    Most reliable backup

    • Written by from SOUTH PORTLAND

This is one of two of the same model I have owned for the past 2 years, and they have both performed flawlessly for daily staggered backups. I have a 1TB Time Capsule too, but based on its reliability, I'm not optimistic about a long life.

What convinced to buy the first one was that the Apple Store employees were using them out on the floor.

This Lacie drives works easily with Time Machine and the older Apple Backup software.

    I highly recommend it.

As a photographer I needed a quick, easy solution for takings files to clients and on-the-go backup. The Rugged turned out to be a perfect solution. The quick transfer speeds let me get my data onto the drive quickly and with backwards compatibility with USB 2.0, and Firewire interface it'll work on most of my clients' computers.

    Sturdy Portable Drive

I like that this drive comes with all cables that one would need to use it. It's rugged enough so that I don't have to worry about the bumps and grinds of everyday use. It's compact and has an excellent choice of interfaces. The speeds are awesome. So five stars on all of the above.

On the Road / At Home

    • Written by from Toronto

I love these HD's, nothing is more important with external drives than reliability and the LaCie Rugged line offers that. I work in photography and design and I needed something that I could use at home and on the road and not have to worry about babying it too much. The first one I bough a few years ago I still use for Time Machine and regular file backup, the other two are for my photo catalogues in LightRoom. They're clones of each other for backup purposes and that all told is peace of mind. If you need to carry an external with you as well as have it at home I highly recommend this line for their speed, connectivity options and reliability.

    great product!

A lot of my project data is quite sensitive and I always have a concern about data security at the back of my mind – especially when travelling. This portable drive fits the bill perfectly. It's solidly built, of aluminium and several layers of rubber padding, the data is encrypted and password protected and the drive small enough that I actually take it with me everywhere. Very nice.

I purchased this drive for the purpose of working between both a mac and a PC. I formatted it for both. It works great with the Mac, but it won't work with the PC. LaCie's customer service was less than helpful.
I have another one of these drives that I use with just my Mac, and it is great. But if you need to switch between operating systems, I would try something else...

    1TB has troubles with iMac

    • Written by from San Francisco

I bought the 1TB version to go with my new 27" iMac.
All kinds of weird crashes & glitches ensued.
I've been using the 500GB version without any trouble.
I think its too late to return it so I'm stuck with a lemon i guess.

    Great, Reliable Product

    • Written by from clarksville

I purchased this LaCie 1TB Rugged Hard Drive in late May 2012. I am currently in Afghanistan, which requires me to have a durable hard drive. My Passport lasted a month at the location I am in.

This product has been 100% reliable since I've been in country (June 12 - Present). I use it via firewire, file transfer times are fast, I have yet to have a corrupt file.

I also use the Private-Public which password protects a portion of your HD in order to protect your more sensitive files. I was used to setting a password for my entire HD which I would prefer, LaCie only allows you to allot a certain amount of space for private storage. According to forums there are ways to increase how much space is allotted, but they aren't very user friendly for basic computer users. A good thing about Private-Public is that it doesn't show your private partition when you open the HD. You need to dig a little to get to the point where you enter your password. It definitely protects your information significantly better than other HD's I've used.

Although very expensive, I feel that you get what you pay for with this product.

    Great gear

I spend a lot of time in the field under less than ideal conditions. Sometimes there's no mains power and sometimes things get dropped. Thanks to the drive's Eco feature, my laptop's battery lasts longer. Thanks to the drive's MIL-STD-810F, I don't have to worry much about everyday shocks and bumps. The speeds are great. Bottom line: I can concentrate on my work.

I got one of these for working on the go. I wanted something to store my travel photos and backups. It's nice and rugged, and it survived a good couple of month on the road! I still use it for backups and storage.

I'd recommend this drive to anyone who travels frequently. It's well built and seems pretty secure to me. The data can be encrypted. I use it for storing my work stuff and for backups, it works perfectly and is fast, too. I also use the optional cloud storage that came with the drive for file sharing and extra backup, it's very convenient.

    Quality Product

As someone with more than a small reputation for being clumsy, this drive is a good fit with me. The 1TB is just the right size for my needs and the transfer speeds of the USB 3.0 are very good. What really completes the package though is knowing that the drive can take whatever I throw at it and my data will still be safe and secure.

    Reliable, fast, hardy

I have three of these and am buying another for a friend. I've used a 500GB drive for my daily backup for a couple of years, carried it in my bag (which doesn't get thrown around too hard but is handled casually), and synchronized files a couple of times a week to a second computer. File transfers are fast and error-free. Finally after a couple of years the Firewire 800 plug is balky, but the Firewire 400 still works fine. The disk hasn't failed. I use one for Time Machine and one as video storage. Now my friend will have one too.

    Nice rugged design, great speed

I do a lot of video editing work both at home and in the studio. I just wanted a compact, sturdy drive to transfer video projects from my workstation to my new iMac, but I found that this drive was fast enough to use as a production drive. So now I simply keep my video projects on this drive, connected via USB 3.0, and use it for all my video work.

    Great Product With One Issue

    • Written by from Sutton Coldfield

Recently purchased this hard drive and was great for about first month of use, about a week ago the cable started becoming really loose and would constantly fall out during file transfers. I am now trying to establish wether it is my cable or the actual drive that is the problem and how I can rectify it. The overall product is outstanding though and transfers data at lightning speeds.

    Quick secure drive

    • Written by from Waterdown

I previously purchased the Thunderbolt version of this Lacie rugged hard drive and was unpleasantly surprised at how slow the transfer was from the drive to my MBP especially for the money I paid for it. It was nowhere close to the proposed transfer rate. I quickly returned it and bought this Firewire version and it was cheaper and very fast compared to USB 2.0 - this is a great external drive...rugged and fast and well worth the money. You won't be disappointed.

    Rugged piece of @$!#@

    • Written by from baltimore

Several months after use, I finally dropped this drive. I bought it precisely for that purpose, accidental drops, since I have kids. Only thing, the drive dropped less than two feet onto a soft carpet, pulling out the cable in the process. This jammed the head onto the platter and completely erased all 995.50GB of data!!! I just backed up everything for the final time and was ready to store the drive. I dealt with customer service , which was insensitive to my problem, as the drive did not perform as advertised. I actually allowed me a one-time permission to open to drive without voiding my warranty. I'm an industrial designer and have saved a drive or two in my day, so I carefully opened the drive, and confirmed that the head had been jammed due to the fall. I successfully released the head and was able to read data until I used disk utility, which erased the data. So, soft was that fall, so easily all my data was lost. THIS DRIVE IS STRONG AS EGGSHELLS, don't let the pretty color and rubber boot fool you.Its poorly made of plastic and thin aluminum. Its a SAMSUNG drive and the interior warns the consumer "Do not drop"! False advertising I'd say, and a weak warranty.I'd like my money back thank you. Learn from this... Data recovery can reach the thousands, so back up your data by other means!
