    Get One

The performance baseline for this review are the numbers obtained with my pathetic Windows laptop connected to my Verizon FiOS router via ethernet cable. My service is 50 Mbps up and down. Numerous speed tests, using multiple test sites, in this configuration, resulted in speeds of between 58 and 62 Mbps. Using wireless N my iPad Air closely matched those numbers via WiFi using the Verizon WiFi router. The laptop however, also using wireless N, could barely muster 38 to 42 Mbps while sitting right next to the Verizon WiFi router. After installing the AirPort Extreme I ran multiple tests over time at varied distances from the unit. The already blistering fast iPad Air gained a couple megabits but what really improved was the performance at distance. My laptop gained over 10 to 15 Mbps over the Verizon routers performance also with increased range. I should also note that my Apple TV no longer displays those pesky error messages when connecting to iTunes and authorization and loading times are much shorter. I do not presently have any wireless ac devices but my next MAC that replaces the Windows laptop certainly will as will the next generation Apple TV. The performance increase alone makes the AirPort Extreme worth every penny. The AirPort also looks typically Apple, that is, sleek and modern sitting on my desk with a minimum footprint as opposed to routers that look like space ships from a 50's scifi movie with ugly antennas sticking up all over. Another plus is the AirPort Utility application which allows fast and easy access to the router's settings and information. I monitor the surrounding WiFi environment and my next door neighbor just had wireless installed. I like being able to gain quick access to the channel settings and set up what works best for "me".

Great upgrade for older Apple router

I bought the Extreme to replace a much older Time Capsule. Unbelievable improvement in wireless throughput. We're in a row house and I can see 40 wireless routers (using WiFi Explorer from the Mac App Store). Surprisingly, all were in the 2.4 GHz band. So we were seeing much better wired performance than over the air, in part because of interference and collisions.

I guess most people don't upgrade their routers as a matter of course. Now we have the 5 GHz band to ourselves. Wireless data rate increased tenfold. I think the more sophisticated antenna design in the new Extreme may be just as important as the absence of competition on the 5 GHz band. Wired and wireless connections now run at just about the same speed, even two floors away from the new router.

Setup was easy, even though I had (stupidly)) shut off the old router before seeing that the new Airport offers a "migration" feature to pick up existing configs from a router being replaced. Also, I was happy to see that the new Extreme still talks over wired ethernet to an old Airport Express we have on the top floor. We'd been using the old Express to extend our network. But, with the improvements in the new Extreme, I'm not sure that's necessary anymore.

Easy set up & works great

I needed to replace a CISCO router that was several years old. I read many of the reviews on the AirPort Extreme prior to making my purchase. I must say that my experience so far with this base station as been very satisfactory. I am experiencing much improved speed. The set up could not have been simpler. I simply downloaded the AirPort Utility app to my IPAD (would also down load to my IPHONE 5S), plugged in my AirPort Extreme and that is about all I had to do, except name my network, put in a password and tap next. I continue to be impressed with Apple products.

Gives Early '09 iMac New Life

My home router connects through my ISP modem and ran into an initial installation glitch, probably my fault, called the free (for 90 days) support line and was talked through the setup process (including using my old Airport as a 'router extender') by an extremely competent and patient support guru. The new Airport Extreme worked like a charm within 90 minutes of being out of the box. My Early '09 iMac operates noticeably faster and crisper, so much so I think I will defer plans to replace it with a newer model. One minor complaint is the extremely tiny size of the instruction booklet font, virtually unreadable in the absence of microscopic eyes, had to use a magnifying glass, and the same is true of deciphering the serial number etched into the bottom of the device. In terms of living up to its advertised promises, however, I couldn't be happier with current Airport Extreme.

Airport Express is an excellent router.

I have a cable modem and it took me longer to unpack the Airport Express than it did to install it. The trick is to follow all the prompts exactly. I was up and running in under 10 minutes and that amount of time would have been sooner except I was running wires behind the desk.
In one review it says that it absolutely will not work with an ATT Micro-Cell. I find that curious because it works just fine with mine. Any trouble I've had with the Micro-Cell has been traced to the device itself, not the Airport Express.
I've ordered another Airport Express to use as an extender. It isn't that I want to be able to pick up my network 10 blocks away, it is because I live in a stucco house and the wire mesh can act as a Faraday cage. We are changing to monitored systems such as the Nest Thermostat and the Nest Protect, so I want to make sure there aren't any "dead zones" inside the house.
Yes, it's expensive, but you get what you pay for.

    The best router

I've had many routers for last 5 years, but When I change all with Apple Airport how everything works fine. I have one Airport Extreme in The living room and one Airport Express in the bedroom. The internet connection is super and the speed of Home Network is the best. I have many devices at home - Mac Mini, MacBook pro, MacBook Air of my wife, 2 iPhones, 1 iPad, one WD My Cloud wifi hard drive and 2 Smart TV which I use to play movies and music from Internet and from My WD My Cloud wifi hard drive. This is the best configuration ever, and I've never thought to change AirPort with something else.

    Extreme Performance & Minimum Fuss

Ever since I installed this router it has performed flawlessly. This A1408 model AirPort Extreme covers our entire home with a signal pattern that has no obvious dark areas. It has never required a reboot and is compatible with all of our devices.

This was my first experience with the Apple Airport Utility. It seemed weird not to use a web page for configuration. At first I missed the “control” of the traditional router interface until I realized that the configuration utility had our home network up and functioning faster than any web page ever had. I set up a guest network with a separate password without using the manual.

The 5th generation Airport Extreme is a great WiFi router.

    Simple, Easy, and Reliable

I was looking to replace my n-standard router which was giving me connectivity issues on multiple devices. I have been happy with my switch to the Airport Extreme and look forward to its continued use at home. Setup was a breeze, and while other brands have more customizable features when it comes to management, the available changes are more than adequate for anybody's home network. I have had zero issues with connectivity, the network range has increased without using a repeater, and I feel comfortable saying it is definitely worth the price despite only having it for a few days.

    Great router & NAS works!

Network setup: modem - netgear wireless router (connected 8 port switch & airport extreme)

Hardware connected to airport extreme AE is a 3TB WD NAS & an iMac

The wifi coverage provided by AE within the house is amazingly fast. BTW, I have 3 story house including the basement. The good thing is I can now access all my files stored in WD NAS from PS3 (wired thru 8 port switch) and all my idevices (iphones, ipad mini) and MAC computer (MBP & iMac). With this network setup my Apple TV works perfect as well.

Overall, I'm a satisfied owner now of Airport Extreme.

Amazing speed increase from older model

After experiencing increasingly pokey download speeds with my prior (5+ year old) AirPort Extreme, I bit the bullet and bought the current version. It was a breeze to install and get up/running, and the speed increase is dramatic, going from 8-10Mpbs to 216 (!!) Very glad I upgraded.

    Works great, lots of range

Bought this to replace my old d link n extreme router which had an unreliable connection (random disconnections). The airport extreme has more range, always stays connected and is very easy to set up.

    Easy to set up
    lots of range
    reliable
    no problems

    Fantastic Router

I have 100mb connection at home and this is the only router that didn't drop any speed when using WiFi. After all, what would be the use of paying for 100mb connection if you can't take advantage of it. The range of the router is also fantastic.

Great Upgrade over previous extreme, which was good!

Purchased to prepare for when i get new Mac and as I needed better coverage in very large house.

Worked straight from the box and gave immediate improved speed and coverage even on existing 802.11n which is all my old MacBook has. Streams HD from BBC iPlayer where before often struggled to get standard def.

But!!!! Be careful opening the box! I thought the reviews mentioning this must be being picky but I did take note - please do open it over a table or something soft. It does not come out of the box how you expect, or how Apple hoped it would either! If you are standing up and holding each part of the box in each hand as you open it YOU WILL DROP IT! - unless you have three hands and so can catch it as it falls!

    Finally Wifi

I am in a location where the only Wifi locations are locked. Recently, I needed to add a router for my solar panels so they could be monitored. The AirPort Extreme is so easy to use and I was finally able to sync my iPhone 5S to my Mac, needed Wifi to do that. Everything is working great and there is no reduction in speed.

    Works like it should

The installation of this router really was a non-event. Follow the instruction. I attached it to my Cable Modem, hooked it up to my switch, Vonage device, etc and turned it on. Shortly thereafter it was working. Very easy to configure using Airport Utility, add a guest network, etc. Very good range. I broadcast my SSID but have it secured, My only complaint? it costs more than some of its competitors but it is easy to bridge the network and extend the range, Very happy with it

Solid Router- Fast, Stable and Reliable

I've previously owned routers from D-link, linksys and asus, all of which gave me troubles that required me to restart the router on a daily basis.

Two months ago, I decided to give the apple airport extreme a chance and I was surprised by how much my wireless speed improved.

The most important factor (aside from speed) when it comes to routers is stability and reliability; out of the 2 months I've had it so far, I've experienced zero, yes 0 disconnections.

I also connected a 2TB western digital hard drive to the airport extreme and set up wireless time machine backup on 5 of my Macs, also works flawlessly.

This router may be a little more expensive than other brands, but as with many apple products, it is well-built and reliable.
