With 2005 just over the horizon, business owners can look forward to an even better grasp of their financial health thanks to the new accounting packages now available from Intuit and MYOB. The former recently began shipping QuickBooks: Pro 2005 for Mac, which offers “more customizable forms and easier ways to share data with QuickBooks for Windows.” It also lets you easily backup files to your .Mac account, a great way to archive and share files with, for example, your accountant. MYOB, meanwhile, offers two new accounting packages for Mac customers, including AccountEdge 2005 and AccountEdge 2005 Network Edition. The two AccountEdge 2005 products now offer expanded payroll services, letting you easily print (on plain paper) and electronically file over 250 US Federal and state tax forms. Need to manage clients? Track projects? Schedule appointments? Generate, track, and forecast new business? Then you need to see the light. The Daylite, that is. Daylite 1.7 is the newest version of Marketcircle’s #1 business relationship management program for the Mac. And you can read all about its new features on the DayLite site.  If you have physical shelves stuffed with books, DVDs, CDs, and video games and have longed for a simple way to keep track of them, you’ll want to read about Delicious Library. The innovative application lets you create a digital card catalog with minimal data entry. That’s because you can use iSight to scan product bar codes and rely on information available on the Internet to download complete product details. And once you’ve assembled your catalog, you can take your Delicious Library with you on iPod. MacCentral’s Peter Cohen points out that Micromat has recently introduced a security program just for those of us who take advantage of the massive storage space on iPod to archive important data. It could have been Debdoot Das. Because that’s exactly what happened to him. An accomplished film editor, Das loved Salsa so much and was so eager to improve his own dancing skills that he regularly traveled from Calcutta to Miami just to take workshops with the best US Salsa dancers.
Since he couldn’t bring the dancers back to India with him, he did the next best thing and filmed the classes. Friends raved about his footage, so Das turned a personal project into his directorial debut. The result? “The Quick & Dirty Guide to Salsa”—created with Final Cut Pro and DVD Studio Pro—has become the highest selling dance video on Amazon.com. “The coolest thing about this project,” says Das, “is that I could do it with about $1,000 worth of Apple software and my Power Mac G4.”

When Craig Stanley started James Craig Haircolor & Design, he wanted a stable computer system that would help him get his business going and keep it growing. So of course he chose a Mac.
While he needed it for all aspects of the business—from marketing to training to customer service to accounting—he also needed a computer that was people-oriented, easy to understand and learn, with a minimal training curve. “Hair stylists,” he notes, “tend to be a bit technophobic.” But Stanley and his stylists took to the Mac like a trusty pair of scissors, and the results have been impressive. Ever receive an email with text so small it’s almost impossible to read? In Mac OS X Mail, its easy to rectify that particular undersight. Pull down Mail’s Format menu, choose Style, and then select Bigger. No need to select any text, Mail will increase the text size in the entire email document.
As the menu suggests, you could accomplish the same feat by using the keyboard shortcut, Command-+. Or, one other option, add commands to increase and/or decrease text size to the Toolbar, where they’ll appear in every Mail message. To do so,

You can make them one song at a time. While browsing, you can drag an artist by name into a new or existing playlist—and all her tunes will follow her in. You can have iTunes compile Smart Playlists for you automatically. You can even make them On-the-Go.
