Hot News Headlines
“The iPod, Apple’s personal music player, is as close to ‘perfect technology’ as anything I’ve ever seen,” writes Lex van den Berghe in the Santa Cruz Sentinel. “It’s functionally light years ahead of its nearest competitor, beautiful in its simple and clean design, and (true to Apple) so easy to use.”

Joseph P. Kahn writes for the Boston Globe, “Even more wondrous than its sophisticated technology, though, is how the iPods and their ilk are changing the way music is being experienced, or reexperienced, by all sorts of audiophiles in all sorts of settings, from health clubs and school cafeterias to malls and subway cars.”

New Apple eMac — with faster PowerPC G4 processors running at up to 1.25 GHz, 333 MHz DDR memory, faster ATI Radeon graphics and USB 2.0 connectivity to peripherals, the eMac offers even more power and performance, not to mention truly affordable DVD burning.

Pearl Jam

What’s the video solution for the band that supports concert bootlegs and strongly believes in purity of music? Its own high-quality DVDs, grassroots style.

“They’re very protective of what gets put out for mass consumption,” says Pearl Jam video editor Steve Gordon. “And with things visual, Pearl Jam has never been interested in getting the big machine to do it.”

That’s why the very small Apple machine — mini-DVcams with Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro and ProTools on Power Macs and PowerBooks — has this eminently indie group embracing video with enthusiasm.

“The tools we’re using felt good to the band,” adds Gordon. “They can get a visual record of the show without corrupting the experience for themselves or the audience.”

QuickTime-based technology allowed Pearl Jam’s touring crew to expertly self-produce three professional quality DVDs, preserving the band’s performances in what singer/guitarist Eddie Vedder describes as a “non-traditional, almost grassroots way.”
