Three years ago, the improvisational genius of the jazz artist Louis Armstrong was immortalized in a Grammy Award-winning 4-CD boxed set, “Louis Armstrong: The Complete Hot Five & Hot Seven Recordings.” Meticulously remastered, these classic performances were originally pressed on 78s between 1925 and 1929.

Columbia Legacy Jazz has just released the individual volumes (available at the iTunes Music Store either as complete CDs or single songs) of this classic boxed set. Sample three selections, “King of the Zulus,” “Wild Man Blues,” and “West End Blues.”


Fans of famed cellist Yo-Yo Ma and of Latin music will enjoy Ma’s new CD, “Obrigado Brazil,” scheduled for release on July 29. The album is a collaboration between Ma and notable Brazilian and Latin American artists, including Egberto Gismonti, Paquito D’Rivera, Oscar Castro-Neves, Cyro Baptista, Sergio and Odaire Assaud, and more.

Hear Ma perform the stirring bossa nova “Chega de Saudade” from the album. The song features singer/guitarist Rosa Passos.

Deftly combining traditional Irish music with West African rhythms and dance grooves, Ireland’s Afro Celt has created its own hypnotic genre. In a musically illustrated interview, band members talk about the Afro Celt sound, the recently released album “Seed,” and collaborations with such artists as Peter Gabriel, Sting, U2, and Sinead O’Connor.
