  Lord of the Rings
What’s Going On? A Special Tribute.

On September 5 and 7, a large ensemble of superstar entertainers — Destiny’s Child, Gwen Stefani, Bono, Jermaine Dupri, Wyclef Jean, Britney Spears, and too many others to mention here — gathered in New York City to record a new rendition of Marvin Gaye’s timeless call for compassion, “What’s Going On?”

The idea? To release a new single that would raise funds for the Global AIDS Alliance.

Just a few days later the world changed, and Gaye’s healing message suddenly held even greater relevance. Because of the tragic events in New York and Washington, the Global AIDS Alliance expanded its fundraising scope and will now split the single’s proceeds with the United Way’s September 11th Fund.

Check out the music video of “What’s Going On?” and see how many participating stars you can identify behind their blindfolds.

Can a movie inspire random acts of kindness? The French believe so.

After “Amelie” was released in its native France, the film moved its viewers in such a way that they began emulating the heroine’s selfless acts in real life.

“Amelie” is the story of a Parisian waitress who finds some old toys hidden in her home, searches for the original owner, and returns the toys to him anonymously. Amelie is so overjoyed by the man’s emotional reaction to her kindness that she starts seeking out new and creative ways to bring pleasure to strangers’ lives.

Will “Amelie” have the same result around the world as it did in France? Find out by seeing this delightful and critically acclaimed film, now appearing in U.S. theaters.

As a special treat for jazz fans, GMN.com and Columbia Records brings us a Playback of a historic 1959 video promotion of Duke Ellington’s recording of Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker Suite.”1

And while you’re visiting the Jazzplus site, you may also want to catch another Playback from Columbia’s musical treasure chest: Miles Davis and John Coltrane playing “So What.”1 The webcast begins today at 10 p.m., Pacific time.2

They’re the pioneers who bridged the musical genres of alternative music and hip-hop more than a decade ago. Today, the alterna-rap group Cypress Hill continues to break new ground with its latest album, “Stoned Raiders,” set for release December 4.
