Elementary School Students Become Podcasting Pros

Profiles in Success: Wells Elementary School

An Outstanding Educational Tool

Though test preparation and other events occasionally intervene, Sprankle’s students normally record a podcast each week. “Bonus shows” are added whenever something particularly exciting is happening at Wells. Now, parents can tune in from the comfort of their homes, and hear their own children reporting on the work they’re doing. Also, parents can “virtually” join a class on a field trip, or listen to a school concert, with the podcasts providing an “open window” into their children’s day. Given the students’ excitement about the technology, and its ability to engage and motivate, Sprankle is confident that many more podcasts are in his school’s future.

“Kids have to read, write, and do research,” Sprankle concludes. “Why not make it count, and make it possible for them to share the experience? Our parents tell us their kids are motivated and excited about coming to school now, and they’re talking about what they’re doing here. I believe that podcasting is responsible for that. It’s one of the best tools in education today.”
