The converter works as advertised. It lets me use an existing power supply with my new MacBook Pro Retina.

The converter's magnet attaches to the power supply's old MagSafe connector very effectively. The magnetic connection between the converter and the MacBook isn't as strong. The problem is that the old MagSafe adapter and the converter is now long enough that leverage makes it very easy to disconnect from the MacBook. This is very annoying, especially if you hold the MacBook in your lap while using it.

  • Great way to extend the life of existing adapters

Does what it claims to. Small and unobtrusive, works great with the Thunderbolt display. I'd rather be able to swap cords, but th Does what it claims to. Small and unobtrusive, works great with the Thunderbolt display. I'd rather be able to swap cords, but this is better than replacing the monitor!

As for the other reviewer complaining about having to replace his existing adaptors - that doesn't make sense. His existing adaptors work with his older machines, and with this they now work with his new machine. The only potential problem is if he is planning on a new location with only the new power adaptor... Inconvenient, sure - but hardly forced to buy a bunch of new stuff to replace his existing.

I have to use it with my retina macbook pro in order to connect to the thunderbolt displays we use at my work, so my laptop pretty much doesn't move while it's plugged in. I would say if you are only trying to use your laptop on your actual lap, go buy an actual adapter for your computer (what happened to the one that came with your laptop by the way?). But if you use it on a desk this thing works great. We've had multiple in the office for over 2 years and never have had to replace them.

  • I thought I just had a duff one, but it looks like I am not alone

I've been using one of these adapters for a couple of months on my macbook pro with a suitable wattage power supply, but now find I've been using one of these adapters for a couple of months on my macbook pro with a suitable wattage power supply, but now find that it has become unreliable. If I borrow a colleagues then it works fine, but switching back to mine results in pot luck as to whether it will decide to charge. The laptop detects it and switches to 'Power Adapter' mode, but doesn't actually charge up. I came to purchase a replacement, but having read the other reviews I will be investing in a new power supply instead.
