    Broken too soon

    • Written by from Woodstock

I bought mine at the same time I bought my MAC, my 1st Apple products. Along with the already mentioned short cable, mine broke today (i.e. will no longer read disks of any kind). Even though it is nearly 2 years old, I have probably only used it about 10 times, so much for Apple quality.....my replacement will be from Amazon not this product.

Was fine until it ate my CD

    • Written by from Longmont

Wondered about all the negative reviews since it was working fine until I accidentally hit the eject button on my keyboard and the CD would not come out - and this is a very valuable CD listing my customer base. Now it's stuck in there and will not come out. Please do not buy this product if you intend to use it with something important!

I can't believe Apple has let us down like this

    • Written by from Polson

This player worked about six times, and then refused to spit out the dvd in it. Its icon disappeared from the desktop, who apparently forgot they had even met. I feel betrayed by Apple for producing such a piece of junk and $79 is a lot to start with when I wasn't even able to use it on my MacBook Pro.

Failed after just a few burns

    • Written by from Astoria

Have had this for least than a year and have only burned less than 10 cd's with this. Up until now it was fine, but the last 3 cdr's I burned were 'finished' in less than 16 seconds. Corrupted and would not play. Had to trash them. Just to check, I burned the same brand of cdr's in my trusty 2011 Macbook Pro and have no problems. This could be because I just updated to Yosemite on the Mac Mini, don't really know but cannot find any help on the web for this.

    Doesn't last

    • Written by from LA

My third one in 27 months just quit working correctly. It immediately spits the DVDs out. Even the ones I had previously burned, however it will still read and burn CDs. These things just don't last. The first two superdrives developed an issue where they would fail on burning any DVD, though it would burn and read CDs just fine. Evidently these things are not meant to last. Probably why they can only be used on certain Macs. I only use DVDs to back up my photos, It's not like I watch movies with it so my use is pretty light. I generally burn 2 or 3 per month. These things look cool but that is about all they have going for them. I will not be buying another one.

Does not work with a USB hub

    • Written by from Newton

Buyer beware. The worst aspect of this drive is that it will not work at all (is not recognized by the computer) if plugged into a powered USB2 or USB3 hub with high power ports (we also have a Thunderbolt hub with USB ports and it does not work in those either).

It only works if plugged directly into the computer USB ports (we have a 2014 Mac mini), but then this permanently takes up one of these precious I/O channels. If Apple is going to eliminate optical drives from all of its computers, then we think it needs to have a viable external alternative. This is not that alternative.

Ideally, the Apple USB superdrive would support USB 3.0 and/or Thunderbolt and could be mounted on a USB3 or Thunderbolt hub. It should also read & write Bluray disks.

    Piece of junk

    • Written by from San Jose

I have been a devoted Apple user since 1984. Much to my great disappointment I must report this CD/DVD drive is a piece of junk. It successfully reads 1 out of 2 music CDs at best. I am now using the built-in drive of my 3 year old MacBook Pro instead, which reads all my music CDs 100%, including all the ones this drive fails to read. Returning this piece of junk to the Apple store.

    USB Superdrive

    • Written by from Sydney

Thought I'd spend more money ($120) & get an official apple external disk drive for my laptop & desktop Mac computers, as they annoyingly no longer come with disk drives. For some reason the disk I put in can not be read now by any computer, meaning that this drive is now pointless & I have to go all the way in to apple to fix this which should never have happened in the first place. Choosing to spend the extra money I just expected a product that actually worked, extremely disappointed.

    Dead upon first use.

    • Written by from Honolulu

Opened up new drive, and it doesn't work. Won't recognize any media once it is inserted, then it gets stuck in the drive and won't come out.
Apple should be embarrassed to sell such a bad product like this.

Apple USB Superdrive is a piece of junk

Apple should stop making this - unreliable and seriously overpriced for what it is. Unrepresentative and damaging to the Apple brand. I regret buying it.

Elegant but very limited usability, particularly for the new MacBook

    • Written by from West Boylston

Be aware that this drive only works with certain Mac models and ONLY if plugged either directly into the Mac or into an Apple connector. It does not work through a USB hub, even a powered hub. This issue is a particular problem for the new MacBook with its single USB-C port. The SuperDrive works fine when connected to the Apple USB-C to USB adaptor. But then you cannot connect any other USB device!! I rip a lot of CDs to my iTunes library, which for space reasons is on an external USB hard drive, so I have to juggle iTunes libraries to do a simple operation.

I guess the problem may be solved when Apple eventually releases the USB-C multi-port adaptor . . . let's see: plug the SuperDrive into the USB port on the multi-port adaptor; plug the USB-C to USB adaptor to the USB-C port on the multi-port adaptor, then plug the USB hard drive into the USB-C to USB adaptor (or maybe through a USB hub, if you want to also connect a mouse!)

Yeah, Apple, that's an elegant solution!! But the drive does look beautiful . . .

    Disappointing and unreliable.

    • Written by from Leeds

Sad to write this review as I love Most Apple products. I bought a USB Superdrive with my iMac less than 2 years ago. The drive is only used infrequently for storing or retrieving photographs. The first one became unusable in less than a year. It wouldn't eject the disc and I lost all the data stored on it. Neither would it register on the iMac so I couldn't force eject the disc either. It was replaced and unbelievably in less than a year the replacement has done exactly the same thing and is unusable. We have quite a number of Apple Products in our house and this one seems to be the white elephant!

Apple's worst and lowest quality device.

    • Written by from Kalamazoo

Just from a pure hardware perspective, this thing is a utter failure. It's pretty and all, but totally unreliable. Spits out pristine CD's and DVD's for no reason, does not always connect or show in finder. Loud, clunky POS. I love Apple but now know why they are dumping physical discs. Bought this to replace my failed drive in my MacBook Pro. I own a ton of Apple hardware. NOTHING has failed except this failure of a product, and my optical drive in my MacBook.

Much as I hate the great Korean copier, Samsung, buy their external optical drive instead. Half the price. It's ugly, clunky, and uses two USB ports, but it works.

I got a MacBook Air and this little SuperDrive before I moved overseas. After 2 months, the stupid thing would not eject. I tried all the suggestions online, but nothing worked. At first, it would still play the DVD that was stuck in there, but now it won't even do that. Seriously Apple??? I'm sure it would be no problem if I took it to an Apple store, but the closest one is a few countries away.

    SO slow

    • Written by from barstow

this would be a zero star if i could.

i have 14 years worth of DVD photo files for archives. i still archive to DVD AND little external hard drives. so when i bought the new macbook pro i also bought a USB super drive to burn DVDs, read old DVDs and enter photo data into a catalogue program. i used toast 10 to burn. i have toast 11 but that just sort of sits there. 10 at least works.

but it is slow. not just a little slow, but so slow that went cataloguing photos it can either take an hour - should take a few minutes or hang up altogether. i used to have an older version of my cataloguing software that worked much faster so i had this work-around.

now with the new laptop and maverick that no longer works.

using good DVDs, highs-peed, best burn speed on the super drive is 4. yes, 4.

is there a better 3rd party drive out there, because this is virtually unusable?

It hates my iMac 5k, or my iMac hates it!

    • Written by from Littleton

I successfully (albiet occasionally) used this burner with my 2014 MBP, and TREID to use it with my 2015 iMac 5k, but it wouldn't work with the iMac. Multiple bad burns, endless error messages, etc. Apple replaced my SuperDrive, but the new one has the same issue(s).

    Not recommended.

    super drive fail

    • Written by from Clayton

By far the worst product i have owned by Apple. The first disk inserted was stuck and none of the online "tricks" have worked. I am extremely disappointed with this product. Now for the hour (each way) trip to return it. I guess I should have done more research instead of trusting apple to release a good product.
