Learn more about AirPort Extreme

  • Ultra-fast 802.11ac Wi-Fi.

With 802.11ac technology and a powerful beamforming antenna array, AirPort Extreme gives you up to 3x faster Wi-Fi and a stronger, clearer signal.1 And because it transmits at both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies at the same time, your wireless devices will automatically connect to the best available band for the fastest performance possible.

    Designed with performance in mind.

With the antennas at the top of the elevated design, AirPort Extreme now has a higher platform for dispersing the signal. We also increased the number of antennas. There are now six of them — three for the 2.4GHz band and three for the 5GHz band. Together with 802.11ac technology, they let you connect faster, farther, and with more power than ever before.

Easy setup for iOS and OS X.

Connect your DSL or cable modem to AirPort Extreme and use the built-in setup assistant to create your new wireless network in just a few taps from your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. If you’re using a Mac, use the built-in AirPort Utility. Setup is just as fast and just as easy.

Share your hard drive or printer.

AirPort Extreme can turn any external USB hard drive into a secure drive you can share across your Wi-Fi network. So all the documents, videos, photos and other files instantly become available to anyone, Mac and PC users alike. You can even connect a printer and share it wirelessly.

    Compatibility and security.

Any Wi-Fi device you have will work with AirPort Extreme. That’s because it’s compatible with devices using the 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n and 802.11ac specifications. And since AirPort Extreme features a built-in firewall that protects your network from malicious Internet attacks, you can enjoy the web with peace of mind.

Picked up the first one in Manchester Arndale this morning, I'd been waiting for this 802.11ac upgrade for a while.
Excellent ran Picked up the first one in Manchester Arndale this morning, I'd been waiting for this 802.11ac upgrade for a while.
Excellent range, superb speeds, quick and easy set up, looks great.
Supports local loopback feature which I really needed, the old standard package router I used to use has nothing on this new AirPort Extreme.
Looking forward to using 802.11ac devices with it.
Highly recommended, overall a great buy.

My laptop (and all my computers) is only 802.11/n but it has much better speed than before. I was only able to get about 81 to 108 My laptop (and all my computers) is only 802.11/n but it has much better speed than before. I was only able to get about 81 to 108 mbits/second from my corner of the house, but now it's 162 to 216. Meanwhile, in the room itself, computers there are getting 450 mbits/sec instead of 300.

So even if you have old hardware there are benefits to speed and distance, as hoped and expected, but you never know.

Delighted Ordered immediately after WWDC 2013 to replace an venerable Linksys WRT54G whose fading antenna power was failing.

Delighted so far, setup was straightforward, done in less than 10 minutes from opening the box. Gigabit ethernet is delivering the full bandwidth from my cable modem for the first time and the wireless coverage is uniformly excellent in my thick walled and three storey Victorian terrace, noticeably quicker for my n capable devices. I don't have any ac devices yet to test those even higher speeds.

Wireless sharing of a Kodak printer also working as hoped.

Happy to recommend - nice job Apple.

  • Very disapointed with Speed and Range

This is the first Apple product that I had to return.
Pros: Very well made, Beautiful looking hardware
Cons: Its wireless only. This is the first Apple product that I had to return.
Pros: Very well made, Beautiful looking hardware
Cons: Its wireless only. You need a modem to connect to the broadband. I bought this to replace the Sky Broadband modem+wifi as the range was not good enough and the speed was dropping considerably after 25 feet. Unfortunately Airport Extreme performed worse than the 3 year old Sky Box! I tried various channels but no joy. I speed tested on most channels but speed was 3-4mb slower than the Sky and the range was poor too. Not sure what to buy now.

Apple, I salute you! I used to have a Virgin Media Super Hub-2, which is the most god-awful piece of hardware that has even been Apple, I salute you! I used to have a Virgin Media Super Hub-2, which is the most god-awful piece of hardware that has even been designed. My internet used to drop 3-4 times a day, and each time I would have to manually reset the Virgin Media Hub. I read some blogs and saw people were recommending to put the Virgin Media Hub in to modem only mode, and then buy an Apple AirPort Extreme to do the clever stuff.

I can tell you, the results have been transformative! Since install, I've not had a single Internet drop (installed 2 months ago), my speeds have doubled (I have 150 Mbps, but only used get around 70 Mbps) and coverage has improved throughout the house. I highly recommend this product - worth every penny and then some.

    Thank you, Apple!

Used to replace our Infinity Home Hub 3 so the BT modem now connects to the WAN port on this instead. Great result, no more loss o Used to replace our Infinity Home Hub 3 so the BT modem now connects to the WAN port on this instead. Great result, no more loss of network that was dropping several times a day, and no more spending hours on the phone to BT in India trying to resolve the issue.
