I have NEVER felt compelled to review anything, not even my car. That alone should tell you how strongly I feel about these. I do not consider myself an audiophile, but I like to think I have good taste. I've owned a number of Bose systems, Bang & Olufsen bookshelf speakers, and some AKG headphones.

Initially, I steered away from these because of the size. I'd rather have something larger (with presumably better sound) for the same price. I went to an Apple store in Atlanta and listened to a set of these. The store (as usual) was packed, noisy, and horribly distracting.

The first thing I noticed was the BASS. Yes, these have bass! No, it doesn't shake the walls, but it's there. It's tight, punchy, and distortion free even at higher volumes. The highs were clear and had much more definition then the competing Bose Companion 20 set I also listened to (which were good as well). They did get pretty loud, in my opinion. An Apple employee turned them up so high, that another employee there (from across the room), asked us to turn them down because he was trying to sell MacBooks!

I bought them. At home, where it's (relatively) quiet, the above qualities were even more apparent. They look beautiful on my desk, and blend in nicely to any interior. Very tasteful. The speakers are also well made, and have a good heft to them.

One last thing I was impressed by. Bowers & Wilkins website is superb! The support section is frequently updated, and they even had FIRMWARE UPDATES for these speakers, which were a breeze to install.

Look beyond the price and listen to these yourself.

    Fabulous A+

    • Written by from Walnut creek

This is my third pair of speakers from B&W. The others are on my Nak.

The mm1 just replaced a pair of Klipsch pro media 2.1 (daughters hamster chewed the power cord and fried a pcb in the klipsch sub- hamster survived). The reviews are all accurate except the negative ones that say these are tinny or not full, buzzy etc. On the contrary, couldn't be more balanced, pure, or full sounding. A pleasure on the ears. Seriously, anyone who says these stink or disappoint is a tool bag. The mm1 is simply a fabulous, fabulous speaker system.

Pro medias were good, but I enjoy this sound much more. Worth the difference.

    Okay...these ROCK!

    • Written by from KAILUA

Wow...just...wow. If you can afford these bad boys, pick them up! Warm tones, great bass, good highs, nice balance of bass and highs, just amazing all around sound. A couple things: Do not put these behind anything (I know, DUH). I thought I could put them slightly behind my Imac's monitor, but the sound suffers significantly if they're covered even a little bit. The right side will run kind of hot, but try not to worry. Also, maybe it's just me, but it took a little bit for me to truly appreciate the sound these give off...Try playing something from all the genres you like and see your positive opinion of these grow...By the way, the audio sweet spot is right in front of them, so if you're going to show them off, have the person sit down where you normally sit...and if you've used an equalizer on your ipod settings, take 'em off, or at least give them a listen WITHOUT eq...I was amazed how much better these sounded when I turned the eq off...
I know, they don't have a subwoofer (they're 2.0, not 2.1), but if you aren't trying to shake the walls of the room you're using these in, you will be pleasantly surprised how much low end these have.
Just to make sure these were as good as I thought, I compared these to the Bose music monitors, the 2.0 set that seemed to be the closest in positive reviews and price. The Bose have brighter highs, but the lows and overall sound balance can't even come CLOSE to the MM-1s.
If price is an issue, ask people to give you apple store cards for your birthday and Christmas, and get yourself a pair! BONUS: you can plug it into the USB and STILL plug in your ipod to the AUX...awesome! I gave these only four stars because their price will keep a lot of people who could really appreciate these from getting them...boo!
p.s. I saw in some reviews that the sound suffers if you play bad quality mp3s on these...have not had that problem.

    Great pair of speakers

Just received my B & W MM-1 Speakers...highly recommended!!! I also bought the 3-piece computer speakers from Bose. The subwoofer is rather clumsy. No comparison to the B & W. Great sound with good bass. I love them and I use them to practice my guitar. Best computer speakers I have ever had.

    Very satisfied.

You know you're getting a good product when the apple store employee is jealous of your purchase (he likes the MM-1 much better than the Focal).

I am not an "audiophile." (I think lamp cord transmits electricity very well thank you)

However, I do love music and appreciate excellent sound quality.

If you want excellent hi-fi quality music while sitting at your desktop, I highly recommend these speakers.

I have them in a room that is 10x15 and it fills the room with crystal-clear sound. If you want to rattle your windows with bass, get speakers with a sub. If you want to hear the fingers on a guitar string or the brush on a snare, you can't get better for a computer. Plus they are amplified speakers - great sound without need for a separate bulky amp and component system set-up. Save that for the home theater. These speakers look and sound great. My whole family loves them.

    Wow! What impressive sound!

    • Written by from SCHENECTADY

I am a huge computer speaker audiophile and I can say without a doubt that theses are the cleanest sounding speakers I have heard in recent years. The sound is clean, rich, and the bass not overpowering. A pure joy to listen to and enhances my sound experience while listening to my iTunes. My only con for this product is they are a bit overpriced for what they are, and there is no volume control that controls just the speakers. Sound levels are gained by a smartly styled remote that taps into the computers volume control. A small flaw in what are exceptionally great speakers! Highly recommend!

    very very nice

    • Written by from Washington

the sound is gorgeous. have it hooked up directly to the macbook pro via usb. love the sound. BUT....it would be nice if it could hook into an Airport Express, Time Machine, or Apple TV (all of which I have) via USB as well and be recognized by iTunes as a speaker. This is a big drawback in my book. I'd rather not be tethered to them and use them remotely in the same room via wireless to serve as my speakers. So Apple get to updating the iTunes software to make this work!!?? Or whatever. Would make it a full 5 stars. Don't want to use stereo plugs on the Airport Express to do this is it really reduces the sound quality.

WOW! Much better than the Palo Alto Cubik's

    • Written by from MURRAY

PRODUCT: Very nice packaging and great size. The design of the speakers are great, very clean and simple, yet modern. The Right Speaker has a very sleek brushed aluminum strip around the speaker which includes the Power Button, +/- Volume Buttons and in the rear, a headphone and 3.5mm Aux jack which is nice. The bottom of the right speaker is the inputs for power, USB and to the left speaker, I thought this was very smart to keep wires as clean as possible. The build quality is very nice, you'd expect so for $500. Includes a wireless remote control which is also nice. Overall, a very nice looking speaker and very nice construction.

SOUND: WOW. They sound amazing. I played both lossless FLACs and compress MP3s and both sounded unreal. These speakers ability to reproduce instrument sounds from the Cello and Violin from a local group called "The Piano Guys" was simply amazing. The lows they were able to make from the Cello, blew my mind. These speakers are simply amazing to sum it up, but are they worth $500? Uhh… that's hard to say. I would suggest they are more worth $300-$400 tops. However these speakers are amazing and if you can afford them, you won't be disappointed unless you're use to perfect audiophile setups.

Easy to install. Quality Sound!!! Not too impressed with the design of the remote control (i.e., flimsy;and intermittent IR contact when pointing the remote to the speakers at certain angles). The top portion of the right speaker gets very hot but from reading other reviews, it appears to be normal.

Like the title says at low levels they are extremely clear. Not so great with my dubstep collection. Large base collectors should probably avoid these but all other music sounds amazing.

    Great speakers

    • Written by from Winnipeg

These are excellent speakers. Before these speakers, I used Altec Lansing and Harman Kardon Soundstick. Harman Kardon was a definitely step up from Altec Lansing. MM-1 sounded had a bit more depth to the sound. It has a plenty of base although it's not as customizable as the Soundstick. Most Apple stores will have this unit available testing. You definitely should test it before you buy this.

    Pros: good sound, good design
Cons: expensive, takes up an usb outlet, right speaker gets hot. It's not enough to burn anyone, but probably enough to damage a battery of your iPhone or iPod.

Outstanding clarity, limited dynamics and bass

    • Written by from Ottawa

As you would expect, since this is a tiny speaker and there's no defeating the laws of physics, so this speaker is not going to compare to a larger sub + satellite system or larger powered speakers.

    I'll summarize the important points
    - The build quality is outstanding. They feel solid and I like the fact that they are all covered in a cloth like material and the speaker drivers are protected by a perforated plastic grill, so there is no way you can accidentally damage the drivers behind the cloth covering. The top is brushed metal and they are little jewels of metal and cloth
    - The sound is outstandingly clear, the tweeters convey an airy sound so you can hear the shimmer of cymbals, and the midrange is solid so you can hear vocals with clarity
    - The bass response is limited, they probably convey bass detail down to about 90Hz by my ear, and thanks to B&W sound processing, it manages to stay full sounding even at slightly lower volumes. Because of their DSP processing which tailors the sound quality at any given volume, the sound is clear even when you start cranking it and the circuitry works hard to make sure the sound doesn't break up prematurely, but there's only so much the little drivers can do, so in the end, the speaker is very satisfying considering its size but don't expect miracles....you won't mistake these for much larger speakers that cost a fraction of the price.
    - The speaker emits a slight hiss that isn't that noticeable except in a quiet room, but some people who has younger ears may find it slightly too evident
    - The right speaker gets astonishingly warm even with no music playing so it's probably eating up lots of power. This is a bit surprising considering that this speaker uses digital amps
    - The remote is small but handy

All in all I like these and if they were $300 I'd recommend them for anybody who wants a premium ultra compact setup, but at $500 I only recommend them if you absolute want something cool and stylish in your fancy office tbat takes up a minimal of desk space. Right now there are plenty of competitors that offer more bang for the buck sound quality wise. If you don't need a built in USB DAC, I would look at the Focal XS Book, Paradigm A2, PSB PS1, NHT Superpower which are all regular powered speakers which can play louder and cleaner, offer more usable bass response, and offer refined sound as well

    1. Absence of BASS !!! Not quite enough for me.. not alone on this!

    2. Sound good when sitting, idle, right at center, in front of my iMac 27.

As I type this... I am sitting in front of a set of speakers that currently have about 700 near perfect 5 star review rating... ant hey cost me $362 LESS than these... Klipsch 'Pro 2.1" Do Yourself a favor... Seriously!!!

These speakers sound AWESOME!! I live in a condo and they are more than loud enough to fill the space with fantastic sound. Just a beautiful looking speaker with quality that booms!
Expensive...yes, but they're worth the extra cost. When compared to the built-in speakers on my iMac it's night and day.
    Highly Recommended!!! I love em'!!

    Awesome speaker!

    • Written by from Vancouver

if you prefer product with great design and quality
if you like compact designed stuff or your room has little space
    then go with this one!
I am not a high end HiFi guy, but for event like listening mp3 music, watching movies, playing games, the sound is clear, rich and vivid, and you can't believe the bass is coming from those little ones. Simply amazing!

If you looking for flaws, I think 1st one is that the cloth cover, it gets dusty easily and not that easy to clean; 2nd one is I think the design of the remote does not fit the design of the speaker, more like remote for Zeppelin; 3rd flaw is that the power button on the speaker is a bit difficult to use, every time I try to turn off the speaker with the power button, I ended up mute the speaker, so I have to try press hard and hold it again to turn it off or most of the time I go find the remote and turn off with it.

Well those flaws are not very significant, so you can probably ignore them.

Highly recommend this! Or if you want even smaller ones you can go with the Bose monitor, but that pair doesn't look as good as this and the sound is too crispy sometimes I find irritating my ears.

    Beautiful style & excellent sound

For the size of these boxes, they produce terrific sound. Excellent bass. Very focused image. Great soundstage front to back and fairly wide given they are only 2 feet apart. Excellent for near field listening of loss less music, tv shows from iTunes, and Youtube. Of course they are not a substitute for a full scale stereo or home theater system. Distortion at very high (uncomfortable) volumes.

I am a lover of classical music and photography. To suggest that I spend $500 on speakers for a computer is insane! So, now I am insane, amazed beyond belief and very thankful for the experiences from Bowers & Wilkins. I live in an apartment and hate using headphones. Now i can experience the depths of music with my photos and spend hours away from the chaos of the world in the joy of sight and sound. Thank you!

I've been wanting to get really decent computer speakers for quite some time. They always seem to get trumped by another purchase or upgrade. Well let me just say I finally broke down and ordered myself a pair of these speakers. All I can say is OMG! If you're like me and listen to most of your music while sitting at your computer, these are a must have. Trust me, the other stuff can wait. Due to space limitations I wanted the best 2.0 setup I could get. I think I got all I wanted with these. Simply outstanding sound from such a small package.

This sounds cliche, but music I've had for ages that I had grown bored of is exciting again. It's like I was listening though earplugs before!

They sound best when you're sitting directly in front of your Mac or PC. As reviewer "DJ from Summerfield" notes, these are incredible when it comes to stereo imaging. It sounds like there's a third channel coming in the center.

    A Whole New World

    • Written by from Asheboro

Argued with myself for months, took the plunge and ....

Bass - Good, not great, but comparable to Bose 20's

    Highs - WOW ++++

Where they shine is midrange and upper midrange, they have the clarity of some of my best Dennon Earphones. (alright, maybe better)

Overall they are a class act and make me want to "rehear" and "relive" some music as I do not recall hearing a lot of what these bring out.

Compare to Beolit 12 that is more expensive, bass - not as good, but more polished sound at lower midrange, the rest...midrange and up leaves it in the dust for clarity and precision.

Most important, would I repeat the purchase, absolutely!

Midrange sound on up they can go head to head with my POLK $2,000 system.
