It looks similar to the previously released Super Drive. However Apple claims that this updated model supports the new Retina Display MacBook, as well as providing support for other macs that do not come equipped with a built-in drive. It is well constructed and from the moment you open the box, you know you are in for a high quality item.

The drives footprint is no larger than a standard CD case; I have taken mine in my bag to work and had no problems with added bulk or weight. It connects to the mac via USB and there is no additional software to install. It has not failed to recognise any DVD or CD that I have inserted. With a slot loading mechanism, there are no buttons on the drive and no hatches to lift. Simply insert the disc by sliding it in the slot and remove via the on screen eject button. I feel obliged to add that the cable from the Super Drive is fairly short (~12 inches). This may be a pro or con, depending on your needs, but the cable can be extended using a usb extension.

Conclusively, the Super Drive is a premium product that works well out of the box, and presents with no issues. What you are getting is a device that compliments the aesthetics of your mac and functions efficiently. 5/5

One caveat however, is that the usb lead used to connect the drive is ridiculously short which sometimes makes it inconvenient to use. You would think for the price charged Apple would supply an extension to the lead in case it was needed.

It is disappointing however that this external SuperDrive does not permit multisession recording on a CD-R through Disk Utility. Although the check box for appending a recording to disk is displayed in the drop-down menu in Disk Utility, it is not selectable. I obtained two sets of instructions from the Web for creating a Burn Folder to burn data using Disk Utility and in both cases was instructed to select the ‘Append’ check box. I therefore assume that this works only with internal drives in the iMac. Single session recording is easy, but this closes any further use of the CD. Whilst I can create multisession CD-R’s easily with my PC Laptop using the Nero Express Disc Burning software that came with Windows 7, it is frustrating that Apple cannot satisfy this rather simple function.

  • Incredibly slow, unreliable and can not read data very well

This is an incredibly slow product. I am waiting 50 mins to copy 4GB of data that other drives can copy in 10 mins. This drive als This is an incredibly slow product. I am waiting 50 mins to copy 4GB of data that other drives can copy in 10 mins. This drive also does not read optical media very well and dvd's that my player can read and Windows machines can read can not be read by this device.

The data pass through rate seems to be very slow and because there in no eject button you have to go through many setting menus to try to convince the drive to eject because it just does the heck it wants.

If you want to make you life harder and your day slower, buy one of these. There is not much super about the SuperDrive.
