Works right out of the box!

Plug and play! And, as usual, Apple provides a simple, elegant design with its smaller base.

    Glitchy, frustrating

I regret purchasing this product and not returning it in time. I don't know if it's cheaply made or what, but it has never worked right. It is constantly spitting out CDs and DVDs. I would recommend trying to find an alternative before buying this product.

    Great Drive

i was hesitant to purchase this storage drive based on some of the reviews I read online. But i did go ahead and purchase this about a week ago, and so far I am very pleased with the performance of this drive. I've burned a CD, reviewed some old CDs I had in my files and installed the 2016 Turbo Tax software. Everything worked well. I will caution you that the User Guide provided doesn't provide much information, but the online prompts given by the drive work well. I would definitely purchase this drive again and recommend ito my friends and family.

    SuperDrive has been super

This drive was purchased to compliment a 13" mid-2012 Macbook Air. It has never faltered. I see the bad reviews, and if I had read them before purchasing this item, I may have bought a LiteOn. I have not burned or read a dual-layer disk, but this drive apparently will do that. It does not do LightScribe, which I kind of miss, but my printer will do printable disks, which is even better. So, for me, this drive has worked perfectly well.

Not durable and impossible if a disc gets stuck

We have purchased and feel stuck with this disc drive. Our children have jammed the disc drive 2x and both times the drive broke due to the disc jam. This is something that happens all the time with littles and its amazing how Apple has not problem solved this major flaw. There is no way to forcibly eject a disc, and if the Geniuses end up opening it up to get the discs out, the drive is toast. It only comes with a 12 month warranty so after 1 year your $80 drive is trash.

    Rubbish - avoid

Bought because I would have expected Apple quality to be better than this and worth a premium. Unfortunately it reads no better than 1 in 2 discs and takes an age to import. It's useless. Have persisted over last few months as I need it on relatively few occasions but am now going to junk it. No use if every time it's 50/50 whether it will work or not. Going with an alternative off amazon.

    Useless

I cannot even give one star for this useless, worthless piece of junk. The few of you that gave a five star rating, consider yourselves the "ones in a million" and rest assured, your day is coming when this drive will suddenly be dead. I bought one 3 years ago to accompany my 11" MacBook Air and was able to load one software program successfully. Then it sat in its box until last summer when I wanted to use it again. It would not even take in the CD. It just does not grab it; refuses it and spits it right back out. So, Apple Store took it in exchange for a new one. Yesterday I opened the brand new one out of the box, out of all the plastic wrappings, and attempted to load some new software. Again, this brand new one, just like the first one, will not hold in a CD. So, a family member in the household also has this drive to accompany his iMac. Said he successfully watched some videos on it. So, I borrowed it and same some song, 3rd verse, it will NOT hold in the CD.

Funny thing is, when I took the first one back to Apple, the person assisting me took it to the back to one of the Genius techs, to check it. She came back and said he just said give me another one, he was afraid if he got a disk in it, he might not get it to eject back out. I find this accessory device a total failure on Apple's part, and shocking that a company such as Apple that makes such reliable computers, can make such a piece of junk. It says on device, "Designed in California Assembled in China." Go figure... Now I have to return to the Apple Store AGAIN with the same problem. WAKE UP APPLE!!!

    Awful!

I just bought this item a couple of days ago because I was in need of uploading pictures to my macbook air. While trying to upload, this product would not work whatsoever. I'm highly disappointed because I just wasted $80 on something I needed.

Disappointed that Apple would sell this unreliable product!

This product is totally useless. worked at first then died with a new dvd in it. The most ridiculous thing is that they wanted me to bring in my Macbook Pro and the USB drive and leave them in the store for a few days so they could try to eject the dvd.

I own an I Pad, I Phone and the MacBook Pro which are superior products.

WHAT HAPPENED? Why sell this inferior product?

Reads and writes CD and DVD

I used the USB Superdrive on my MacBook Pro 2014 and on my MacBook Pro 2016 using a USB C to A converter. It works fine. If you want to read CD's or DVD that were written to by other computers or you want to burn either CD or DVD's, this device will do it. You have to be patient because it doesn't read or write quickly. On the other hand, it is very reliable and hardy. I had another one that I used for many years but misplaced it and therefore had to buy this one to replace it. You can play commercial CD's and DVD's but be careful because some CD or DVD from a different regions of the world will not play on your computer and, although you can shift regions, you can only do it a few times. I have used it to read my music CD's into iTunes and played movies from DVD.

    Apple USB SuperDrive

This device works great for a while, but for some unknown reason be it my computer or the software being used, this device works great with DVD Player when playing movies but does not work when importing CDs with iTunes. So overall I say a solid 3.5 stars.

Not recognized by MacBook Pro anymore

I don't use this very often. Tried to use it today. MacBook Pro (only 3yrs old) won't even recognize it anymore. Received this as a gift when I got the MacBook Pro since the disc reader/writer is no longer integrated into the laptop. Can't believe this!

    Nothing 'super' about it...

I bought the superdrive as an essential piece of kit to accompany my Macbook pro (2015 model) as it did not have a built-in drive. The main reason I decided to pay the premium, the best part of £80, was the fact it was an Apple product - a brand I was familiar with and so far had not let me down. Unfortunately this drive is very temperamental, sometimes I have to load a CD into the drive multiple times before it works at all. Sometimes it takes 2 hours to import a single CD and even this is not done correctly as only 30 seconds of the CD gets imported.

Apple has moved away from built-in drives and my Macbook pro is amazing. However as apple moves away from USB slots ect., and we have to buy these add ons I expect them to at least work. My confidence in the brand and the products has been severely knocked and its hard to to feel cheated out of so much money.

I was lured in by the brand and the attractive design but thats all this have to offer, my advice would be to buy a cheaper drive that actually works and spend the rest of the money saved on more CD's!

    Must do better !

The drive works well but there are a number of shortcomings :
1- Slot loading means you can't use a minidisc.
2- No reading of Blu-ray Discs, let alone writing them !

I think it's about time somebody (preferably Apple) made an external, matching, tray-loading Blu-ray player/writer WITH A THUNDERBOLD CONNECTION !

    Design Issue

I bought mine today... worked first time, but I was immediately 'struck' by the inbuilt USB cable?... I've had Apple products for a while, and one thing they have a VERY BAD reputation for, is their atrocious cable$... So having a 'fixed' USB cable at the back, doesn't fill me with confidence for the future.. I fear it will be the first thing to go... and once it does?.... No more super drive?....

Completely flabbergasted by such a design floor....

And of course, no indication of that on the box! It wasn't like I could have found this fact out 'easily' before the purchase?... Instead of being able to 'chuck' this thing in my bag, I will now need to be constantly thinking, "once that USB cable goes, that's it!! You're screwed"..... "that will be another 129 bucks please!!".... AUD $.... "please come again...".

Died silently while not being used ... RIP

Bought this back in 2013. Now just connected it to my iMac because I needed it again after a long time and ... It stopped working. It died silently while resting in it's box for 2 years . Perhaps it was designed like this to make us buy a new one ???
