Paul McCartney Stretches His Wingspan

Wingspan It was truly a band on the run, starting in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1971 and culminating in London, England, in 1980, with stops along the way in Copenhagen, Sydney, Venice, New York, and Los Angeles. To celebrate its run, Paul McCartney has just launched a website that chronicles the history of Wings, the upbeat itinerant rock band he started after the Beatles broke up and that included his wife Linda as keyboard player and vocalist.

Paul’s site includes video and audio tracks, as well as some special video messages that he recently recorded in Berlin, Milan, and Cannes to promote the May 7 release of “Wingspan,” his new compilation of 40 Wings hits.

Waiter Many young people who move to Hollywood dreaming of stardom end up waiting tables instead. But what if these tables were turned? What if serving food was the career goal and aspiring waiters got the run-around usually reserved for actors and actresses?

In the short comedy, “The Waiter,” an apprentice waterboy (Jon Cryer) dares to pursue his Hollywood dream, even if it seems more like the Tinseltown nightmare. The film co-stars David Schwimmer, Laraine Newman, Gloria Reuben, and Sally Kellerman.

Starting with their debut album “Murmur” in 1983 to their latest CD, “Reveal” (released on May 15), the members of R.E.M. describe the musical passion behind each of their recordings.

Jurassic Park Get ready for the dino-mite sequel, “Jurassic Park III. ” This time around, Paul and Amanda Kirby (William H. Macy and Téa Leoni) persuade paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) to give them an aerial tour of Isla Sorna, the infamous breeding ground for dinosaurs run by InGen.

But after their plane crashes on the treacherous island, Grant discovers the couple’s ulterior motive for the trip: to rescue their son, who was stranded there after an accident. Will they find the boy? Can they escape the island’s terrifying reptiles, including the Spinosaurus, InGen’s top secret dino clone?

Find out in U.S. theaters on July 18. But watch the cool new trailer now, including a full-screen version for you broadbanders.

Heath Ledger and “A Knight’s Tale”
In “A Knight’s Tale,” a peasant squire (Heath Ledger) assumes the role of the knight he serves, Sir Ector (Nick Brimble), after Ector dies just one joust away from winning an important tournament. What sounds like standard costume epic fare is actually a pop culture send-up, complete with modern humor references, vintage rock songs by David Bowie, Queen, AC/DC, and Bachman Turner Overdrive, and a special appearance by Geoffrey Chaucer.

Sound like the 1400s you know? Surely you joust. This oddball mix of comedy, action, and romance is now available for viewing in U.S theaters everywhere.

Like to hear more about the film direct from the film's star (and recent big-screen heartthrob) Heath Ledger? Then enjoy this video interview with Ledger at Rollingstone.com.

Depeche Mode

Writing for Rolling Stone, Barry Walters has this to say about Exciter: “Depeche Mode’s tenth studio album ranks miraculously high. Produced by Bjork collaborator Mark Bell, Exciter glimmers like a gentle ambient doodle with vocals: The beats are mostly minimal, closer to early Kraftwerk than to current electronica. But because [Martin] Gore’s songwriting is so focused and [Dave] Gahan’s vocal presence is so commanding, the softest songs leap to the foregound like a whisper from a lover.”

And you can hear the entire album by tuning in to the Depeche Mode Listening Party. Beginning today at 9 a.m., Pacific time, it runs through Monday, May 21, at 5 p.m., Pacific time.1
