    Quite nice and 'just works'!,

While the build quality of this does seem a bit cheapy, I actually really like this. Like it or not, discs are getting less and less popular as time goes on. But if you need something to get your CDs into your Mac, this works great. I can also burn CDs and DVDs with it too. Yet, it puts away in a drawer when not in use making my desk less cluttered. This is also quite light and portable too so you can even take it with you places to use with your Macbook Air.

I have the 27" 5K Retina late 2015 iMac, which is a really nice thin design. I wouldn't want it thicker just to have an occasionally used disc slot.

    Apple CD Drive

I recently got the MacBook Pro 13 inch with Retina Display, and I love it, but it doesn't have a CD Drive. I bought the one Apple offers and it's perfect. It's super easy to work and it is small and portable. Although, it does not play Blu Ray cd's. I suggest one look into that upon purchasing.

    It certainly isn't the best...

It certainly isn't the best... but it gets the job done. I was really hesitant to buy this at first because of the reviews but I really needed a cd drive because the newest macs don't have them anymore. I love cds. I have been using this for hundreds of cds to download them to my itunes and it still works beautifully. The only reason why i dont give it 5 stars is because the cord is WAY too short and theres no way to change that. Also i have had some issues with 2 cds where it would not eject so i have force eject it (command E) but then it would work.

Apart from the operating speed, perfect.

It performs slower than a built-in Superdrive, but it definitely delivers. It looks great next to my 2015 Macbook Pro 13" and it is by far the best optical drive that will read and write both CD's and DVD's. I expected the integration to be flawless as Apple products tend to be, and I was not disappointed. One question I had about it that no-one seemed to answer was 'Will it work when tilted?'. The answer is yes. I tilted the Superdrive up to 90 degrees in all directions and it still worked perfectly without damaging the disc inside. I recommend it to any Apple product user looking for a optical drive.

Would be perfect if it also read/write Blueray

Great drive, good-looking and reliable. I have used for 2 years now with 3 different Macs and never had any issues. If a Blueray version comes out, I'll happily buy another one.

No Complaints after 2 years of use

Your Mac that does not have a built in SuperDrive is the reason for this unit.

I've had no issues with this. My only problems is that it is not made with uni-body design and there is the issue that you can't use this with a extension (USB) cable.

    Love it, but...

I love the SuperDrive, it does everything you would expect it to, but the thing that i really don't like is that it doesn't play Blu-Ray and that's one thing i really would like it to be able to do...

    Works great

Not sure about all the negative reviews. I bought this recently when I switched to a newer MacBook Pro without a CD drive. I use it primarily for downloading audio CDs but have also used it for burning audio and video. No issues at all with the performance of the drive. Gave it 4 stars as I think it is far to pricey for the functionality.

Nice external drive but upside down cable issue

A nice drive that sits pleasantly on the desk next to my macbook pro. I don't have an issue with the length of the USB cable but I do have an issue with its orientation. It is upside down. I have to twist the cable in order to slot it into the mac book pro. Now maybe if you have an iMac then it sits nicely under the computer and the cable loops over the superdrive (like a scorpions tail) into the back of the machine and so is the correct way up, but with the macbook pro you have to twist the cable uncomfortably to get it in. Is it meant to be this way? It seems ridiculous to take issue with such a thing but it just doesn't feel right.

    awesome product

This product is awesome, with it reading and burning discs very very fast. It has not let me down since i purchased it last year. One problem is the price. It is just too high, as with all apple products. Overall, it is an awesome product. Keep it up apple!

    Awesome!

I have had no problems with this SuperDrive. It works very well when transferring movies to digital. It plays everything but blurays but then that doesn't bother me since I'm transferring to digital anyway. Great product for the price.

Works fine and weighs next to nothing

I don't like to give 5 stars as I don't think any product is perfect, but this works perfectly fine - it does what it should do. It also weighs next to nothing and has a brilliant design.

I bought it just in case I'd need it sometime; I'd recommend it.

    Mine Happily Works Well!

After reading some reviews on this product, seeing how a lot of them had stated that their product didn't work well, they had permanently lost their disk, and return the product back to Apple. I was finally able to get the guts to use mine today, and play a DVD. There were times I was extremely nervous that it will just break down on me. For instance, I wasn't quite sure if it would accept my disk after sliding it in, there were a couple of times the DVD program had froze, but it was for a short time (thankfully). I also left my laptop for awhile, and it fell into sleep mode. During this time I was so afraid that the SuperDrive would just stop working when I came back, but thankfully it still worked. And when I ejected my DVD, it came out without a problem! All I can say is how thankful, and lucky I am to have a wonderful working product. And to whomever gets this product, good luck!

Good but that cable is ridiculous!

It was as always beautifully packaged! Like it or not I have need of an optical drive for my 2014 27" i7 iMac and its design is superb as one would expect. It sits neatly at the base of the iMac. However if you want to hide the cable by putting it up through the cable hold Apple so thoughtfully put in the stand, it cannot reach the nearest of the USB ports!! So you either have the ugly white cable in view dragging on the desk (very un-Apple) of get an extension. So for the sake on 1 inch of cable I have a 2ft extension cable!

In terms of quality and play back it really is very good, I use it mainly to transfer my ancient DVD collection into a digital archive as they occupy so much space. However if you are using it for this and need to make sure quality is maximised, ensure the software you use allows safe mode, de-interlacing and operates a high quality engine. While it plays back perfectly well from disk, it's not so good copying the data. Burn rates are fine but had issues with MP3 CD's we use in our classic car, had to slow the burn time down.

    Great Quality.

I bought the super driver for ripping some old cds and what not. I don't know whats up with all the negitave reviews mine works great. If their was a problem then apple fixed it. Only complaint is that their is no blue ray which should be on a 70-80$$ external drive but not that big of a deal.

Works great as a backup on iMac

I bought this originally for my new MacBook Pro Retina that has no disc drive. It did not work seamlessly with my Macbook; the SuperDrive would have glitches with that computer. However, my 5-year-old iMac 21.5" model disc drive had finally given out after years of use. I have been using this as a substitute for my iMac drive, and it has been working perfectly so far.

    It works

I was hesitant to buy based on the mediocre/negative reviews, but I figured an Apple product would work better than any other, so I bought it. Plugged the device in, sent it a playlist from iTunes and the disc burned in about three minutes, no problems - exactly as it does on all of my Macs with internal optical drives. My only complaint would be that the USB cable is only long enough to have the drive directly under the iMac.

Great product with only one small flaw

It works really well but I think it would benefit a lot from having a detachable USB cable. Other than that, it's great!

    Does what it says

I bought this product when I bought my new Macbook pro, and so far, it does exactly what it says it will. I haven't used it to burn anything yet, or watch any DVDs, but i had to install Microsoft Office for school, and it did that flawlessly, and very fast. It took longer to Import a CD into iTunes, but it didn't take any longer than expected for that either. It would be nice if it did Blu Ray, but thats the way things are sometimes. Other than that, i don't have any complaints yet.
