The first backup.

Your first backup with Time Capsule and Time Machine could take overnight or longer, depending on how much data you have. So if you’re using a notebook, leave it in the same room as Time Capsule for faster 802.11n performance. Once the initial backup is complete, all your backups going forward are incremental. That means Time Machine copies only files that have changed since the previous backup. And it all happens automatically in the background.

500GB and 1TB sizes

Make the most of it.

Time Machine backs up your entire hard drive, making the 500GB or 1TB Time Capsule the ideal backup device. Make good use of that massive storage by customizing Time Machine. Just select Options from the Time Machine preference pane and add files you want to exclude from your backup sessions.

Put Time Capsule in charge.

Remember, Time Capsule doubles as a full-featured AirPort Extreme Base Station with high-speed 802.11n Wi-Fi. So if you’re adding Time Capsule to an existing wireless network, you’ll want to set it as your primary base station, rather than as a network client. That way, you benefit from its faster performance and ensure that your backups occur without any speed bumps.

Stay plugged in.

Time Capsule is a great wireless backup solution for notebook users. For your backup to initiate automatically, your notebook’s power adapter must be plugged in. Conserve your battery and guarantee that your backup session completes in its entirety.

To be continued.

Say Time Machine is in the middle of a backup, and you want to shut down your Mac or put it to sleep. No problem. Time Machine simply stops the backup process and remembers where it left off. It automatically resumes when your Mac is active again.
