Product description incomplete re USB port

    • Written by from Key West

The web router works very well.

However, the USB port does not. (1) it requires an external hard drive with its own power source - NOT SPECIFIED. (2) it requires an external hard drive formatted in a particular way - NOT SPECIFIED.

Apple is working with me to overcome these problems.

They sent me a 4-hub device that doesn't do what they said it would.

Now they are sending me an external hard drive so I can re-format my data without having to wipe out all files on my current external hard drive.

Lots of trouble & time for me, plus expense to Apple.

    Works great but...

Pretty fast it has stronger connection than the airport extreme (N) but i don't know how long mine will last because of the the packaging i dropped mine on the floor so that may have shortened the life of this $200 marvel. I don't know what genius thought of this packing but all i have to say is we miss you STEVE JOBS :(

    SNMP function No longer there

    • Written by from Bruxelles

Apple stop support for SNMP function. If you want to monitor new AirPort Extreme Base Station by SNMP, you are out of luck.

and Apple, Please mention this fact on your product Information.

    Excellent router!! A definite BUY!!

    • Written by from Sherman Oaks

I have a single story 2500 sq foot house with a separate detached living area (built off the garage), so there's a wide area of coverage needed with older thick walls. We area an apple family - with a dozen clients (iMacs, Mac Books, iPhones, iPads, Apple TVs, PS3, etc.) needing wifi coverage. (I was also using a new Airport Express to extend my network into the detached loft).

I had upgraded to Time Warner's Ultimate Internet service (50 Mbps), but I was only getting the high speed on an iMac that was physically connected to my old Airport router via ethernet. I was having to reboot my router more than once a day to get the speeds to pick up from horrible to simply passable - Netflix movies would stop streaming - kids were screaming - it wasn't pretty.

I researched all the new high end AC1900 routers (Netgear Nighthawk R7000, Asus RT-AC68U), and I have to admit I was tempted to finally drop my long term reliance on Apple Airport products. Then I remembered that the Apple Airport had always been so easy to use and I don't need to break into my router to configure it in any non-standard way, so after reading some decent reviews - I went back to my Apple roots and bought the new Airport Extreme (w/AC).

I don't have any AC clients yet, but I can say this: I was able to swap out the router and have a new network up and running in less than 60 seconds flat. I used the old network name and every device automatically reconnected to the network without having to do anything.

I am now getting 50 Mbps on my Mac Book Pro (n) - when previously I had only been getting 5 Mbps! The increased range is incredible too - reaching full strength everywhere now where it hadn't before.

Conclusion - if you're a multiple Apple user like me and have an existing airport that's causing your internet to become sluggish - and your family's patience at it's limits - stop reading about all those other routers and buy this one.

    Best of the best

    • Written by from danbury

Apple released this very well in time when my Linksys E4200 died on me, i thought that was the best router, this is my first apple router and its easy to setup, wide range, better speed and airport utility app compliment everything, if you are serious about your home of work network then don give any second thought, quality never comes cheap.

    Best thing since sliced bread

    • Written by from Toronto

We had a 2007 AE and were getting increasingly frustrated with it - lack of range in the 5GHz mode, cutting out when the microwave was used in the 2.4GHz mode (and even on the 2.4GHz band it only barely reached the far corners of the house and not strongly). It wasn't simultaneous dual band, so we had to choose one evil or the other. So, I bit the bullet and bought the new AE and WOW - am I ever glad I did! Our transmit rate is now about 4-5X what it was in any given location and things are generally zippier all round. No more interference from the microwave, either. The older devices work, the newer ones are as fast as can be and the range is wonderful. All good!

Increased Coverage in My Home, and Improved Video Streaming

    • Written by from Austin

Purchased this unit to replace my 4th generation Airport Extreme. I'm impressed by the increased range in my home. I have this unit placed in my second floor office, and I get increased signal strength as shown in the settings on my Apple TV on the first floor vs. my prior router. I also love the smaller footprint design which takes up less space. And best part of all is the easy setup (can even do it from my iPhone or iPad) using the Airport Utility. Like all Apple products I own, great design, build quality, and hassle-free setup.

    Pretty but that's about it.

    • Written by from Cobourg

I bought this router because it was "server grade" and "the best I could get". Fast setup which is really the only positive. Other than that slow speeds compared to my 3 year old Cisco router which beat it in every speed comparison. So back to the shop it went. I'll buy something more suitable for all wireless products not one that just favours apple products. Oh and if you have a ps3 or xbox. Look elsewhere not very compatible.

This replaced my old linksys router. All I can say is WOW! This is leaps and bounds ahead of any other router I've ever used. I actually get 1mb more than I pay for with this router! Being able to set up a guest network is a nice feature also.

    Another Amazing Apple Product!

    • Written by from Milford

I previously had the 4th Generation Airport Extreme (which was just fine), but I upgraded to this new and redesigned 6th Generation Airport Extreme. The speeds are about the same as my old one (60 download / 10 upload), but I have greater range throughout my whole house (even outside, in my garage, front yard and back yard). Setup was very simple and I like the smaller footprint. Thanks Apple.

    Fantastic AEBS Comcast user !!!!!

    • Written by from Fort myers

i purchased the latest september 2013 model Airport extreme base station and wow setup was super easy on the iMac!! The quality is outstanding the only issue was i had a comcast modem/router that interfered so i called comcast customer service to have the router switched off (which can only be done by phone)!! and i must say Download speeds are at 56mbps and uploads are 15mbps. My PS3 is super fast now:))

It really is a must buy !! The negative reviews seem to be because they arent very tech smart or their other equipment is faulty modem, computer etc.... not the actual AEBS!

When i looked for a router it was tough because there is so many but im sooooo glad i bought this.

Range is only alright, box is terribly designed

    • Written by from Holland Patent

Careful when you open this thing, I nearly dropped it. It really is an awful packaging design. The range really isn't that great. I upgraded from my dual band netgear 802.11n router and the range seems a little bit worse to be honest. I don't have 802.11ac devices yet though, waiting for the refreshed retina macbooks. I am still disappointed with the range, especially since the new iphones dont even have 802.11ac. can't use my phone in my bedroom and i definitely could with my old router. i regret this purchase.

This has got to be the easiest setup I have ever encountered with a router. It took me longer to route the power cable then it did for me to set up the network. It was quick and easy with the AirPort Utility App on my MacBook Pro and all of my wireless equipment connected immediately.

This signal strength throughout my house has seen a huge increase. I am just amazed and completely happy with my new AirPort Extreme!!!!!

If you are in the market for a new AC compliant router I strongly recommend this product. I know it is a bit pricy but similar products from other manufacturers cost just as much.

Upgraded from Gen4 Airport Extreme. Range is much better and set up with just as easy as normal. Speeds are better on iPad2 and iPhone 4S and excellent on iPhone 5S. I would definitely recommend this to a friend!

    'One-Stop-Shop' Top Quality Router

    • Written by from walnut creek

Bought with scepticism but from a great, knowledgeable, friendly sales person.
Hooked up my Huawei 4G LTE modem router, through ethernet flawlessly.
Hooked up my Lian Li USB3 HDD cage with 5 HDD's perfectly.
Streaming my 2TB movie collection to AppleTV, MacBook Air, iMac without stutter.
(Library on iMac and media files on external HDD attached to router).
Using one of the HDD's as time- capsule for my Mac's.

This unit took me 2 mins to set up and looks so much better than I expected.
Worth every cent when hooked up like this unit is hooked up.

I thought Apple had lost me there for a while .... but my new Airport Extreme and new Macbook Air have made it so easy to stay committed.

    Airport Extreme and airport express

Better range compared to previous Airport Extreme.

    • Written by from San Francisco

Never had any problem with previous Airport Extreme, but in new house my iPhone's Wifi dropped out. Office is 2 walls and 2 fridge freezer away from the Airport. This new Airport manages to keep my iPhone on Wifi with 2 bars. Problem solved.

Really fast! Almost flawless install too!

    • Written by from OLMSTED TOWNSHIP

OK, the problems first. I had a hard time installing this. Turns out I didn't follow the directions telling me to leave my cable modem unpowered for several minutes (I only powered it down for a minute max). IF I had followed the directions correctly, I would have had this up and running in like 5 minutes. It was THAT easy to install.

Now, it's running great and I am getting fantastic response on all my wireless devices throughout the home, with much better speeds than my older Linksys unit. In short, expensive but worth it in terms of performance and ease-of-set-up.
