Damaged my iPhone rather than protecting it

    • Written by from London

I got this case as part of the free case program to solve the issues I was having with signal strength. This it did, but in it's primary function, that of protecting my phone, it not only failed but actually damaged my phone by causing scuff marks on the stainless steel edges it was supposed to protect.

The problem appears to be that the combination of hard plastic and soft rubber actually work against each other. The soft rubber makes the case flexible and able to move against the phone and the hard plastic rubs against the steel, thus tarnishing it. I have been to the store for a replacement handset and have switched case. If you are looking to protect your phone from damage I suggest you look elsewhere.

    Waste of £25

    • Written by from Redcar

Totally overpriced...this is a nice design and works well - but it just isn't practical. Taking in and out of your pocket weakens the strength rapidly of the slim rubber part of the bumper and then it starts to break away from the plastic. Now the bottom of my phone only has plastic and no rubber as it has fallen off.
Not only this but the plastic also scratches the silver band around the iPhone.
Totally overpriced - rediculously! This is worth no more than £5...nevermind £25 and I'm glad this came free in the recent programme for iPhone 4. I will be buying a totally different brand.

The bumper scratches your iPhone 4, it leaves scratches all over the steel band.

This is the perfect case for scratches...

    • Written by from Loughborough

This case fills nice, and as a very good quality...
However it as a loose fit and it scratches the aluminum it is supposed to protect.
So, overall this is the perfect case if you want scratches on that perfect metal bezel.

    Bad protection!

This Case has scratch the steel at my iPhone 4.
Very bad when you expect it to protect your iPhone instead of scratching it. :(

    Don't buy it!

    Poor design

    • Written by from London

I cannot charge my iphone 4 while this case is on it, which is a pretty fundamental design flaw and really irritating, especially because it is the recommended Apple case and is needed in order to get reception.

    Great idea but marks phone

    • Written by from Shipton Bellinger

Loved the idea of the bumper, great design and looks great on the phone but within days of having it installed (from brand new and cleaned) I read a post from someone who said it had damaged the phone.

When I took the bumper off the stainless steel was tarnished in multiple places on all sides. Impossible most people say, it's stainless steel and the bumper is plastic/rubber.

If you don't believe it try it, most people who have used these have the same issue and the phone is forever damaged. The ONLY way to repair/fix it is to use an abrasive material to "brush" the steel and remove the marks. Not ideal.

The Bumper looks good, fits well and provides protection, not forgetting of couse solving the arial problem on the iPhone 4 (the reason it was produced in the first place).

However, within 6 months its flimsy plastic skeleton had broken at the charging point and some of the rubber has perished. After 8 months it is finished.

The worst thing was found on removal - all of the metal sides of the phone are scratch and worn from rubbing. I am not alone in this as everyone I know with one has the same problem.

I wonder if Apple will refurb my phone for free?

Breaks after a few months of use

    • Written by from Sheffield

Not only does this case scratch the aluminium that it is supposed to protect. It also breaks after a few months of general use. The weak points are around the headphone jack and 30pin port where the thin silicon easily stretches and breaks rendering the case useless. At £25 per case its gone to cost over £100 to case my phone for it average lifetime of 2 years.

iPhone 4 Bumper only has a short life span

    • Written by from Harrow

After buying the iPhone 4 in July 2010 and experiencing real loss of signal strength because I hold the iPhone 4 with my left hand, I applied for and received the iPhone 4 Bumper for free in September 2010.

During October, I also purchased an iPhone 4 dock so that I could charge my iPhone on my desk.

It appears that the iPhone Bumper designer at Apple did not consider the inconvenience that one has to go through everyday in having to put on and remove the iPhone Bumper when ever one want to charge up the iPhone, because you cannot place the iPhone 4 onto the iPhone Dock with the Bumper on. You have to do the same with the standard USB charger cable that Apple supplied with the iPhone. The designer also did not consider the quality and robustness of the materials to use for the iPhone 4 Bumper in order for it to withstand daily use.

I have now only had the iPhone 4 Bumper for 4 months and it has developed a split at the bottom end of the case, rendering it almost unusable.

So it seems giving out free iPhone 4 Bumpers was only a 'temporary fix' as if I now wish to purchase another Bumper (or anything else to protect my iPhone 4), it is going to cost me at least £25!

as the title says, i am disgusted with this case, it's branded as an apple product, but it seems there has been no research and development carried out at all. the flaws in this case are almost as bad as the reception issues on the phone itself.

    after two months of use

1 it has caused some very bad scratches around the steel band

    2 it's fallen apart already

3 you can't use the dock lead that comes with the phone whilst its fitted (so why put a hole there for it)

i have been a huge apple fan for several years now. but i am VERY disappointed in this product, i had to rate a one star as i wasn't allowed to mark it any lower!!!!!

Well I thought " the least ugly design destroy" - must be good - and it was - until I got it off and realized it had destroyed and scratched my (NEW!) iphone 4 instead of protecting it!!!!- use the iphone 4 as it is - and use the money for an insurance instead!

'durable' is not a word I would use

    • Written by from Peterborough

I was pleased with the case at first but within around 3 weeks the rubber became very loose and flimsy and by around 6 weeks had broken or torn in a few places. My case now only has half the original rubber and so not only looks tacky but now plays no practical role in preventing it from damage or making it comfortable to handle. Definitely not worth £25

    Doesn't last

    • Written by from Brightob

I first got one of these free with my iPhone 4 about 18 months ago since then I've been through 6 of them. They start off well fitting the phone snugly but what always happens is that after a couple of months the rubber stretches and comes away from the plastic and eventually splits.

To their credit Apple have swapped it out in store every time with no problems but I'd be annoyed if I'd dropped £25 on it.

If you do not want scratches on your phone do not buy this product. It looks nice but when you remove the case from the iphone after some time, there will be marks and scuffs left on the stainless steel band around the phone as the inside of the case is rough. Got the bumper from the free case program. Advice is to look for alternative cases.

functions great but only lasts a few months of normal use

    • Written by from Leeds

Primarily this is a great product... it does improve signal strength, it does protect iphone from minor bumps and drops all in a minimal form... with afew minor negative points... it should deserve 4 out of 5 stars...

BUT... the real problem here is the durability... mine has only survive 3 months of normal use (since I was given it for free from apple to sort antena issues)... But now it looks really shabby: the rubber outer is spilting and pealing, the shiney plastic is scuffed, scratched and dull...

Come on Apple... you successfully sorted a few months of antenna issues with these bumper cases... But what about the rest of my 24 month iphone contract?... what's the plan 6 more bumper cases at my own expense?... Surely not...

    Cheap quality, high price!

    • Written by from Norwich

I had the bumper for only a couple of months and already the 'durable' rubber has ripped and split, meaning the case is now un-usable.

And to think I though the £26 price tag for what is merely a thin strip of plastic and rubber would mean it would be of high quality and durable...
