I was really excited to purchase the Hue system. It promised so much. Indeed it can do many things, as long as you have your phone on you. Otherwise they are very expensive white bulbs. Anytime you switch the lights off at the wall (kids, Grandparents etc etc) then when switched back on, they simply come on bright white. I can't believe there is no way to alter the default setting. Likewise, why can we not have a default scene?

    Good idea, poorly executed.

Furthermore, the GU10 bulbs are so long the probably won't fit in your existing fittings.....

Great hardware but the software team needs to be fired.

    • Written by from Andover

I absolutely love the hardware and I'm up to 15 of these bulbs HOWEVER, the software is truly horrid. Some specifics:

    - It's unbelievable that this is still 1.x software after years in the market, indicates Philips isn't serious about development.
    - Can't group bulbs into sets so if you have a single multi-bulb fixture (such as a chandelier) that you want to behave as a single lamp, you have to create a scene which is tedious and inefficient.
    - Can't always set scenes or recipes which include only Lux bulbs without a color bulb in the group
    - STILL NO DUSK TIMER OR AMBIENT LIGHT FUNCTION!!!! This is despite the discovery that there is a disabled ambient light sensor built into the hub (according to the developer forums on Philips own website)
    - New light recipes can't be created, only allows modification of the four stock recipes.
    - No automatic DST adjustments for timers
    - Glitchy HomeKit integration with Siri

This is stuff that is - or should be - basic functionality and isn't even asking for anything revolutionary such as using the integration with Nest products occupancy sensors to sense user locations and allow lights to follow home occupants. Now THAT would really be something but until the software team gets a real wakeup call on UX then this will continue to be a one star product.

    great bulb poor software

    • Written by from Centerport

bought the starter pack 2 years ago, software essentially useless, should have returned at the time
couldnt set timers or alarms, website and account dysfunctional

finally, tried again, now timers and alarm functionality included but unreliable
also bulbs don't work over wifi extended network using more tan one airport (latest models and software)

typically phillips product; great hardware, sloppy execution

    Feels more affordable!

Once the initial financial hit has been taken on the Starter pack with hub, each successive bulb feels a lot more reasonably priced. Easy to add to the existing lighting scenes.

Great, but a design flaw means these can emit a high pitched whistle.

    • Written by from London

These lamps are great fun and I was very happy with mine to start with. They are bright, create a range of colours well, and 2 or 3 can light a room in the evening. The iPhone app has been improved recently too.

However I've had a problem with 2 bulbs making a very high pitched whistle when turned off in the app. One bulb was loud enough to be heard from the other side of the room, the other was bad if you sat in the chair next to it. The everyhue forums have a bunch of other users reporting this too.

I was told by Philips it was a known issue and I could return the bulbs. This was a pain as it took 6 weeks and multiple calls to get the new ones. Then one of the replacements turned out to be just as bad. So now I have to decide whether I want to be without that for another month, or live with the noise. Not great considering I've spent a good £500 on Hue products.

    Great product! Mediocre Software

    • Written by

    Fast setup
    Easy to set alarms up
Easy light recipe creation from photos
Lots of customization if your iPhone is Jailbroken ( I can tap my home button twice to turn my lights on using HueHueHue and have all of my lights turn on )
5 Hue lights = one light bulb. Lots of light for less $
    Remote Access via LTE/4G

    Expensive startup cost
Hue application is pretty clunky and could be much more user friendly
Lights are not nearly as ranged as they claim to be. Most dark colors do not exist in these lights ( Dark reds, greens, blues are very limited ) and is definitely not as advertised. Hopefully this will be changed with future updates if the lights have the capability?
Dimmer or On/Off switch is mad expensive for what it is

    Pretty disappointing

    • Written by from Peterborough

There is a lot of promise in a product like this but I have been left disappointed. I have a 3 storey house with the bridge on the middle floor and 2 bulbs also on this floor. No problems connecting to these bulbs and the system works as advertised. However, I have put 2 bulbs on the top floor (real distance around 7m direct from the Bridge and 3m directly above one of the other bulbs) and the lights are constantly unreachable - the stated range is 30m but I do appreciate that travelling through a floor will affect the signal. The mesh network created by bulbs is very weak as is the bridge signal. A call to customer support suggested buying a separate starter pack for the top floor. Despite not having the first set working properly, I also don't have a network connection upstairs as is required for the bridge - the support representative responded with "oh...". Support really don't have a clue. For such a high end product I expected a lot more. I would be happy to try and extend the system upstairs but the closed nature of the product seems to make this impossible unless you try to build a big mesh network of more bulbs - not practical in the house I have - I have already placed the bulbs as effectively as I can. A more practical solution would be a mini bridge for use in other locations acting as a wi-fi repeater of sorts. The 5 star reviews on here may be valid for a system set up in 1 room or on one floor where the bulbs are located close to the bridge but if you have anything other than that, don't waste the considerable money that this costs!

    • Written by from 台北市

I just got my starter pack a week ago and now I already added 6 extra bulbs in my house. The control via Philips Hue App worked just fine for me. It's easy for the bridge to recognize all my Hue bulbs and I have no problem selecting between scenes or color whatsoever. It is just wonderful now to come home after a long hard working day and see my living room lit up in my favorite relaxing color. It brushes off all my tiredness immediately and made me feel happy. Glad Hue did not disappoint me!

Mostly Good and Great Wow Factor When Everything Works

    • Written by from SAN DIEGO

As part of our effort to replace every lamp possible in our home with modern LEDs, we got the HUE system for the living room. Immediately added to the starter pack and now have 7 lamps, mostly in recessed cans. When first purchased they worked great with Ambify to turn the room into a disco -- not so much since subsequent updates of IOS or some other app on the phone, not sure what. I have not tried Philips support but I do find the startup app companies building businesses around it (Ambify, Goldee) slow to respond, if at all, to tech support questions posted on their web sites.

I find it relatively easy to add bulbs though sometimes I have to move the bulb to a previously recognized (geographic) location for my bridge to recognize it. We have experienced frequent loss of bridge connectivity, where sometimes we have to turn off all the switches, turn them back on, reboot the bridge, fumble with the order of that, etc. Overall we love it though and the main inconvenience is the lack of a good simple wall controller so we don't always have to use the phone apps. Goldee is supposed to solve that but seems delayed getting to market. We tend to use mostly a few favorite saved and modified scenes (some based on photos of our own), and the default relax and concentrate settings. Dimming is what I've come to expect with LEDs: not very fine-grained, but it does work overall -- when things are working in general.

    Don't waste your money

    • Written by from NEW YORK

These bulbs and the whole Hue system are a complete nightmare == a major Beta test that is not ready for primetime. The Hue app that you need to deal with these is a joke designed by a 10-year-old. The lights take forever to get right, and then they respond poorly to the reason I bought them -- to turn on in the AM and wake me up. In three weeks of tinkering I don't think they've worked as advertised once.

If there were zero stars, I would have selected that

    • Written by from Redlands

Very very very (did I say very) disappointing. I NEVER write product reviews. But this product "takes the cake" requiring me to invest more time than I already have in order to spare my fellow consumers the same frustration that I experienced.

No support. All puffery. Hardware buzzes. I guess they thought the buzzing sound would go better with the lights than my Sonos System. A complete waste of my time. Additional bulbs would not be added to the "bridge". Apparently, I need a masters in Information Technology to get the devices to work properly. Do not waste your time or money.

I would encourage you to read more reviews. The only way I can possibly imagine they are keeping their ratings up is by paying others to create false positive reviews about their product.

    Love it!

Changes the ambience of a room instantly, turn on/off adjust over the net with an app and geofencing. Only negative is that the bridge sometimes needs a restart - hence 4/5.

    A fun toy

    • Written by from Bonney Lake

Got the starter set for Christmas. Didn't know if I'd like it. But I do. It makes the regular lights seem so limited.
I started using two ceiling lights and a bloom in my bedroom to wake me up in the morning (4 AM). I set it on "3 minutes" so the lights would become bright yellow/red over a period of 3 minutes. Kind of like the sun coming up. Seems a lot easier to wake up.
I watch TV with three ceiling bulbs on a low magenta color. Adds just enough ambient light to the room.
I think of Vue lights as a "toy", but a very enjoyable toy. Have them in the den, the bedroom, and the living room. Just ordered two more bulbs!

    Great lamps, unusable software

    • Written by from Basel

The lamps themselves are fantastic, save for the fact that some of them have a bit of an electric "whine" while they are turned off. However, the big issue is the software, which is just abysmal. Setting an alarm for e.g. "turn on 17:00 and turn off 23:00" sometimes works, sometimes not. If you actually turn the lamps on before 17:00, the software then turns them OFF at 17:00 instead of just letting them stay on. Another example of the quality of the software is that daylight savings time is not incorporated at all. You just have to erase all alarms twice a year and then create new ones. I could go on, but I won't. Stay clear until they release completely rewritten software for the lamps, as they are currently just super expensive LED bulbs that sometimes (quite randomly) do cool things.
