John Breeden II reviewed the 20-inch iMac and came away mightily impressed. “The monitor rotates around the silver arm,” he explains. “If you often collaborate with someone else or have multiple work areas, you can simply slide the LCD to where you want to use it. This impressive feature can’t be overrated. The monitor moves horizontally or vertically in such a smooth fashion that you can sit anywhere close by and adjust the monitor for optimal viewing. It does an excellent job of saving space, too.

Science Curriculum Mobile Lab The science teachers at Upperman High School have discovered an exciting new tool, and student enthusiasm has soared. What’s got everyone so excited about science?

The school’s new Science Curriculum Mobile Lab, of course.

“When we go on our hiking and camping trips,” says Janice Cox, the head of Upperman High Schools science department, “we’ll be able to take the iBook laptops and the probes, collect the data, put everything into the computers, and immediately see charts and graphs. With the digital microscopes attached, we can examine fungi or whatever the kids happen to find. Then when we get back, the students will use the iBook laptops to analyze the data and prepare presentations on their findings.”

Students helping students
At the Mac OS X Help Desk As more students use wireless iBooks in Apple’s 1 to 1 Learning initiative, districts are taking advantage of an Apple-sponsored program to help teach enterprising middle and high school students how to support each other.

In a one-semester course for up to 16 workshop attendees, the Mac OS Help Desk offers tools and training to set up student-managed Mac OS support centers. The students gain valuable experience and skills in problem solving, technology project management, and communication. And for their own support needs, the students have access to many of the same resources and databases as AppleCare technicians. It’s a great way to keep support costs down while giving students (or volunteers) solid, real-world experience.
