Hot News Headlines
Reuters joins a host of other news outlets reporting that the 100 millionth iPod has now been sold. “Since its November 2001 launch, the portable music player has become the must-have gadget worldwide, with Apple introducing more than 10 new models to incorporate changing technology such as the ability to record and play videos, hold photos, and with more varied, fashionable colours.”

“Switching to a Mac infrastructure may sound like an expensive proposition for a small business owner,” writes Jack M. Germain (Mac New World). “However, some who have made the change say they made the right choice.” Take, for example, the CEO of Stever Robbins Company: “I kept waiting and putting it off. Then my Windows computer kept crashing. I lost three-and-a-half days of my billable time as a consultant in getting my PC working again,” he explained. “The Mac changed my life, truly. I can’t imagine voluntarily switching back to Windows.”

Higher quality music. DRM free.

EMI Beginning next month, EMI Music will offer iTunes customers its huge catalog of music with higher audio quality and no usage restrictions. For just 30 cents more per track, you’ll be able to purchase and download music free of digital rights management (or DRM) that’s encoded at 256 Kbps (twice the current bit rate), making it all but indistinguishable from the original.

If you like the audio quality and freedom offered by the new tracks, you can upgrade the entire collection of EMI music already in your iTunes library for just 30 cents a track.

And, just like the music you already own, you can play the new tracks on any iPod, on Mac or Windows PCs, on Apple TV, and—when it arrives in June—on iPhone.

MGM movies come to iTunes

MGM Now you can take Rocky with you on your iPod. Or use Apple TV to watch it on the widescreen TV in your living room.

That’s because Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky—along with a treasure trove of other great movies from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios—now appears on iTunes. Just added to the store and available for immedate purchase and download, movies like Mad Max, Dances with Wolves, Bananas, Ronin, The Thomas Crown Affair, and The Great Train Robbery add to the wealth of comedies, dramas, musicals, thrillers, and sci-fi films you’ll find on iTunes.

You can purchase any of the new MGM titles on the store for just $9.99. In fact, the iTunes store will include more than 500 movie titles with the addition of the MGM collection. We’ll be adding more great MGM films in the weeks ahead. So stay tuned.

Aperture makes sharing point-and-click easy

Aperture No matter how confident you feel behind the lens, you’re always wondering what other people think about your work. The desire to share and get feedback takes pros like Inside Aperture’s Steve Simon to sites like Flickr, which Simon says, offers a “great way to get feedback on what you are doing and suggestions for making it better.”

And thanks to its Export Plug-ins, Aperture makes it easy for pros like Simon to share. “First I make a quick album with the images I want to upload. Then I select them all,” choose Export to Flickr from the File menu, “add the photos to a new photoset and voila,” the images stand ready for review by all takers.

In addition to the Flickr plug-in Simon employs, photographers have been snapping up other export plug-ins for Aperture, as well. You’ll find a growing collection of them on the Mac OS X downloads page.

Marketing luxury homes on a Mac

Michael Dreyfus When you’re selling multi-million dollar homes, the devil’s definitely in the details.

That’s why owner Michael Dreyfus and his associates at Dreyfus Properties take pains to capture each nuance of the travertine floors, gold-plated faucets, Italian marble tubs, and chiseled flagstone pathways that distinguish one property from the next. After photographing them, Dreyfus and his team import the high-quality images into iPhoto, tag them with keywords, and incorporate them in print materials and the Dreyfus website.

Creativity optimized Thanks to two window-mounted Cinema Displays, passersby can watch the slideshow of available properties as they stroll past the company’s Palo Alto headquarters. Or go up on the web and do a virtual walk-through of a new home listing. They’re creating those on a Mac now, too.
