support "Wireless Client Isolation" in product that cost less than half the price of the Airport Extreme.

I bought an Airport Extreme for use in a public art gallery, but it's being returned to Apple due to this surprising and disappointing security weakness.

    Incompatible with Surfboard Modems

After several hours and calls to Comcast I'm done with this router. Won't connect with modem and when it does its intermittent connection and won't work with other devices. I'm a big fan of Apple products but this one is a piece of junk.

    Blazing fast!!

I have been using Comcast as my ISP and was using router provided by it until now. However despite a good internet package I was never able to get stable and decent internet speeds. After fair amount of research I decided to invest in AirPort Extreme. There are many routers I considered before going for Extreme and the primary reasons were ease of setup, security, speed and of course the looks. I have to agree AirPort Extreme has all the qualities as mentioned on the company's website but the quality which stands out the most is the stable and blazing fast connection it provides. The only hiccup I had while setting it up was related to the Comcast router where I had to call the customer support to disable the wifi on the existing router, otherwise the setup was a breeze. Many would argue that there are better routers which provide more functions and customization but how many of us actually need those functions. I wanted a hassle free router and that's exactly what AirPort Extreme is all about.

Love the idea, but not the product

I bought this shortly after it was released because it uses ac wifi and I found earlier AirPort Extremes to be easy to set up and manage. In general it works really well for my wired devices. However, I typically lose wifi connectivity at least three times per week.

Though I have found a solution on the community boards that lets me reset the wifi without having to unplug the router, I still find it frustrating to lose wifi so frequently.

On a computer I go into AirPort Utility > Edit > Wireless > Wireless Options then I change the Wireless Channels. This solution was presented as a way to make sure you are not using the same wireless channels as any nearby wireless routers. I went through the more detailed process of assessing nearby wifi channels in use and was hopeful this would be a long-term solution. However, I still lose wifi several times each week so I don't bother checking the nearby router channels anymore and just assign new channels. I would really like to get a more permanent solution though.

Other than that (very frustrating) item, I really like this router. It is easy to set up and manage. I have it connected to a switch for my wired devices and they never have a connection issue.

    Works great

Another 5 star review. Mine is a refurbished unit and worked great. It appeared new as any product, with the plastic cling wrap and typical packaging. This replaced my previously rented B/G wireless router from Verizon, which worked fine but lacked N and AC speeds. My new ISP (Charter) would provide a wireless access point but they charge $5 a month, so I was using the Verizon unit. The Airport Extreme connected to the Charter provided router and worked perfect out of the box. Mine does not have the hard drive (don't think I need it) so I can't comment there. I run a Roku 4, an iPad Air, iPhone 6, and my PC is on wireless as well and all connect and run at provided speeds - about 65 Mb/s down and 5 up. The furthest point I use the equipment is roughly 50 feet and the signal is strong through a standard wood frame single story. The $5 I save per month pays the refurbished unit off in about 2 years and I think is well worth it vs the rented unit. The refurb is a excellent value and offers the same warranty as a new one, so if you have the opportunity to get one, it's a good deal.

Broke After 16 Months - Not Covered by Apple

This router looks and works great, but is unreliable (filter on the one-star reviews to see what I mean). Apple will not replace even though the device is four months out of warranty. I am very disappointed especially considering the high price of these units. My advice to owners of Airport Extremes that are still in warranty: return the Airport Extreme as soon as you hear a fan noise -- I waited too long.

    Very DISAPPOINTING!

I've had the AirPort Extreme for only 3 days and the so-called increased download speed improvement is just not was it is advertised as. I am very disappointed to pay so much (I have the iPad retina display, iPhone6, and an iMac that's only 1 year old) and not get what was advertised. Unlike some of the other folks who have commented, I have no intention of buying a 2nd one...in fact I want a refund! The download speed is the same and I have experienced nothing different except in my bank account. This puts a new light on Apple products for me. Don't waste your money for this product.

Worked great until it died - second one to die around 1.5 yrs of use

I am NOT a computer expert, compared to many of the reviewers, but I found the router and time capsule to be easy to setup and was very happy with the data streaming rate. In fact, the product worked great - until it died. After about 18 months, our first Airport Extreme died, so with Apple Care, we received a new one. Unfortunately, that one died as well around 18 months.

In the first instance, we had a power outage that somewhat trashed the Airport, even though it was on a protected power strip. The second time it was simply unplugged and then never recovered. It hums, like the first, but it unable to switch on (light is dead).

I'm sure there was some method by which I was supposed to unplug it (lock the drive, etc.), but that it cannot even communicate with our Mac via ethernet nor will start back up seems pretty extreme.

We just switched to using our UVerse router with a NetGear extender, and a very affordable WD backup HDD.

    2nd AirPort that sucked

Sadly this is my 2nd Airport extreme and I had the older version too. Sadly they look nice! but your better of with a NetGear for 50$$. Issues I had the HD crashed on my order model. The new Airport Extreme the single drops. this is the replacement I'm having issues with. But now I don't have warranty.

    AirPort Extreme Not Apple Perfected

After about 18 months of great performance the wireless router will not stay connected. The old Apple Express router that it replaced still works like a champ, albeit slower. This is not a great value if it must be replaced every couple of years. I expect more from Apple equipment.

    Extending network

While our house is not that big, the primary Airport Extreme signal was intermitant at the other end and up stairs. The signal was not consistant because of a 24" stone wall in the middle of the house.
Got a second Extreme since I figured it would be most compatible and easier to hook up.
Very good idea.....to get the network set up and the two talking......took less than a minute.......max strength signal now upstairs!!

This product needs to be FIXED!

The Airport Extreme goes off to LA LA land. It has a green light and looks normal but devices on wi-fi or wired will not go onto the internet. This happens when devices have been connected a while or overnight. As an example my iPhone will be connected and working on Wi-Fi and then the next morning I have to turn off and back on Wi-Fi on the phone to use the internet. Very frustrating.
My older Airport Extreme works great. I upgraded with hopes of a stronger signal to reach my garage. FAIL.

I am hoping Apple will release an update to fix this issue.

    Airport Extreme - Limited Range

I replaced a Time Capsule (5 years old) that worked pretty good but thought I go for a more up to date product. The range on this is not good and much worse than a Time Capsule. From Home Office to Family Room (50 feet) it is very slow. Laptop wi-fi poor and hardly streams a movie. I had to move to the Family Room...problem solved. I'm very disappointed.

    I echo everything said here.

I was so excited to add AirPort Extreme as a new router and use my older Airport Express as an extender. I was able to get the New AE connected properly once. As I tried to add the older Airport Express to extend the connection AND have access to AirPlay which the Extreme does not support I lost the connection and it never worked again. talked to Xfinity and read multiple articles. It will not talk to the modem. I invested close to five hours on this. Will move on and search a different option. It's going back to Apple next week.

    Disappointing, aggravating, unreliable

I've been a HUGE Apple fan for over twenty years. The latest Airport Extreme, unfortunately, has been nothing but a huge source of frustration. Have spent long hours on phone with tech support, weekly resets/restarts/reboots.........etc....etc.....Wifi reliability has been an ongoing issue that Apple has failed to acknowledge or address. Check the Apple forums if you need further evidence.
For now, I've switched to a Motorola/Arris product, which is yet to have issue. Am hopeful that Apple can correct their wifi woes at some point, but am not holding my breath.

    Best Router I've used

I own quite a few Apple products so far (Apple TV, MacBooks, iMac, IPhones) and this is one of the best apple products. I was having trouble with my modem and router from Time Warner. It kept disconnecting ever time my iMac went to sleep and would disconnect from my Apple TV. I finally bought this and a different modem. The set up was easy, less than 5 minutes. My computer hasn't disconnected and it's been faster than ever. Worth the investment!

Extremely fast, USB connection is BS

What do you expect, the rating is 802.11ac. This router is naturally fast. The sad thing is, Apple upgraded the antennas and stuff to 802.11ac, but forgot to upgrade the USB port on the router, which is a huge bummer. If the USB port was 3.0, things would run a lot faster when using a shared disk, but apple says no. USB 2.0 is still present on this base station and using the shared disk is very slow and gimmicky. It takes a whopping 5 DAYS to transfer 2 GB of pictures onto the shared disk. If I directly plug the disk into my Mac it would take only a single minute. APPLE SERIOUSLY YOU ARE KILLING SO MANY USEFUL POSSIBILITIES WITH A SINGLE USB PORT! Upgrade it please!

    Great buy

I upgraded my old Airport Extreme to Apple Time Capsule that didn't work, so I bought the new Airport Extreme which was wonderful but decided to get back to Time Capsule and give it another try and it worked beautifully. They are essentially the same product, the difference is of course the wireless HDD on the time capsule. Both work very well as routers, very fast and reliable. True, they have a history of trouble but I hope Apple has worked out the glitches. Very satisfied.
