    mStand v.s. HiRise for MacBook

    • Written by from San Antonio

I've been using the mStand for a little over a year now, but when Twelve South came out with their new HiRise for MacBook stand I figured I would give it a try. I'm not going to compare unboxing because functionality it what ultimately matters.

I dock/undock my Early 2011 MacBook Pro roughly 5-10 times a week. What is most important to me is that it is a seamless transition. Have laptop, put on stand, and connect cables. The mStand excels at this with its "feet" to catch the laptop and make perfect positioning an ease with each use. The HiRise however, does not have such a feature and this can become a tedious task to get the same position as you had once before. Placing your $3k MacBook Pro on a stand shouldn't be a guessing game, and you definitely shouldn't be worried that it might fall off given the incorrect position.

Stand placement is another big issue for me and honestly, I didn't realize it was until I got the HiRise. The stand shouldn't move once placed in the proper position on my desk. The mStand doesn't move. The HiRise does, and abhorrently so.

Lastly, elevation is also critical. While the HiRise will get the top of your MacBook Pro screen to roughly 15 1/2", the mStand will give you a full inch more. There is also more downward angle on the body of the Macbook Pro with the mStand. The is bound to be more beneficial to heat dissipation. I have also found it makes it easier to use the keyboard in those instances I forget to turn Bluetooth back on before docking my MacBook Pro.

P.S. With the HiRise height set to the lowest point, the back(where the back of your laptop would sit) is at 3 5/8" and the front is at 2 1/8".

It Does Stick! People are using it wrong!

    • Written by from Langley

Great Product, everyone that says that it does not stick and that the macbook slides off is using the product upside down! The V shape part of the product is where the macbook sits on, and the base that sits on the desk is the rectangular part. Please consult the pictures on the box before using and criticizing.

Personally, I love the product, it may not have the ability to change the tilt, but the height adjustments are great, the product is built strong and sturdy, and I love the design ascetics of the product!

My High Rise stand arrived today, and it is very well made, and looks great.

Sadly though it does not hold either my MacBook Air or MacBook Pro steady or securely enough. Both machines just rest on the support arms, but move about both front to back and side to side when touched, even lightly. This gives the impression that it is going to fall off.

This may not be a problem if you intend to never touch the machine once it is one the stand, but if like me you will have to still use the keys from time to time this may not be the one for you.

Sadly had to return the stand.

If I could give this no stars I would

    • Written by from Privett

Do not buy... well, do buy if you want a stand that your laptop will just slide off.

Can't believe Apple stock this piece of a expensive junk.

The facts it's expensive. It looks like your Apple laptop i.e. it's made of the same looking metal (nice). Down side is that it looks great but performs terribly. You put you laptop on it and with the slightest (and I mean slightest) knock it well send you laptop hurtling to the floor or at least to your desk top. Why? because it has a smooth plastic edge as apposed to a rubber outer ring, it uses cheap plastic that offers no traction at all.

Avoid like the plague... Shame on you Apple for stocking such rubbish.

    Mine's not wobbly...

    • Written by from Washington

My HiRise Stand for MacBook arrived today and I have to say I'm delighted with it. It seems very well built and sturdy and everything appears to be even. My only criticism is that I had assumed that it would be possible to adjust the level of tilt, but it isn't. Apart from that, I'm very pleased.

As to the previous comments posted, I wonder whether one was just a bad example - it would be interesting to know if the buyer's second purchase was the same. As to the other, yes, the packaging oozes class and expense and I'm sure that does add to the price, but since when has that put off an Apple purchaser? Unpackaging an Apple product is one of those little joys that makes Apple what it is. I'm delighted that Twelve South thought enough about their customers that they would try to emulate that experience also. Good for them.

Finally on the price, yes it is a bit costly, but I was prepared to pay the extra in order to have the adjustable stand. As it turns out, I have already adjusted the stand once because I decided I didn't actually need it quite the way up to the top.

    Just what I wanted

    • Written by from LONDON

Saw the stand on display in Covent Garden and knew it was exactly what I needed. My main monitor is 30" but I like to keep my chat clients on the Macbook screen out of the way. Putting the Macbook on the desk next to large screen meant I had to keep looking down to see the screen. With this stand I can raise the Macbook up and position in right up against the edge of my monitor closer to being horizontally central. The base of the stand serves as a useful place to leave my iPhone charging hidden away under the Macbook. There is quite a bit of room underneath as the arms don't slant down too much like on other stands. It really makes everything look way neater and I can switch my focus between screens more quickly.

    Excellent build quality & looks

    • Written by from GREENHITHE

I picked up one of these in the Regent Street store for use at work with my Air and I'm pleased with it. The rubber non slip arms hold the laptop in place and the adjustable height is good, although a bit more height adjustment would have been better. If you're very tall, this might be an issue as it's just about okay for me at normal desk height and I'm 5ft 10".

Design wise, it looks great, however, as per usual, it's being obscured by a mass of cables...!

    Works great...no more neck pain!

    • Written by from APO

This stand works exactly as it says it does. I'm not sure what the deal is with a couple of other reviews -- it kind of sounds like they were maybe using the product upside down (?), but it's physically impossible for me to get my MacBook Air to slide, at all, using this stand. It stays put. I don't type on it -- you're not supposed to, according to the product info -- I use it when I come home from the road and want to keep using my MBA with a wireless keyboard and mouse. But my neck isn't bothering me anymore when I spend hours at my MBA, and that's saying a lot. I like that it's adjustable so my husband can fix it to his right height, too (though I'm not so great at sharing my MBA). :>) Totally worth it. Best stand I've seen, happy I bought it!

Do not believe the negatives... seriously

    • Written by from Sheffield

Having read the first few reviews I almost didn't buy this stand. I did in the end because of one review that was positive and seriously questioned the comments about Mac Books sliding off at the slightest touch... really? Well all I can say is my experience is definitely not.

The stand arrived well packed and already assembled in its box. The rubber surface on the arms that provides the, quite frankly, awesome grip to secure your device in place has a protective film over it which needs removing. Then you simply place your valuable piece of kit onto the arms and they will not let go in a month of Sundays.

I even tried some gradually increasing lateral pressure to my MBP to test the stands stickiness and stability and all that happened after enough pressure was applied, was that the the stand (with the my MBP still firmly in place) moved on my desk surface. I should probably mention that my MBP also has a Speck shell case on it which probably provides less traction than the actual base of the Mac Book.

In addition to its excellent gripping ability, the stand is well designed, is of a very high quality and does exactly what Twelve South say it does. I am very pleased with it and would strongly recommend this stand.

Great... if you need the laptop to slide your desk.

    • Written by from FALLS CHURCH

The construction and appearance is good. It has a nice rubber grip on the arms that hold the laptop. Its failing is the base which has no rubber grip, just some black plastic. This means that if you have a smooth surface like you may find on a table or desk, the stand will easily slide around. If you want that feature, this is the perfect stand. I find that it slides enough that you can pull a magsafe cable and drag the stand with laptop off the desk (for example turning you chair). For $70, you shouldn't have to be in search of a rubber mat to set it on.

    No more headaches!

    • Written by from Charlotte

I noticed that I started getting really bad headaches that started at the base of my neck.....and miraculously, they would go away when I stepped away from my desk for an amount of time.

This product completely resolved this issue, and so now...my headaches are only cause by my co-workers! No fixing that unfortunately.

    Buy it!

    Quality Uplift

    • Written by from Uddingston

To some this may seem like a very expensive riser stand. If like me you like to sit at a desk and use a larger monitor this stand is a real bonus. Sure, there are other models out there but Twelve South offer great Apple only peripherals of high build quality and good design. As this is adjustable you can match the screen heights between whatever MacBook you use with your monitor. You can also use is alone with a mouse and keyboard and use you MacBook as the single display adjusted to a height more in keeping with a monitor as opposed to the MacBook lying flat on the surface.
As it is matte silver in appearance is matches MacBooks external appearance well.
If you want a quality product for your already expensive Apple hardware to sit on then this is surely the only one that you need. If you are a bit frugal you may want to stick to a cheaper plastic option that will obviously do the job but not be as high quality as this.

MacBook Pro went crashing to the ground BY ITSELF

    • Written by from Southampton

Never been happy with this stand and should have heeded the previous negative reviews...

Since purchasing I've found that my MacBook Pro seems to gradually slide off to the bottom right without even touching it and so constantly having to slide it back up onto the stand every 30 mins. Perhaps it's just from the vibration of using my external keyboard and mouse but it's quite a design flaw that there aren't supports on the bottom end.

Once, I hadn't seen how far it had moved off the stand (paying more attention to my main monitor) and before I could catch it my MBP went crashing to the ground, thankfully with nothing broken.

It wobbles around like crazy if I try to use the MBP whilst on the stand and doesn't adjust to a very high position at all.

Will be returning as it's very poor value for money and does not do the job.

Really disappointed with Apple here. I have only ever bought great products from them.

This stand looks great, but my macbook pro just keeps sliding off it, so it is useless.

I bought it despite all the negative reviews, simply because I could not believe that original twelvesouth product would not be up to their usual high standards. I am certainly very happy that I've decided to purchase the stand.
My mac air DOES NOT slip from it, DOES NOT wobble (even when I use the keyboard), and you have put considerable amount of force just to move (slide) the stand on the desk. IT IS stable and the stand looks great. Takes minimal amount of space on my desk and the adjustable height is very functional.
Maybe some of the negative reviews were based on fake products that unfortunately are around (even on amazon), the one I've purchased from the apple store is a first class product and if you are like me and tend to work a lot on your laptop with a side screen attached, you will not be disappointed with the stand

    Great stand!

    • Written by from Belleview

I read the reviews and I was skeptical, but the design was what I was looking for. I took a chance and ordered it through Apple and I am very pleased! The stand is sturdy and it grips VERY well. I have had this product for a week and my macbook has yet to move one inch. The height is just what I needed so I don't have to bend my neck. The adjustable stand is extremely easy to adjust to the height I am looking for. Perhaps they have made some adjustments based on previous reviews and I ordered it at the right time.

    beautiful stand must buy

    • Written by from burbank

when I read all bad reviews about it i thought maybe I am not going to buy it. but today i visited and apple store and bought it. let me tell that all the bad reviews that tell you that this stand will drop your computer i think they are using it wrong (up side down) those two arms is where your computer will go not the other way. i think if you read the instruction that came with the stand you will find out how to use it the right way.

    Don't Believe the Negative Reviews

    • Written by from Glasgow

The item comes very well packaged, well in line with the Apple products themselves.
It even supplies an instruction manual the implicitly states after MacBook is placed on the stand "now use an external mouse and keyboard".
    This is a STAND.
It is NOT designed for use of the in-built keyboard / trackpad of the hardware whilst it is in use.

Makes my MacBook look like it is floating, and even allows me to hide external drives / usb hubs now, below the raised MacBook and remain out of site.

I couldn't recommend this enough. It is a quality product, with quality design, which is perfect for the job it was designed to do.
