Special Notice for Windows Customers

Apple has become aware of a compatibility issue between QuickTime and Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 and the Internet Explorer 6 Preview for Windows. To restore compatibility, those using these browsers need to install a small piece of software, called the ActiveX control, which is available on our website.

This issue affects ONLY those of you using one of the above versions of Internet Explorer on a Windows-based computer. It does not affect those using Internet Explorer on a Macintosh or those using Netscape Navigator, other versions of Internet Explorer, or other web browsers.

In short, the above versions of Internet Explorer no longer support Netscape-style plug-ins, such as the plug-in installed with QuickTime 5.0.2 and earlier versions of QuickTime. As a result of this issue, when you visit a site with QuickTime content, Internet Explorer will display the icon of a broken plug-in.

To resolve the issue, customers using Internet Explorer on Windows should visit our QuickTime site, where you will be prompted to download and install the ActiveX control (if you do not already have it). Note that if you have chosen to trust software from Apple during previous installations, you will not be prompted before the ActiveX control is installed.

Let Michael Jackson Rock Your World

Michael Jackson It’s certainly a busy time for the King of Pop.

He just turned 43. He’s about to release a new album. And he’s in final preparations for his star-studded 30th anniversary concert. Scheduled to open September 10 in New York's Madison Square Garden, the event will reunite him with his brothers for the first time in 20 years.

His new “Invincible” album isn’t due out until later this fall, but—by special arrangement—you can listen to “You Rock My World,” its first single at michaeljackson.com.1

Coming Soon: Macy Gray, Nickleback, Ben Folds

Though we’ll be taking a short hiatus over Labor Day and won’t publish again until September 21, we don’t want you to miss any musical activities in the interim—especially exclusive events by such exciting artists as Canadian metal band Nickelback, singer/pianist Ben Folds (September 11) and soulful R&B artist Macy Gray (September 18).

Not all the notes have been written yet, but we’ll make sure our staff puts the entire score for these—and any other late-breaking—music events on the QuickTime Hot Picks page.

Check in early next month, and be sure to listen up for Nickleback, Ben Folds, and Macy Gray.

QuickTime Hot Picks

Now for Something Completely Different
British comedian Robert Llewellyn invents improbable characters for short films on his website, BWebB. Llewellyn’s latest incarnation is The Happy Farmer, who offers his views on foot-and-mouth disease and the city folk who regularly invade his country land. Bother this farmer? Oi! No’ a bit!

Trailer Park

Step into the Time Machine On Christmas Day 2001, we’ll be treated to a remake of “The Time Machine,” based on the novel by the visionary author H.G. Wells, and directed by Simon Wells, great-grandson of H.G. himself.

Although the book and the 1960 version of the film both started in London, this remake opens at New York’s Columbia University in 1895, where professor Alexander Hartdegen (Guy Pearce) has built a time machine that propels him into the future. Hartdegen ultimately arrives in the year 802,701 to find that mankind is now made up of two races: the Eloi, who are fun-loving and peaceful; and the Morlocks, hideous monsters who live underground by day—and hunt the Eloi by night.

Unwrap an early Christmas gift by watching the teaser trailer today.

Thank you for reading this issue of QuickTime News.
