In September 2002, middle schools in the State of Maine started an incredible journey providing every seventh grade student with his or her own laptop. Unlike any students before them, these students are experiencing a new learning environment where they are developing 21st-century learning skills by using Apple iBook computers as powerful learning tools. They and their teachers have learned to use technology as critical tools for learning, research, collaboration, communication, and creative self-expression.
Since 2002, the journey has continued with more than 36,000 iBook computers being used by every 7th and 8th grade teacher and student in Maine’s public middle schools. The results are both outstanding and real. Student engagement and motivation are up, absenteeism and disciplinary incidents are down, and students are taking a more active role in their education.
Today, students in Maine high schools who participated in 1 to 1 Learning are different learners than before. They are different because they spent two years in Apple 1 to 1 Learning environments where they had ubiquitous access to the latest digital tools. And they are now prepared with the skills that using their iBook computer has helped them develop—collaboration, communication, and management of their busy schedules and multiple school projects. Technology has enabled them to achieve at higher levels than ever before.
MLTI Focus Areas
In aligning with the goals of the Maine Department of Education, Apple and Maine educators focus on three key areas to ensure the success of MLTI: Leadership, Professional Development, and Learning and Teaching. In each of these areas, programs were established including teacher leaders, summer training workshops, and using assessment to guide learning. Project-based learning and online research have also been instrumental in supporting this amazing journey for students and educators in Maine. Download PDF
