I bought it from Apple store Birmingham (Bullring). The sound quality is perfect. Setting up is very easy with the developed software (which has been updated recently). I read some of the low rated reviews, it seems they have problems with airplay, to have a good airplay stream you need a good network connection. Therefore you should have a very good Wi-Fi router for the "airplay stream". I had the same problem at first but then I found out that the "router" given by my broadband service provider is not suitable for airplay stream & bought a new router. Currently I enjoy using it via airplay 3 to 5 hours a day with no problem. The sound quality is absolutely perfect.

I will never buy Bowers and Wilkins again

    • Written by from RINGAROOMA

I purchased a Zeppelin through the Apple Store. It broke down while under warranty and was repaired. The same problem occurred again but this time it was out of warranty though it had not been used very much.. The cost of repair was prohibitive and I refused to get it fixed. I could not be sure that the same problem would not happen a third time. I would never buy this brand again. The sound was good but the electronics very dodgy.

    Constantly drops connection

    • Written by from Winchester

This product used to work well, however it has developed a habit of constantly disconnecting (purple light remains on). Once in this state it refuses to work unless hard reboot and lots of trial and error.

    Don't waste your money.

For the price I am disappointed. It looks pretty and it has snob appeal. And it goes well once it's going. Nice full sound. But (BUT) touch the volume and music pauses for 10-15 seconds while it thinks about things. I have sent it to back to the NZ distributors. They say it works perfectly and that my problem must be ... surprise surprise ... my router (i.e. not them). They said to make sure the wireless security protocol is set to AES not TPIK. So I ring Vodafone technical team. They don't know what I'm talking about. All up not what I expect or demand from a speaker of this price.

Also - the remote is very unresponsive - I can press a button 10 times before the speaker responds.Buyer beware.

Setup is beyond easy. Took 3 minutes. Good speaker.

    • Written by from Dayton

Anyone who criticizes this speaker based on setup needs to put down the bowl and read the directions in the app... or get a decent wifi access point.

Great build quality as you would expect from B&W. My only gripe is the apparent inability to adjust bass & treble for placement and room EQ. The mid bass is muddy and there's a little too much bass at high volume based on the corner placement for spousal aesthetic requirements. I shoved some napkins in the rear bass reflex port to clean up the mid-bass. Sounds better. The big bass sells in the store but does not translate well to the home listening sitch, unless you're 18 and hooked on the EDM drops.

Does the job, though I prefer my Sonos Play 5s for similar money and ability to do room EQ.

Just got my second replacement. First one got locked into not recognizing any networks, nor being able to play through cable. Having owned the new unit for 2 months I can now only play this one through laptops not running Yosemite, and then it only works for between 12-30min before the signal drops unexplainably, if there was a way to upgrade the hardware it might be a good buy but as it stands it's only good for if you want to play it wired in, then it sounds great and works. Don't buy it, even if it sounds great, it won't keep up with software updates, my iphone, my ipad and my airbook can't see it, my old macbook from 2010 can play it fine.

    Should Have Listened

    • Written by from Amherst

I pride myself on making well informed decisions while striving for quality products. In this case, I thought I knew better and chose to ignore the reviewers on the lack of consistent connections.
Let me be clear, when the speaker works, it is amazing. However, many, many times I try and connect via AirPlay and the speaker just isn't there. I have reset the settings so many times, I now leave a pin next to the speaker to help with the reset. After connecting, which at times includes the full reset and connect again, the sound is awesome...actually better than just about anything I have heard for the size and price. But....it has to be connected to hear it...UGH

    To fix the dropouts....

    • Written by from LONDON

A lot of routers will automatically assign a wifi channel to use, and will change the channel depending on the signal strength.

When your router changes the channel, the A5 will drop out.

    To fix:

Go into your router settings (open Safari and type in or whichever IP your router has, into the address bar).

Somewhere in the WIFI settings, there will be an option to select a channel to use. Select channel number. Make sure it does not say 'Auto'.

The A5 operates on the G standard (unfortunately) so you need to look at the 2.4GHz section if you have a dual band router (2.4/5.0GHz).

Save settings and exit. You might need to reboot your router.

    Me, too. Frustrating Beyond Belief

    • Written by from NEW YORK

I am both heartened and discouraged by the other recent comments about losing connection, dropped playback, appearing and then disappearing from the AirPlay menu. It used to work pretty well but recently it started having these ridiculous problems. It's not that old and looks brand new so the thought of pitching it is too painful but it's now so unreliable that it's too frustrating to use. I am considering buying another AirPort Express and seeing if I can get a more reliable connection that way since I have the MM1s plugged into an AirPort Express and they work pretty well. I wonder if a software upgrade from the Bowers & Wilkins folks would fix the problem and whether the recent iOS upgrades are the cause. Seems likely, why would so many of use start having similar problems all at about the same time?

Bottom line: Potential purchasers, I wouldn't rush to buy until these connection problems are solved. If they aren't, look elsewhere.

I wish I had followed the reviews' advice

    • Written by from San Francisco

Audio is great but connection problems are horrific. Would you rather have an audio system with slightly lesser quality that works reliably or an audio system that can start/stop working absolutely anytime? Audio disconnects in middle of songs, sometime device is undiscoverable.

Tried many different setups including giving a static IP to the device, updating firmware, switching to a time machine for wifi, everything has failed.

    Another frustrated user.

Like many here we are unable to get a reliable wireless playback. Was working perfectly, two speakers then started dropping out before stopping altogether. Was hoping for an answer here, only found kindred broken spirits. Such a shame as the speakers sound gorgeous when connected.

    Can't stay connected to wifi

    • Written by from Wellington

Everytime I want to use the speaker I have to reconnect it to the wifi network. It's so bad I have given up using it and B&W customer support just say I am too far from the router. Not true as the same thing happens if I put it right next to the router. Yes I can hardware it to the router but I don't want the speaker next to the router. WIth many others experiencing the same issue I do hope B&W read this forum and do something about this issue to help us all use the products to the design specificationsthey were bought for. Anyone cosindering investing in a quality speaker, avoid the A5!

    B&W makes sweet sounds

    • Written by from Scarborough

I have been eyeing this puppy for a while. Finally picked it up. So easy to set up you'll laugh. The sound is exquisite and I haven't had issues with AirPlay giving out. I queried that and it would seem the router is often the issue. The distance between my computer and the speaker is three rooms and several walls apart, my friends were highly impressed. I also decided to subscribe to iTunes Match as my music library is vast and I am now able to access my entire library from all my apple devices and they all stream beautifully to my A5.

My kids got me the A5 for Christmas 2012 to go with my new Mac and I can't begin to express how disappointed I am with this speaker. When it works the sound is awesome, however, it has never worked for more than 15 minutes without dropping out, EVEN WHEN HARD WIRED!! Took the A5 along with my hard drive to the Apple Store for evaluation--they confirmed there was nothing wrong with my internal speakers, and when they hooked the A5 up to one of their computers they had the same issue with it in the store! After many hours of over the phone trouble shooting with a B&W rep, I sent it in its original packaging back to B&W for diagnosis/replacement ($55 shipping cost). A few weeks later they sent "a new one" back to me (without an original box) with diagnostics on my "old one" that said no issues were found. Within 20 minutes of playing the replacement A5, it started dropping out again. I'm passed the 2 year mark from original purchase date, and one year of replacement date, but given the amount of time, energy and money I've already spent on this speaker in addition to the $599 price tag, I have simply given up. SO FRUSTRATED!!!!!!! They should refund my money....!!!

    Doesn't stay connected

    • Written by from Montreal

Sometimes it works, but most times it doesn't. Sometimes it won't even connect at all. Sometimes it loses connection every few minutes. Sometimes it works for a few hours. If you enjoy disconnecting from your wifi over and over again but you don't care too much for actually hearing sound come out of your speaker, this is the speaker for you.

    Poor product

    • Written by from London

I had similar problems to many of the other people here. Audio drops out frequently when streaming music and film and there is a constant delay in audio vs picture when streaming live TV. Despite several attempts to fix the problems without resorting to wires (the whole point of the product) I was unable to so both the A5 and A7 that I bought are going back to the shop.
